I’ve stayed home innumerable nights this year working hard from the bus stop to the time I go to bed because I strive to go the extra mile. I have twelve years of school ahead of me, and I am not afraid of the hurdles it will bring because I know how to work hard for the long haul. I will apply this strength in the university as well. With the same skill, I’ve pushed through the adversities in altruism, the primal reason as to why I deserve this scholarship. As an altruist, I have put hundreds of hours of community service into the City of Howell, impacting the lives of children and adults each day. As an award-winning Vice President of a volunteer board for teenagers, we plan and carry out events to get students off the streets and into our welcoming teen center in downtown Howell. At times, our teen center faced closure and disapproval from government officials, but I pulled my board’s representatives over each hurdle and into our new building. Contributing to my school and community is a true passion. I am involved in programs like the Red Cross, Angel Tree created by The Salvation Army, and Olive Garden’s Pasta For Pennies. My school hosted a Red Cross blood drive, and I was responsible for promoting the event to individuals within our school. We had a total of two hundred students donate blood. We helped save a total of six hundred lives! I also assisted the Program Angel Tree by promoting the program among the student organizations within my school. Our involvement has helped hundreds of less fortunate children and seniors receive necessities and gifts! As a team, the student council also collects spare change from students in our school. Our collaboration with Olive Garden has helped fund the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's School & Youth campaign. The past two summers I was fortunate enough to go on two mission trips with my church. Our group teamed together with other churches and we worked with the Carolina Missions Team or known as “CMT”. This past summer was defiantly an eye-opening experience for me being able to work with an underprivileged community. One of the things I learned and realized during this trip is that even though these people have very little of anything, they are still so willing to give other people they don’t know so much love and compassion. Having this opportunity to volunteer has made me more aware of the needs, not just for the people in our own country, but also those in other countries who have much worse circumstances. The experience has led me to want to reach out to those other countries. Hopefully one day being able to travel and give them the help, knowledge, information and hope they need to prosper.

Surrendering my free time to serve others, is often times not something I crave to do. Selfish ambitions take over, and consequently, I participate in activities I find pleasing to me rather than others. However, when I take the time to assist others and take action in my community, I have found that it is a rewarding experience. Volunteering has never led me to anything negative, and it has allowed me to be a part of a positive and uplifting experience. My desire to volunteer may consume my time, but the countless rewards I receive from volunteering are priceless. Offering my time to organizations has allowed me to become more humble, see the happiness it brings to people, and improve my social skills.

The great Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” I deem this to be a vital question that everyone should ask themselves. I wholeheartedly agree that serving others impacts your community in a positive light. Therefore, I've made it my duty to volunteer with students throughout my community. This is because I’m very proactive about seeking change in the area I grew up in.

After becoming a member of the National Society for Leadership and Success, I participated in countless hours of volunteer work for my community. One particular event that I always attend is the Raid for Kids. This event is a community Halloween event that provides children with a safer alternative to trick or treating. The event occurs on the University campus during day light hours and is supervised by volunteers and organizers. Later on I joined Habitat for Humanity in Albany, Georgia. Last year we participated in neighborhood clean-up projects. Recently Albany, Georgia had a destructive tornado that wrecked havoc on the city. There was is no interview process. However, there was a 22-page application. I was told to complete the application and return it with a copy of my driver’s license, two non-family references. Skills I have that can be utilized in this position are my able to relate to children, my keen desire to work children, my willing to learn, my enthusiasm, tact, patience and a sense of humor. Skills I wish you to use more are my problem-solving skills, my literacy and numeracy skills.

To understand the importance of volunteering, I volunteered at one cultural event in San Antonio downtown. It was the festival of Diwali, a festival of light celebrate in India every year, organized by the San Antonio municipal and Indian Association. In San Antonio’s downtown we have a Riverwalk and the booth was on one side of river with the bleacher and on the other side was the stadium. Folk dances of India were performed on the stage. I volunteered at a booth of drink. My job was to sell soft drinks like coke for a dollar. I made a working there on the booth and we both had almost same interests due to that I was very surprised. There was also another booth next to us. I helped them to load, carry and organize their booth with food. This

I am a good candidate for the job as I am very responsible. I have volunteered at RAL since January of 2015. While it is fun it is also a large commitment. RAL expects me to show up on time and ready to work; which I always am. At RAL I help take care of the dogs. I give the dogs baths, help give the dogs medicine, and clean the kennels.

Service learning has given me the new opportunity experience helping others and including myself. I enjoy volunteer work because It’s a way of giving back to the community, but also I’ve become confident in public speaking. It was a great pleasure for me to contribute to the organization to the development of the community through Political Science class volunteering work.
