Persuasive Essay About Going To College

Have you ever just stopped to think about what it must be like to be “qualified” for a job yet be unemployed and homeless? Starving on the streets because you paid everything you had to an institution that was supposed to guarantee a better life, a more stable and successful career. Obviously this is an extreme case, not everyone who pays for college ends up living on the streets and broke, but almost every college graduate is in debt. For as long as college has been around it has always meant a better life, it’s always been that people who went to college were more successful, smarter, and would make way more money than someone who didn’t go to college ever would. Lately, however, college has become so expensive that going to college will more than likely leave you in debt working for years upon years just to pay back what you owe and then start making money for yourself.

The Case Against College, a paper written by Linda Lee, talks about the disadvantages of college, and how she doesn’t believe that college is worth it. She provides many good points pertaining to why she believes college isn’t worth it, such as providing statistics of the amount of people who get bachelor degrees or higher. She explains that as her son was going to college, she soon asked herself if he was really getting $1,000 a week's worth of education. Although Linda Lee has many good points, I would have to disagree with her about how college isn’t necessary. College shouldn’t just be seen as going to learn, it is also a big experience.

All of this information draws many people to the same conclusion: college is unnecessary. They assume that college is too expensive, or that it doesn’t adequately prepare people for the real world, or that the time spent in college can be used for significantly better things. I agree with the argument in, "Please Stop Asking Whether College is Worth It, by Derek Newton" saying how college can realistically get you a better job in the future. A better job in the future brings new beginnings and opportunities which many young adults want in life. Many young adults who are drop outs from college or just choose to not pursue it generally end up working in low income jobs which can’t provide for what they need in now times. The way life is, now and days can be expensive especially with housing, food expenses in general. . Many question is college worth the cost? I agree and disagree, in our society now a college education is not an option also it is not a privilege, but others would say it is necessity. From both sides there are views that contain a valid argument about the cost of college. There are people whom never stepped a foot in college after high school and are doing great than people who have their master’s degree. One example is if you do not attend college then you have a risk of being underemployed, unemployed and underpaid. As for another example if you do go to a college then you risk being mired in a student loans and that could become difficult to pay off. Freshman year of high school, do you remember the first moment we stepped into our first class, we all take a seat and think from point forward is senior year and college.

As kaufman states in her article, “Yes, college is worth it, and it’s not even close. For all the struggles that many young college graduates face, a four-year degree has probably never been more valuable.” In today’s studies, it has shown that the pay gap between college grads compared to others has reached a high point, with college students making 98 percent more an hour, which has increased from 89 percent five years ago. If more high school students planned on going to college and graduating the pay for these students would decrease. As many teenagers do not choose to face the challenge of college, the pay for those who do graduate increased.

In my opinion, college is not worth it. For starters, the stress that comes with it, can be overwhelming. According to procon.org, forty percent of students have claimed being frequently overwhelmed because of all the stress that comes with schooling. College may also lead to weight gain, insomnia, low self-esteem and even anxiety. As a matter of fact, due to having school, and some students even working a part-time: the stress can really have people feeling mentally and physically drained. Not to mention, many college graduates are unemployed. Statistics show that about half of students don’t even get a job once they graduate; scholars under the age of fifty either don’t have a job, or work in a part-time job. Many young people see going to school as a chore and only go because they have to, some students skip school because it’s boring and “unnecessary”. Many individuals are raised with the belief that one needs a college education in order to succeed in life. There’s a saying by John Green that says “every year, many, many stupid people graduate from college and if they can do it, so can you,” but as technology is constantly advancing and computers running 24/7, is a college education really necessary? There are some people who have never been to college and are doing better than people who have achieved a master’s degree. These people (Bill Gates, Steve Jobs) portray unrealistic expectations in youth. Is the cost of college worth a degree? The possibilities are endless because there are views from both sides that contain a valid argument.

Many think college is not worth it, however when I think of college not being worth it, I ask myself what is “it”? Is college not worth the sacrifice, time, or stress? In this case, many are not college material, simply for lacking the amount of effort and self motivation it takes to get through college. I oppose with the statement “For many, College isn’t worth it” because college is worth everything it takes for you to become great in the field you choose to study. Many people are not able or do not have the mindset to get through college, but that do not mean they will never have the mindset. Most people do not work hard under pressure or have great skills at testing or learning at a slow or fast pace. Some people believe that after highschool, since it is required, that going straight into an occupation is better for them. In my opinion, college is a stepping stool for achieving higher education and newer knowledge for the area you decide to infiltrate. I believe the educational world is bias to the brainpower of many people and people of the world is bias to the things they are capable of doing. Therefore, I am confident in stating college is worth it because having a college background ensures you quicker job opportunities, college gives you knowledge to become disciplined and self-motivated, and; college also enhances your communication skills.

Even though tuitiion costs have raised by almost 50% over the course of 30 years people still argue that college is still worth the price. One supporting reason that will always apply to this argument is, the fact that college graduates earn more money and have a much easier time finding employment than their peers who only have a highschool diploma. Others might state that though not all careers recquire a four-year degree, most do. With that being said a college degree can almost always give you ta head start and better skills for/in any field. Opposers also use Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg to say their choices to leave school were based off of billion dollar ideas, and that the two were already computer geniuses when their decisions were made. To add to that supporters of attending college would say , it’s not all about the learning material. The choice to attend college gives students the opportunity to gain financial responsibility, students usually learn how to put needs before wants when they attend college. Lastly whether it’s your peers or professors college provides students with the time to meet, and get to know new people, with new ideas who may challenge, inspire, encourage or even work alongside one another. This would be used by college supporters to show that college is also a networking tool, or maybe a student could just want a change of scenery. For some people the number 1 reason to go to college is to go away/move to a new location. Some may want to just escape the cold and move down south, others may want to get out of small towns and explore the world. There can be many reasons to attend college like just to live in dorms and experience a home without parents, all of these prove to opposers that college is still worth

While some might not consider it worth it because of the cost and other factors, others would disagree and say that college is worth the cost and other factors. Networking is extremely important; an individual could be the closest of friends with someone in college and ten years down the road get a job because they knew someone. A person can work and gain experience and knowledge, which allows a person to move up. Since there are many jobs today that do not require a college degree, going to college should not be obligated by students after high school. College is not for everyone, and no one should be forced to go.

Once highschool ends, you will think you are already done with school, and you can finally be free, and you are kind of right. However, your college education should not stop at high school, as high school only teaches you a few things. Going to college will teach things outside of just learning some basic math and writing formats. College will prepare you for life as well. By going to college, you will earn more, be more employable due to your accumulation of knowledge, and you will live a healthier life. College is not for everyone, but if you prefer a secure future then it is suggested to go to college. By pursuing business without a college degree, you could lose all your money and everything you have worked for at any moment if you are not cautious. With a college degree, you can earn a decent salary with a secure job.
