Career Plans and Objectives During my undergraduate internship at the Madison County Public Defender’s Office I became interested in social work. This internship lead to a full time position as an Administrative Assistant. While I was spending my days completing general legal office work, I began inquiring about efforts to prevent recidivism. It was evident that individuals and families the office served would benefit from engagement and structures to address life challenges and enhance their well-being. I became the office’s Client Advocate providing empowerment and promoting social change to clients in the mental health and drug court systems. Fast forward nearly ten years and I am still committed to promoting social change, development, cohesion, and empowerment. My goal for graduate study is to learn and apply critical thinking and human behavior principals. In …show more content…
Also, my supervisor means that I have the ability to enter into “homes” that have been identified as not meant for human habitation and engage families to develop trusting relationships. My education is a weakness. My major was criminal justice and while these courses did provide me with insight on social problems, I am weak in human behavior principles. Even though, I have had job duties that included practicing engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluations, I regret not knowing the theories and research behind the principals. Being accepted into the Master of Social Work program at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville will ensure that I will be able to further promote a just society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity. All people deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and provided with equal access to
Prior to being in graduate school I was not fully aware of all the opportunities and experiences in social work. I have since gained more knowledge of macro level opportunities in the field of social work, such as advocating for human rights, and social justice. I have also been presented with the chance to tackle tough policies that directly impacts clients that I have interacted with through my experience in social work. I plan to continue to identify weakness in various systems to promote social justice, and learn more ways to change social institutions to be more humane and
By coupling the skills I have acquired from my academic and professional career, I believe that I have what it takes to make an impact in the community. I can offer a dynamic set of skills and resources. With my extensive knowledge of community resources and my experience working with families affected by homelessness, domestic violence, and poverty, I believe I can be an asset to my field placement; whether that is providing support, or setting up a plan, I can offer commitment, flexibility and enthusiasm for learning. I have the confidence to work independently, while also enjoying working on group projects. My experiences as a domestic violence advocate and housing coordinator have particularly strengthened my understanding of social work dynamics as well as developing my analytical and critical thinking skills.
I write in response to your ad seeking receptionist and administrative assistant. Running as an assistant, customer service, and handling administrative duties in my previous experiences has prepared me to embark upon a broad array of barriers that may arise in a fast-paced environment. I will bring professionalism and reliability to this position.
Social work is more than a profession; it is a passion. To improve social justice, advance human rights, and advocate for causes and individuals, I dropped my criminal justice major to work towards a degree in social work. While in high school, I stood up for the rights of the unborn, because the value I base my practice on holding the value of human life in high regards. No matter a human beings age, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or other identifying characteristics should he/she/they be susceptible to lesser rights than their counterparts. Further, the wide range of experiences offered and obtained in the Bachelor of Social Work program at Grand Valley State University have adequately prepared me to enter the profession with immense knowledge on human development and the social environment while possessing the curiosity to further my comprehension
Based on conversations with a number of physicians, I decided that it would be best for me to gain more experience working directly with patients prior to beginning medical school. Therefore, I obtained my EMT certification and began working and volunteering in a number of different cities. Each shift, I respond to a number of calls ranging from transporting patients and providing emergency care to the sick and injured. I identify and treat the patients concerns and relay important patient information to physicians and nurses. I am developing clinical intuition, learning the necessity of teamwork in medical settings, and am gaining experience being the primary care provider. As each paramedic, nurse, and doctor has their own style and
This has provided me with an added insight into what interventions may be beneficial when working with clients. My aptitude for ¨thinking outside the box¨ has facilitated effective problem solving in situations that had no single or clear-cut solution. I hope to enhance this attribute during my time in field placement by refining my critical thinking skills and increasing my knowledge of community resources, so that I can gain a strengthened awareness of how to best advocate for and support clients. My ability to integrate personal goals, values, culture and socioeconomic background into treatment planning and in the treatment process has allowed me to develop realistic and attainable goals that are relevant to each individual. This strength stems from the steadfast belief that cultural relevance is essential to provide effective services. My social work experience has refined my organization and planning skills and I have fine-tuned my ability to manage a chaotic schedule. When I have encountered challenges in the field, I have overcome them by seeking supervision and consulting with more experienced colleagues. I also dedicate extra time to learning about cultures, concepts, and practices that I may have a difficult time understanding or am not familiar with. A final strength I believe will be an asset when working as a professional social worker is my dedication to the social work mission and
