Makeup application has become a popular topic in this generation. The creative ways makeup can be used is very interesting to watch and the way products can transform people is truly incredible. There are constantly makeup videos trending on the internet, and the amount of views they receive is astronomical. When scrolling through social media, there are countless makeup tutorials showing all different ways to do makeup. Makeup in itself has become very trendy over the last five years, but some people are taking it to the extremes. Although individuals that are applying heavy amounts of makeup aren’t surgically changing their appearance, the way the makeup is being applied is giving the person a whole new look. The excessive use of makeup is creating a negative effect on women because of how much it is altering the look of ones’ face.
The overuse of makeup has become something that is very popular in our society today. Applying makeup is great, and using it in somewhat natural ways is great too, but the way people are using makeup today is becoming a little too excessive. “Makeup is awesome, there’s no question there, but we tend to abuse cosmetics. We pound on pressed powder like theres no tomorrow and go overboard with the coats of mascara to get thicker and longer lashes” (Oliver, 2014, para. 1). The overuse of liquid contour, applying one-hundred coats of nail polish to your nails, and the massive eyebrow shapes are starting to become a bit unnecessary. This trend is being seen all over the internet, schools, and in the workplace. Women are not altering their faces by surgery, but they are giving their faces a whole new look by applying all of this makeup.
This trend is occurring all over the world and many celebrities are influencing these specific make up ideas. Kim Kardashian is an icon for her contour kit and how precise she can make the style look on her face. “That carefully curated look — the one you instantly recognize while mindlessly thumbing through Instagram — is no accident” (Decker, 2017, para.1). Not only does contouring trend all over social media, so does thick nail polish and overdrawn eyebrows. Young girls watching these videos are starting to believe that this trend
When it comes to us women wearing makeup, it seems like we are shamed if we do, and shamed if we don’t. Although, the face powder in Renaissance era were harmful to skin, I am still glad that they came up with the idea. Without the Renaissance’s idea of face powder, Mr. Max Factor would not have invented the pancake foundation. Half of my makeup collection are: cake foundation, liquid foundation, face powder, setting powder—you name it. What can I say? Perfect skin ideal is hard to emulate, especially if you are genetically prone to acne. Nevertheless, it seems as though, whether you embrace the significance of makeup or choose to step out of the house—"bare-faced," you will be criticized either way. Because one day you attended a family gathering
Through each generation, makeup symbolizes how women are superior, however, society today has misinterpreted the intentions of makeup believing that it is a response of the lack of confidence and there are these accusations made of it promoting false advertisement. Currently, these statements provoked some makeup artists to come together and create a challenge called #ThePowerOfMakeup, as an act of protest to spawn the true understanding that makeup is not an excuse for women, or men, to cover up their inner beauty from society. Therefore, the controversy is whether the introduction of makeup has become an option for women to mask their insecurities or is its considered an artistic way for people to express their individuality. Nevertheless,
With hundreds of well known companies producing makeup, thousands of Youtube videos showing how to correctly apply makeup, and millions of women who wear makeup, it is clear that the cosmetics industry is a monumental market, with makeup and other cosmetic products becoming common household items around the world. L’Oreal, one of the biggest cosmetic companies in the world, grossed twenty four billion dollars alone in 2014, and projections indicate that the number will continue to climb in the years to come (“2014 Annual Results”). It’s hard to look around without seeing some sort of advertisement for a new and improved version of lipstick or mascara, and with an industry so pervasive in our society, why is the way that we produce these
Are you interested in makeup? You’re really good at it or even don't know much about it but want to learn and/or extend your education in the makeup industry? Makeup is like a different type of art. It's amazing how cosmetic products can change the way a person looks, going from no makeup to a gorgeous glam look. Seeing someone's confidence boost up and making them feel even more beautiful is what amazes me.
Professional makeup artist and founder of her own line of cosmetics Bobbi Brown once stated that she “believe[s] that all women are pretty without makeup- but with it, the right makeup can be pretty powerful.” This statement is relevant to all people and says that all women have natural beauty, but with the optional added touch of makeup, their beauty can be even further accentuated. Public figure, Kat Von D encourages women to embrace their most natural selves through her own cosmetic line. The print advertisement of Kat Von D’s “Lock-It Concealer Creme” shows women of all colors, wearing minimal makeup, probably just foundation and concealer, and embracing their natural skin color and their ethnic background with her wide array of shades for each skin shade. Makeup over the years hasn’t always catered to people embracing their natural skin. The origins of foundation makeup lead to some health risks and didn’t accept people for their natural skin tone, Kat Von D’s makeup line consists of solid, well formulated, and successful products, and the influence of social media has impacted the growth of the beauty world for all people.
Did you know that makeup has been around for 12,000 years. The ancient Egyptians were the ones that invented the beautiful work of art …. Makeup. Studies show that about 44% of women are “ dependent on makeup”. What’s the purpose of makeup? Why do so many people wear it? How do you even put it on? For beginners, It’s good to know the purpose of wearing makeup, the different types of makeup, and the proper application to create a fresh- faced work of art.
