Personality is defined as “individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. The study of personality focuses on two broad areas: One is the understanding of individual differences in particular personality characteristics, such as sociability or irritability. (American Psychological Association (APA, 2011). Raymond Cattell who is well-known for his work in the fields of statistics and psychology. He had great interest for human personality and behavior who didn’t agreed with Eysenck’s point of view that personality could be understood by looking at two or three dimensions. The 16 PF was designed to measure and interpret different facets of a person’s personality traits. Trait theorist Raymond Cattell reduced the number of main personality traits from Allport’s initial list of over 4,000 down to 171, mostly by eliminating uncommon traits and combining common characteristics. Using the method of “factor analysis”, Cattell recognized the paramount personality traits. Cattell first collected “L-data” (Life Data) that gathered over person’s life, school, work, community etc. Then he collected Q-data (question data) from a multiple choice questionnaire called Self-rating questionnaires. After that based on results from the L-Data and Q-Data, Cattell developed T-data: (experimental/test data), which involves reactions to systemized experimental situations created in a laboratory settings where a participant’s behavior can be objectively observed and measured. The 16 PF was originally published in 1949. Since then there have been four revisions to the test. The main changes that were made to improving individual scales but the 1993 revision also included psychometric changes, attention to cross-cultural differences and advanced within the profession. Cattell 's objective in making the 16PF Questionnaire was to find the number and nature of the major qualities of human identity.
