Personal Statement Aurora L. Romo Throughout my life, there have been many events that led to my decision about choosing the Social Work field as my career. As a child of Mexican immigrant parents, I have learned of hard work as a priority and diligence a core value. I was the first in my family to attain a high school diploma, bachelor’s degree, and hopefully a master’s degree in Social Work. This dream of enriching my education became a goal whenever my role in assisting the underrepresented students in my community needed a broader scope of social worker skills. Skills such as negotiation, partnership, professional competence, networking, and accountability have become daily work skills that could be enhanced with a higher education. With a combination of higher education skills and my perseverance I will attain my goal on becoming a positive role model for my community and motivating minorities to engage in higher education. My understanding of social work is more than just an occupation, rather it is a lifestyle to serve others by helping people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. According to the Council of Social Work Education, indicates that “the purpose of the social work profession is to promote human and community well-being.