Beauty standards had completely shifted in the time of the 1920s, as women were attempting to achieve anything opposite than the previous “Victorian” standards. This change was a kind of movement, and resulted in products that would draw attention their new looks. The cosmetics business advanced and was prevalent in enhancing one's beauty. The purpose was to resemble movie stars, actresses with their “beautiful eyebrows and eyelashes.” Women considered to be “average” would used makeup to draw attention to their face as they strived to look in resemblance to movie
Although cosmetology in history dates back to ancient times, there are advancements with new beauty supplies, and hair styling tools. It may appear that makeup is being reproduced, the products are improving “everyday more of the beauty’s industry growth is being powered by the newest science, and technology fields but, and using this to promote new beauty products” (Newtechbuy). From eyelash growth formulas to facial correcting products, the use of technology in beauty is making it possible for those working on the newest formulas to advance the quality of beauty products further (makeup&beautylovers).
Women are attempting to meet the beauty expectations that society has set; therefore, women result to products and supplements to enhance their beauty. Products and procedures that promote the considerably flawed depiction of beauty include: powerful cosmetics, weight loss technologies, and plastic surgery. From the 2000’s up until today, technologies in all areas of daily life have been introduced and enhanced the way of living. First, makeup is almost perceived as a necessity for women. Specifically, makeup has been formulated to transform your physical appearance entirely.
Wearing makeup has become a social norm for women. Little girls put on costume makeup to play dress up because they see the “beautiful” women on TV and in the media wearing it. Those “beautiful” women become the young girls’ idols and they start to admire their looks and replicate
It was not only till the Nineteenth century where makeup became gender inclusive to society and became a women dominated industry. As the years progressed society was conditioned to think that makeup was made for women. Outside ancient Egypt women had done above and beyond to enhance their beauty to become better suited for a mate or to be considered beautiful. Before makeup was even introduced to world, women went to the extremes of using burnt matches to darken their eyes, using berries to stain there cheeks and lips, and even swallow oxblood to improve overall complexion. And if it wasn’t for the help of social media, men would still be struggling to this day to get the cosmetic recognition that they deserve. Gender roles has always created social boundaries for not only men but for women as well.Women have also dealt with the hardship of trying to be accepted in a society. Since the nineteenth th century restraints of not being able to vote, or work has carried on to the Twentieth century. Women are taken seriously when it comes to sports or having physical strength. Till this day women are making less on their paychecks compared to men. Both genders have their disadvantages and both deal with trying to break the labels that have been created. A new societal culture is happening and regardless of gender the traditional constraints that have been created it is becoming less significant in not only the
Make-up has been beloved by woman throughout history. Some wear a little, some wear a lot, it can make a statement, or it can be simple. We are introduced to make-up at a young age. As a young child we all loved to play with our mother’s make-up. I know firsthand that smothering my face in my mother’s deep purple eye shadow and bright red lipstick was a favorite past time of mine. Even now as a grown adult I buy my younger cousins make-up kits for holidays and birthdays. I laugh and snap pictures of them drawing a neon pink smile across their faces with lipstick. But if you take a look at what ingredients go in to that lipstick that that ten year old has in his or her hand, it would not be so funny.
In a society where our appearances are virtually everything, there is an abundance of ways to achieve the look that is wanted. Since it is pricey, and sometimes even unaffordable to get plastic surgery (undergoing a surgical procedure to restore, reconstruct, or alter the body), people decide to use makeup to get the look they are wanting. Buying makeup products can get expensive as well, but thankfully there are more affordable alternatives. For example, there are “drugstore” makeup brands, which are the products sold at Target, Walmart, or grocery stores; and, there is “high-end” makeup brands, the products sold at premium retail stores. Since not everyone can afford the high-end makeup or do not want to pay a premium price on makeup, people have found drugstore brands that mimic high-end brands. The base of all makeup is foundation, a skin-colored product that covers imperfections and makes the skin look flawless. In particular, two popular foundation brands are MAC Studio Fix Fluid, and Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless. MAC is considered a luxury product, and Maybelline is a value brand. These are both great products, have very similar qualities, and in the end, will almost give the consumer the same look.
Actress and comedian Phyllis Diller once said, "It's a good thing that beauty is only skin deep, or I'd be rotten to the core". Unfortunately, beauty can be a harm deeper than skin. People have been using beauty products and cosmetics from shampoo to plastic surgery. As we advance in technology and science, it has now come to light that these products contain extremely dangerous chemicals. As a result, people are becoming much more aware and demanding new and natural products. For this reason, Companies have reached for natural ingredients to add on to their chemically soaked products. Many people, especially women, use plastic surgery to change the way they look to feel beautiful. People argue that undergoing plastic surgery is at their own risk for wanting to achieve a better physical appearance. Without these multibillionaire cosmetic companies, many people can be left unemployed. However, there needs to be laws demanding the discontinue of animal testing and all daily beauty products should be FDA approved before going into market in the United States. It is human nature to feel good, pretty and pleased with our appearance, but it should all be done in a safe, nontoxic manner.
“Makeup has been used to enhance the beauty of both men and women for over thousand years. It its through teaching others how to apply makeup, we can strive to help others feel comfortable and confident in their own skin. Wearing makeup help embrace our natural features and may also help express the ideas in a creative way like art.”
