PROLOGUE
In a younger age, when my demeanour may have boasted a more timid persuasion, the environment that I lived in may have driven me to something close to insanity. The type of insanity fostered from the most simple embodiment of fear. Fear in the knowledge that no-one would not remain untouched by war and his efforts to turn the very Earth into his playground for the obtainment of some deluded victory, that would see thousands of fathers burying their sons in the coming dawn.
It was an age unlike any before. The State was the singular government of the world. Her laws were what we all lived by and her core principles drilled into our minds. Individuality is the flaw of progression. Separation is the key to progression. Your eyes lie, believe what you’ve been told.
The three quintessential laws. To me, they all seemed to mean the same thing: Do what you’re told and your life may become something encroaching on desirable.
However, not everyone was compliant, those reminiscent of times before, times of rights, individuality, freedom. The rebels fought for an equal society whereby one’s living standards were no longer dependent on their social classes. Continuously fighting for the Earth to be united once more. It seemed a nice idea in premise, equality for all who breathed. However, equality was never successful in the past, just an illusory value that people seemed to find comfort in believing. And besides, the State told us of the consequences of parity. The State
“It’s all about helping the next generations,” says Carli Lloyd. A famous soccer player herself wants to make equal pay achievable for women. Statistics show that full-time female workers, in general, earn about 79 cents for every dollar men make. Women’s equal rights have been a dilemma for a while now, and as the years go on, women are fighting to make it no longer an issue.
The collectivist society in which Equality 7-2521 lives is similar to the Nazi and Communist states of the twentieth century. It is controlled like the society in “The Giver.” The rulers of this society do not permit any individual to think freely. They must think they are nothing. “We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the state. Amen.”(21).
With landmark Supreme Court decisions in regards to education such as Brown v Board of Education, which made segregation within schools illegal, one would be inclined to believe that modern schools are void of any inequality. However, at a deeper glance, it is apparent that there is a glaring inequality within public school systems at the national, statewide, and even district-wide level. Such an inequality has drastic results as the education one receives has a high correlation to the college they will attend, and the job they will work. It is in society's best interest that public school systems be improved to equally supplement students with the tools necessary to succeed. While the public school system aims to reduce the inequality within it, they have proven ineffective in guaranteeing children of all races and economic classes an equal education.
In our constitution we are all equal, but why are we not paid equally? The gender wage gap movement will result in social change because it is bringing awareness to women in the workplace getting paid lower than her male counterpart. On the other hand, many other people may argue that the gap is not because of gender, it is because men work longer hours compared to women since they have children to take care of. I believe that this movement could improve by making people more aware of the through more examples such as the Women’s U.S.A. Soccer Team wanting more pay and equal pay.
In the book Anthem, Equality 7-2521 (Equality) lived in a society where everyone was equal and treated with disrespect. The society had no tolerance for being different and having their own opinion and ideas. People couldn’t even pursue the career they dreamed of having. They were punished for disobeying any of these “rules”. Despite Equality’s strict society, his motivations in conducting his experiments are finding individuality, starting a new revolution, finding freedom, and trying to become a scholar.
When Equality 7-2521 begins the novel by saying, “It is a sin to write this.” he has a different moral assessment of writing than at the end of the novel. Throughout Anthem, Equality’s actions affect how he views his society and the people around him. By the end of the story, Equality begins to realize that the government and society that he lives in might not be so perfect, and it might not be a sin to write. Equality’s eventual moral assessments of his sins are correct and are supported by; his growth throughout the story, the themes of independence developed in the novel and Ayn Rand’s concepts concerning communism. These are the three ideas that will be developed and explained in this paper.
After rebuilding an item from the Unmentionable Times, Equality begins to contemplate about his purpose and personal identity, “And a strange thought comes to us: we wonder, for the first time in our life, what we look like. Men never see their own faces and never ask their brothers about it, for it is evil to have concern for their own faces or bodies. But tonight, for a reason we cannot fathom, we wish it were possible to use to know the likeness of our own person” (Rand 21). Throughout the novel, Equality’s government forbids the community from obtaining any knowledge on their history. They force characters to live according to the way they set laws, and made it so that asking or having any information that was considered “unacceptable” was morally wrong; they claimed the Unmentionable Times were cruel times, and that they wanted to prevent such chaos again. In forcing a society to groupthink, people will never be able to introduce themselves to different lifestyles and experiences that would help them create their own opinions and values. By thinking as one, true happiness cannot be found- instead, people would simply be distracted by the routines they have adapted rather than living according to what is best suited for themselves. Without the introduction of new ideas, or anyone to initiate a change for better living, an irrational government is bound to grow.
