The debate over whether college is worth it has been a topic of discussion for decades. Going to college is worth it for a variety of reasons. People who go to college and get degrees on average have higher employment rates, larger salaries and get more benefits than high school graduates. People who go to college also have better interpersonal skills and are better prepared for society. Most jobs today require a college degree and jobs that don’t require it, in order to move up the ladder in the company you may need a college degree. It is true that you don’t need to go to college in order to become successful and wealthy. According to a Northwestern University study, 16 to 24 year old high school dropouts are 63% more likely to get arrested. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from September 2008 to September 2009, 43% of college graduates volunteered in some way and 19% of high school graduates volunteered in some way. Also in 2005, CollegeBoard did a study and found that 9% of college graduates donated blood, compared to 6% of people who have some form of college education, 4% of high school graduates and 2% of high school dropouts. Another reason that college graduates are more adept to society is because they have lower poverty rates. Not being in poverty gives people more opportunities to contribute to society. CollegeBoard found that in 2008, people with bachelor degrees had only a 4% poverty rate and high school graduates had a 12% poverty rate. In the same study they found that married couples with bachelor's degrees were 1.8% less likely to be in poverty, compared to 2.7% of associate's degree married couples, 4.6% of couples with some college education, and 7.1% of high school graduates. Just because someone doesn't go to college doesn't mean they aren't equipped for society or can't contribute but college graduates are more likely to be ready for the real world and are able to give back to society
