Personality Survey Rachel Reda Keiser University Personality Survey According to Dennis Coon and John O. Mitterer (2016), “psychologists use a large number of concepts and theories to explain personality” (p. 384). Traits are qualities that a person consistently exhibits to make up who they are. I took the personality survey on myself. Then I used four raters to compare how I view myself versus how others view my personality. METHODOLOGY To begin my personality survey, I first asked my parents, who live out of state. I sent the list through Facebook messenger and they each replied with the 20 traits they selected. My next participant was a good friend who is also out of state. She sent me her response via email. My fourth …show more content…
393, 1961) found that an average of seven traits provides a good description of a person. My central traits include considerate, generous, sociable, kind, respectful, and punctual. These traits are the foundation of who I am as a person. Raymond B. Cattell (Coon & Mitterer, 2016, p. 393, 1973) measured visible features of personality and called them surface traits. One of my surface traits would be neat. I keep my house neat and tidy, and I also keep my appearance neat, clean, and put-together. Cattell realized that surface traits were often grouped together, called source traits. Some of my surface traits that could be grouped together are considerate, orderly, neat, and punctual. My source trait would be respectful. I am respectful of time (punctuality), people (considerate), and things (neat & …show more content…
I feel that my results depended on who was taking the survey. Adding other techniques of personality assessments, such as interviews, direct observation, or situational testing, would help to get more accurate results. Certain people in our lives will see us in different ways. My parents knew I was a little rebellious when I was a teenager, but my adult friend and husband wouldn’t agree with that at all. My husband knows how I can be impatient sometimes or pessimistic, but a friend or co-worker might not ever know that about me. According to Barbara Engler (2014), “psychologists regard personality as a person’s unique long-term pattern of thinking, emotions, and behavior” (Coon & Mitterer, 2016, p. 384, Engler 2014). With this type of survey, I think that the traits with the most checkmarks are the traits the person has more consistently than the traits with just one or two
Over the last 100 years, the underpinning concepts in the fields of psychology and counseling were wrought. Within this period, these concepts have transformed and evolved from somewhat crude conceptions of the psyche toward more holistic interventions and approaches. As the profession continues to move forward, adaptations of the original theorists regarding the nature of man and the development of personality continue to emerge. These adaptations, along with the integration of new concepts and ideas, continue to contribute to the field. The author describes his view of man and human nature, personality development, and explores potential implications for counseling.
The tests related with personality intrigue people because human personality is a very curious topic for people. Everyone wants to know about their personality and the internet has become the easiest method to access any personality test that claims to solve your queries about your own. People take interest into these tests and end up being fooled by some vague claims made by a machine that has all remarks and conclusions fitted in it. I was no exception to it when I decided to take a personality test and get included in the list of those people who got duped by such tests.

PLEASE REMEMBER – when taking personality tests, or any psychological tests, you typically need to respond based on your PREFERRED way of being, not necessarily how situations in the past have required / compelled you to be.
I found the test results of the Big Five personality assessment to be an interesting and very accurate description of myself. After completing this assessment, I was able to analyze my personality in depth. I found this information to be helpful knowledge and provide insight about myself, as well as being crucial in examining my personality traits. The big five is also referred to the OCEAN model of personality, and stands for the main traits used to describe personalities. This acronym stands for openness to experience/intellect, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. After taking the test I was then given percentile scores that allowed me to compare myself with other people who have taken the test online as well, therefore making it a more meaningful comparison.
Who are you? Many fortune cookies, horoscopes, and other whimsical devices attempt to tell us our personalities, or our combination of traits and behaviors that make up who we are. However, psychologists today deviate from those unsubstantiated methods and have concocted various personality tests that give us a better understanding of who we are. One such test is called the Myers-Briggs personality test. Based on theories by Carl Jung, but primarily created by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother, Katharine Cook Briggs, the test gives people a standardized survey of questions to answer. Standardized, meaning the test is given and scored in the exact same way every time to give unbiased and accurate results. It scores people in four pairs of characteristics, so there is a total of 16 possible personality types. Each pair of characteristics are opposites and a person can fall anywhere between the extreme end of one opposite to the extreme end of the other. The pairs are extroverted and introverted, sensing and intuition, thinking and feeling, finally judging and perceiving. A person can have strong, moderate or weak tendencies towards a preference. (Rathus, 2010, p. 420) There is some criticism of the Myers-Briggs test however, not everyone fits into the categories. People may answer according to socially acceptable norms instead of their honest answers. Not all of the theories were proven, Carl Jung made many observations and deductions but they weren’t formally
However with advantages come disadvantages. For example, with correlational studies there is no background information obtained. Therefore, the reliability of the correlational studies is questioned.
