Alcoholism, What is there to be done about it? In this day and age, when it comes to alcohol consumption and laws of alcohol use in countries around the world, many people debate about whether the legal drinking age should be raised, lowered, or stay the same. What about a society where alcohol would be illegal?? Well, when it comes to the sheer number of deaths that occur from drunk driving alone, you’d end up agreeing with it. To add to this, addiction is always a risk to be taken into consideration, because it leads to alcohol poisoning, eventually causing death. All in all, alcohol is something that is just as addictive as any other drug, and should it be treated as an illegal drug as well. The following are just some of the many reasons why this should be so.
First off, alcohol addiction and abuse among teenagers today is a bigger problem than ever before. The root of the problem lies in the fact that the teens are so exposed to the culture of this day and age, leading them to where they have easy access to alcohol. For example, their parents may already be alcoholics, and it's merely a few bad decisions later which could cause the child to have a few drinks and cloud their judgement. This is a big problem because their young bodies have never encountered anything like alcohol before, so in turn, the body does not know how to process it, and therefore leads to their downfall. A publication released by the National Institute of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAA) suggests that by age 18, an astounding 60% of US teens would have had at least one drink. Moreover, according to the NIAA, youth between the ages of 12 and 20 will often binge drink as well.
Secondly, regardless of age, people still tend to make bad decisions that ultimately lead to their downfalls. As a result, whatever the legal drinking age is, people will still be ignorant and follow their own ways instead of what is truly beneficial to them. According to Statistics Canada, in 2015, more than 72,000 incidents of drunk driving were reported by police departments around Canada at a rate of 201 accidents per 100,000 population. From this information, it can be concluded that people will still be irresponsible and will abuse their privileges in
Alcohol is a legalized drug that clouds judgment and reduces inhibition, making it a common factor in automobile accidents, violent crimes (including child abuse) and the spread of sexually transmitted disease.
In today’s society, underage drinking is seen all around us. It is in TV shows, movies, schools, and even in our own communities. Although it may be understood as something we are not supposed to do, many of these shows do not depict the real issues that can come from drinking under age. While only 11% of the alcohol sold in America is consumed by those under the age of twenty-one, it is still a horrific, nationwide problem. Alcohol is a drug that can make you do things you would never consider doing when you are sober and is very dangerous on top of that. These things can potentially hurt you and hurt those around you. The legal age for the consumption of alcohol should not be lowered because alcohol can affect the health of young people in many detrimental ways, it causes thousands of alcohol related vehicle accidents every year, not even including those that are underage, and it is one of the leading causes of sexual assault.
Almost everyone can agree that alcohol should not be given or allowed to children or young adults under a certain age. Alcohol is a substance that is very dangerous and if you used incorrectly or immaturely the consequences can be great danger to the users or the ones around them. The topic of lowering the drinking age has been in discussion for many decades. “Between 1970 and 1976, 29 states lowered their age for drinking alcohol. The results were catastrophic. Highway deaths among teenagers and young adults skyrocketed. Almost immediately, states began raising the minimum drinking age again.” “In 1984, Congress passed the Uniform Drinking Age Act, which required states to have a minimum drinking age of 21 for all types of alcohol
Every year, an estimate of 10,000 people in the United States die from motor vehicle crashes that involve a drunk driver. Not only is the number of accidents leading to thousands of deaths and injuries are excessive, but also the cost of repair for the vehicles is sky high. Even with these consequences, drinking and driving continue to be an issue. There is an estimate that of the 210 million licensed drivers that live in the United States, that 17% have a DUI conviction. To solve this predicament, it is important to think about what kinds of punishments for these drivers are necessary, taking an account for alcoholism, criminal record, number of offenses and blood alcohol content. It is also necessary to find ways to prevent future disasters and decreasing the rates of drunk driving per year. To come to a conclusion of the kinds of penalties for DUI’S is based on the understanding of the biological aspects of how alcohol affects brain functions and the psychological question of why people still do it.
“Raising the drinking age to 21 years across the country would prevent 32 annual deaths of male youth 18 to 20 years of age.” In today’s society, there are many drinkers. The age of these drinkers ranges from ages 18 to 20. A countless number of people complain about how drinkers have a negative impact on the environment and those around them. In the world we live in, drinking can cause many alcohol related accidents, family breakdowns, and can influence others to drink.
There is a problem in the controversy of whether or not twenty-one is the appropriate legal drinking age. Many state that they believe it should be higher, but I feel that it should be lowered to eighteen. Underage drinking has been a controversial issue for years but it is still not under control. Teens keep trying to buy alcohol with fake identification cards, drink, get into bars, and drink illegally. Some sneak into twenty-one and up areas. As a teen myself, I have seen that these things are happening right now in the world. Not only in college but in high school it was happening as well. There are a lot of facts that help reason with why the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen; the most obvious reason is too many people are drinking before they are twenty-one. Some liquor stores, bars, and clubs all want to make money and if they can get away with selling to underage teens then they will and don’t care. It is clear that the law has not been working in preventing undreage teens from drinking.
