Abstract
The Personal Strengths Program (PSP) is a program that assists students with learning disabilities such as, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and learning disabilities (LD). The study uses a baseline design. According to Cameto, Knokey and Sanford those who go on to attend college with these learning disabilities has increased. The study follows seven college students with such learning disabilities. It investigates self-determination of college students who have ADHD and/or LD. These students are compared to their peers who don’t have learning disabilities. Those who have characteristic of a self-knowledge and awareness of their condition can show strong will of seeking appropriate help so they are successful

The students had to be currently taking college courses. Out of the seven students, five were undergraduates and the other two were gradates. The study was made to be completed within one semester, instead of dragging it out into other semesters. The students were set to work on strategies that they were taught within their PSP sessions to help them reach their weekly goal. For the time series data the students were asked three questions, and to rate them. One being none or never, ten being complete. “1. In the past 24 hours, what level of control do you feel over your life outside school to do what you want? 2. In the past 24 hours, what level of control do you feel over your life inside school to do what you want? 3. In the past 24 hours, how often do you feel you thought about your behaviors and actions in relation to what happens in your life?” (p. 7) According to Wehmeyer and Field, the questions were to explore characteristics of self-determination.
The Self-Determination Student Scale (SDSS) was given during the time series data questions. The SDSS was given before the study, after three sessions and after PSP was completed. After the PSP was completed, all students were interviewed to see if the study was a valid

I recently took the StrengthsFinder assessment for a class, which after a series of questions determined that my three greatest strengths are that I’m deliberative, disciplined, and an achiever. I felt that these strengths were accurate at describing me well. I have always been very deliberative when making decisions, as I like to evaluate all of the options and evidence, before I make a decision and I very rarely do things on a whim. One particular example of a decision I made after a lot of deliberation was when I was deciding which college to attend roughly four years ago. After researching and visiting all of the schools I had been accepted to, I made a chart in which I ranked all of the schools in a wide variety of characteristics that
At the point when a person’s mental wellbeing is tested, holding on to hope and self-conviction can be exceptionally troublesome. Self-determination is important in the transition planning because it offers students confidence and encourages the students to take control of their Individual Education Plan (IEP) and transition post-high school. Making a student’s IEP more interactive helps students understand their IEP better and allows students to properly express personal wants and goals for their future.
When it comes to counseling, whether Christian or secular, it is important that the therapist is client focused. Client-centered therapy was developed in the 1930s by the American psychologist Carl Rogers. (Gale, 2001) Rogers’s form of therapy steered away from the detached role the therapist played that was “common to psychoanalysis and other forms of treatment.” (Gale, 2001) Instead, Rogers viewed those seeking counseling as clients rather than patients, in order to “show them as equals.” (Gale, 2001) As Christian counselors, it is our job to provide the best care for our clients so they can go on to live happy and healthy lives. Not only are we there to help them with the problems they are facing, but to provide soul care with Christ as

According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004, students with disabilities often have lower academic success than their peers without disabilities. Researchers believe that being able to regulate cognition, motivation and behaviors in learning are key factors to success, and students with disabilities often struggle in these areas (Wagner, M., Newman, L., Cameto, R., & Levine, P., 2005). Although there is little research focusing on self-regulation of students with disabilities, models and strategies have been developed to support all students in successful learning (Zimmerman, Bandura, & Martinez-Pons, 1992).

Students with learning disabilities have even more motivational difficulties than their peers, due to the negative consequences they experience from underachieving (Hojati & Abbasi, 2013). In order to build the motivation and self-efficacy of struggling learners, these individuals need to set short-term goals that are specific and achievable (Margolis & McCabe, 2004). In this study, the effects of short-term goal setting among the motivation, self-efficacy, academics, and behaviors of special education middle school students were measured. The findings, limitations, suggestions for future research, and implications of this study will be discussed in the subsequent paragraphs.