For the trait questionnaire, I was very surprised at the findings. One trait that surprised me the most was the determination trait. I personally believe that I am a determined individual because if I have an idea, I stand by it 100%. My colleagues and my family however, thought differently and rated me neutrally for the most part. Other than that trait, I can see why the people I asked to rate me did so that way. For the skills questionnaire, I was surprised that I have more technical skills than human skills. The reason why I was surprised is because on a day to day basis, I interact with different
The results I got from my Big Five Project personality are traditional, conscientious, extraverted, agreeable and calm. Comparing to the feedbacks I received, there is some difference between the results I get with the feedbacks. I emailed and called many different people who are playing the various roles in my life. I asked my parents, my friends and my friends in college. I am surprised because what they write in the emails were all the same. The most words they describe me are organized and reliable, and the next are trusting and friendly. The only difference from the report is that my friends think I am an open-mind person but the report says I am a traditional person. Overall, I would agree with their feedback to me.
Personality is defined as “a) the sum total of the physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics of an individual. b) the organized pattern of behavioral characteristics of the individual” (Dictionary.com, 2010). Whether we realize it or not, personality defines us as people. There are many facets to my personality,
Overall, I believe that the test was fairly accurate in measuring certain factors of my personality so much so that it was difficult for me to find certain factors that I did not agree with. However there were two factors, E (dominance) and Q1 (rebelliousness), which I believe were a bit overrated in myself. Aside from these the test seemed to adequately define facets of my personality. For “warmth” (factor A) my sten score read 4, indicating that I am slightly more reserved and critical that easygoing and good-natured. I scored a 7 in “ego strength” (factor C), classifying me as more stable and emotionally mature and less emotional and changeable in attitudes. In dominance (factor E) my sten score read 8, meaning I am more assertive, competitive and stubborn rather than submissive, dependent and humble. I received an average score of 5 in “impulsivity” (factor F) indicating a slightly more serious and sober approach to the world over the cheerful and enthusiastic view. As for “boldness” (factor H), I received a sten score of 4 signifying a more shy and restrained approach to things as opposed to an adventurous genial one. I received a median score of 5 for “emotional sensitivity” (factor I) demonstrating my slightly more tough-minded and self-reliant view in contrast to a sensitive insecure one. For “imagination” (factor M) a score of 8, indicating that I am more imaginative, unconventional and absorbed in ideas and am less so for practicality and the prosaic.
This assessment shows its strength by the fact that I feel as though it matches with my life. Through this, I have gain insight to the fact that I could be helpful but almost to the degree in which I could be harmful to me. While reading the description, I was proud at some parts and discourage at others. However, I do have the understanding that every personality-type as a flaw. This assessment was useful in terms of gaining insight to my motivation, strengths and weakness of my personality. This can be a useful tool to use with clients.
Some key personality concepts that define who I am is introvert, intuitive, intuitive feeling, and judging. Introverted intuition allows me to appreciate a better clarity of perception of inner unconscious techniques. It allows me to act spontaneously and insightful as original resolutions present themselves, on a case by case basis. Basically this means that I follow my intuition and not how I may sense something.
The study of personality traits is beneficial in identifying the many variables that exist from human to human; the combinations of these variables provide us with a true level of individuality and uniqueness. In the field of psychology, trait theory is considered to be a key approach to the study of human personality (Crowne, 2007; Burton, Westen & Kowalski, 2009). This paper aims to identify a number of significant contributors who have played crucial roles in both the development and application of trait theory. This paper then moves focus to these theorists, outlining their theory and analysing both the strengths and weaknesses of those theories. An illustration of the methods used in trait measurement is given and includes the
I learned plenty of things from my results. My values-which I didn't see clearly-are now clear, and I found out the little unique things that make up my personality. From my personality survey, I am mostly artistic,