My passion for teaching others has led me to ask many questions to my professors and tutors throughout my journey. I know that I will continue asking questions because we will always learn something new every day. That is why even though I have an undeniable passion for language, I would love to have the opportunity to learn what public health really is and how it benefits us as individuals. I currently work in a surgical center called Shammas Eye Medical Center as a medical assistant. I have learned through the various physicians and surgeons the importance of educating patients on prevention and management. Dr. John Shammas, head Surgeon of our facilities and a professor at the University of Southern California has taught its staff the value
I am interested in becoming a master-level social worker to gain the skills necessary to become a well-rounded advocate for change. Likewise, I am interested in having the opportunity to work with faculty who are conducting research and making an impact in the Charlotte community. As a social worker, I plan on working towards eliminating the school-to-prison pipeline, which directs youth into the juvenile and criminal justice system without taking into consideration how social problems, such a poverty, abuse, and drugs, directly affects their behavior. In addition, I would like to tackle the issues surrounding adolescent sexuality, including teenage pregnancy, STI transmission, and sex education in schools. My target population are vulnerable youth within urban cities. Since The University of North Carolina Charlotte is located in one of the largest and most diverse cities in the nation, I have decided to seek admission into the MSW program. Having the opportunity to utilize the skills I will be learning in the classroom while working hands on with my target population is of utmost importance to me. Upon graduating with my MSW, I plan on continuing my work in the Charlotte community and working as a full-time school social worker. UNC Charlotte’s MSW programs puts emphasis on serving vulnerable populations, which is congruent with the type of people I would like to work with.
Humans have the most neurons and possibly the largest information processing capacity than any other species, which makes us far superior to any

There are so many career path options. What is good for one, is not always good for all. I have been contemplating many different options and I have finally chosen one. The career path I have chosen is to take the summer off and work at home doing day care. Then return to Argosy University in September, to start my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a concentration on child adolescents. During which, I will volunteer with a local organization called the Family Promise of Green County. Finally I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree in 2018 and get a job in Green County Human Services as a social worker. I have chosen this path because it suits my educational needs and balances my family and work needs. My only concern is not having the face to face communication, which I believe is important in the preparation of a psychology degree. However, by taking a volunteer position with the Family Promise Organization of Green County, I hope to get this experience. This paper will identify my skills and experiences needed for this path along with the skills and experiences I already have. Additionally, I will identify my strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, I will create a plan for meeting these goals and gaining these skills and experiences.
After I graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara I was unsure what my next step would be. Of course I was anxious since I did not have experience working nor did I excel in my undergrad studies however, I knew I needed to use my newly earned degree in a positive way. Fast forward, after working for two years, I have gained the skills, knowledge and values from my work experiences that have confirmed my desire to advance my education in the social work field. I currently have my own case load of clients as a case manager at a level 12 group home but it’s time to take the next step forward. I want to ultimately advance social justice and provide services to assist individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
The key experience that I identified in this journal provided me with time to reflect on just exactly why I applied to graduate school. I have spent the last two years working to complete classes and receive good grades. This key experience reminded me that I am doing more that just taking classes. I am working with individuals as a professional, as a social worker. I had to slow down and identify what does that mean to me. I have chosen the career path to help people and address the social problems that they might encounter. I am going to respect the dignity and work of the persons I encounter. Being supportive of this means that I will work to help the clients identify their capacity and opportunities available to them to change as
This perspective to life led me into enrolling for social work in the past, which I could not continue, due to some unforeseeable circumstances beyond my control. In order to quench my thirst for seeking ways to add value to people’s life in the demographic I currently work with, my research revealed that the human services program Athabasca University could open me a door leading to those opportunities I long for.