Social justice is the fair and proper law that shows everybody is equal regardless of their color, race, gender, religion, etc. The thought of executing another human being is completely harsh! My whole life I have been thought that killing is wrong and that no human being has the right to kill another induvial. To my surprise, it’s what’s happening in our society every day. Giving the death penalty, has no justification. It’s another crime being committed, but this time by the government. The death penalty is usually given to a person that’s found guilty of a capital crime. However, it’s not easy to consider the death penalty as an easy way to punish the guilty. Though many people believe that the death penalty is the right way to punish people that has done hideous crimes, it’s possible to kill an innocent person, citizens pay million for the death penalty, and people of color are more likely to be given capital punishment. The death penalty is a violation of human rights and it should be abolished.
Equality’s journey began when he discovered the tunnel left from the Unmentionable Times- the era before the current regime was implemented. Since the totalitarian society where Equality resided heavily revolved around collectivism, the notion of personal achievement and the pursuit of higher knowledge were forbidden and regarded as heavy sins. The heaviest sin of all was being an individual. Everything and everyone was supposed to be treated impartially as the collective “We” and every decision was made by a specific Council. The regime’s primary motto exemplified this notion. “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, ONE, indivisible and forever” (Rand 19). As a result, many in the society in Anthem essentially lacked resolve and were resigned to their fates. The
Two of the most hot-button issues faced in the 2016 election included abortion rights and gun control. Since President Trump’s election these issues have remained at the forefront of political discussion. With several months still remaining, 2017 had already claimed the reputation for the deadliest year for mass shootings in America’s history (Wilson, 2017). We began 2017 with six killed in the Ft. Lauderdale airport and progressed, to 58 killed in Las Vegas at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, to the most recent incident that left 26 dead in a Texas church. In addition to these three most notable events, there have been many other shootings that have brought the causality total to 112 with 531 wounded from mass shootings alone (Wilson, 2017). These senseless deaths left the American public emotionally drained and searching for a solution to a problem that the government is hesitant to proactively address, but rather leaves to the individual state’s discretion.
Through the majority of the book, the main character, Equality 7-2521, speaks as if the idea of individuality was not able to be expressed in words. The law of the people was focused on the “We” and the total control of the individual by making one’s purpose to serve the group as a whole. The various councils of leadership enforced the Great Truth that states, “that all men are one and that there is no will save the will of all men together” (Rand 20) The main character's name even correlates to the belief the authorities held about the power of the whole of man in the community, not as an individual.
The everyday lives in the society were essentially nothing. Freedom was Slavery. Each individual was treated as a slave. Not only a slave in the sense that you needed to work for the party against your will but also in the sense that you had to do AND think exactly as you were told… Your emotions were to be contained by all means and the rage taken out in the two minutes hate and events of the like. Ignorance is Strength. When you were intelligent you knew what was going on in society, you were less vulnerable to the brain washing. Your intelligence lead curiosity and made you question the party. In the long run you became rebellious with your awareness. In the end your rebellion lead to torture and ultimately death. All
Today in our generation, much has changed over the years dealing with women’s rights. Women have more rights today than they did back in the early years. Conflict over social values affected the wider political environment and the readiness of institutions to facilitate the movement for equality (Chafe, W, 1978). Some people still believe today that women shouldn’t have a voice. “Empowering women isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do” (Barack Obama). In this paper it examines the equality in voting, sexual harassment, and women equality in not only the workplace, but in their everyday lives.
There is constantly cessation why women and men cohabitate, nurture, desire, and endure. Many shrug the similarities and differences to the side due to the complex nature that is involved in understanding the progression. Since the beginning of time, according to the bible, man was placed as the dominant sex, fending for the families well being. The woman has tended to the important jobs around the homestead as situations arose. Often in society, one will find himself in a battle depending on the views of the receiving recipients. Following is a dialogue explaining a safe and metro sexual view as a general whole.
In the 21st century, many people believe that we have overcome the obstacle of gender inequality and evolved into a society of fairness and righteousness. As many know, females can be just as proficient and qualified as males at any task. Though some efforts to off-set this gender imbalance is in place, it is still commonly acknowledged that many careers are stated to be a male job such as lawyers, and female jobs such as secretaries. Gender inequality is a visible fact in our society and in this essay, I hypothesize that gender inequality still exists as a result of factors such as post-secondary education differences of the two genders, role of females in families, female objectification, career choice differences of the two genders, and