Although there are many commercials, ads, documentaries, seminars, etc. on the reasons why people should never drink and drive, you would be surprised how many people still get behind the wheel after having had more than just a drink or two. We might not realize it but every day, about 28 people in the United States die in car crashes that involve a drunk driver. This equals to one death every 51 minutes! It’s so sad because these statistics could be way better if people had a well thought out plan prior to going out drinking. There has been research found relating to Drinking and Driving Behaviors since this topic is now becoming more of an issue in this generation than it was in the past. For instance, Schell, Chan, and Morral (2006), found that some people who have a DUI record tend to have pretty high expectations of themselves even after having some drinks in their system (e.g., “I feel more relaxed when drinking"), so with that being said those people with higher confidence were the ones more likely to be engaged in drinking and driving activity. While intoxicated, we often don’t consider any negative consequences that can happen to us but as you’ll see on the news, on social media, in the newspapers, etc. driving while under the influence can be very dangerous and even fatal.
According to Columbia University, underage drinkers account for 11.4% of all alcohol consumed in the U.S. This means that out of 100 children, 11-12 children will have already have had their first drink. Of this 11.4%, 5,000 people die from this alcohol related event. This is an unsettled issue that men and women have been juggling through for years now, but this event should be coming to a conclusion. One can concede that alcohol is as bad as drugs, but does that mean we should ban alcohol as well? Sabrina Farrell, a student at Hillsborough Middle School, expresses her view on banning alcohol. She states, “While alcohol is a drug, people use alcohol for things other than just drinking it. It can be used for medical purposes and a cooking liquid.” This relates to another imperative point, students can get themselves intoxicated with medical and cooking alcohol. Such heedless thinking is what leads to the many catastrophes that we face day by day relating to alcohol, and this is also
Underage drinking has been going on for decades. However, besides from it being illegal the consequences and long term effects are not always discussed. Underage drinking puts our youth at greater risk of health issues and negative social outcomes. Approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die a year from alcohol related injuries. Such as, motor vehicle accidents, drowning, homicides, and suicides. Underage drinking also plays a role in drug use, academic failure, sexual activity, tobacco use, and has a huge impact on the brain. A United States study states that pre-adolescent drinking from ages 10-12 is an extremely vulnerable period for the development of future alcohol problems. Alcohol is the most widely used substance of abuse

As you begin to read this, while you are sitting at your desk or relaxing at home, someone else just got the call that their child, who was riding home from school with a friend, is dead. Someone was driving under the influence, and struck her daughter and her friend head on. They died before the medics could arrive, and any last goodbye was gone forever. The person who killed their daughter is an underage drinker, and has been drinking since he was fifteen years old. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in about forty-nine minutes someone else in America will get their life taken away because of the same reason. The problem is obviously alcohol, but what can we do to fix it? Well Ms. Bice, instead of passing
Alcohol – it’s a dangerous, harmful, international drug. It's legal… but you must be aware of the effects. Just a miuisule dose of alcohol can change your life – forever.
The first time I ever drank alcohol was with my volleyball team in high school. I almost always drank it with my teams. I felt as though I would not be accepted if I did not partake in the activity. As mentioned earlier, I had a bad incident with alcohol. A new, older guy kept giving me alcohol one night, and I woke up the next morning with texts from my friends telling me that they were banging on the door trying to get me out. This led to over a year of drinking as a way to try and forget. It was something I struggles with a lot in high school. Luckily, in college, I have been in a community that encourages the pursuit of God and honor. I cannot lie, there have been a couple times earlier on when I felt empty and drank underage. Sin and struggling with sin is a real thing, but I have been really striving to honor God and my body in all I do. My position would be that we are called to honor God and by doing so, we honor the law of the land that drinking is legal after 21 in America. I also believe that once someone is 21, they need to continue to respect God and their bodies by refraining from getting drunk. Not being conscious of decisions makes it impossible to consciously choose God in a scenario of drunkenness. I also believe that if you are in a state where you are unable to be present for a friend who may need you because you are too drunk that is not good. We should be able to be present and help a friend in need when they reach out. I did smoke a couple times in
According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, about 7.3 million Americans between the age of 12-20 report current alcohol consumption. (Underage) Although, many people think that after young adults graduate high school and move onto college that, is the first time they are introduced to alcohol. Most people are introduced to it while they are still in high school or at home during a young age. Many college students begin heavier-drinking or binge drinking, as a habit in college because alcohol is a way to overcome new social issues, ways to cope with homesickness, and habits that were brought upon from home.
