Imagine a world where people can not go outside because their body is not able to move because of how much people weigh and need to stay inside where machines are helping monitor the health of the body. If the obesity epidemic and obesity related disease don't stop now that is how the future world will look like for the next generation and it does not seem nice. Back in the 1970’s people would have never expected a future like that because it was all about healthy foods and exercising regularly. Now in 2017 it is all about eating at fast food restaurants and binge watching shows on Netflix. Many people's mentality today is why go outside to exercise when there is technology as entertainment where the gossip and entertainment is at? People fail to realize that lying on the couch or in bed after eating is a higher risk for obesity. Personal responsibility is what people are failing to accept when it comes to obesity, blaming others for something people can become educated about seems easier. The media is also at fault for all the propaganda about unhealthy fast food, and not the healthy food that benefits the persons body. 18-26 year-olds have the chance to change this generation's mentality about obesity and change the future generation alongside the media who should change what is being advertised and make the people choose a healthier and better option.
Dating back to the 70s, kids have either gone home to home cooked meals or to nothing at all. Parents were not able to prepare any food for their children since both parents, or a single parent, had to work to provide for the family. Additionally, frozen foods were seen as a shortcut to help parents prepare meals for their children. Obviously, fast food was the next option for parents to provide a quick, affordable source of food and home cooked meals were seen as a thing in the past as fast food chains appealed to children with bigger portions. In the article Don’t Blame The Eater by David Zinczenko, Zinczenko states “These were the only available options for an American kid to get an affordable meal.”(3) It was the easiest way to a meal than having a late dinner. Plus with no nutrition facts on the back of a food’s packaging, the consumer would not know
As years go by American weight struggle has been getting worse. People with diabetes today has more than double since 1994. While there are ways to help bring down obesity, most companies have not taken action. There are many factors to why obesity has only been increasing all these years.
Obesity is a very serious subject that a lot of people take lightly, especially us as Americans. America is the most obese country in the world. Statistics show that 300,000 people die a day in the United States of America due to obesity. This clearly shows that we have a serious problem that is massively underestimated. Obesity is also something that countries all across the world suffer from. For example, Australia is also one of the most obese countries in the world, and 50,000 people die a year from obesity in Australia. That’s 140 people who die per day in Australia. To solve the problem of obesity the prices of junk food should be raised and the prices of healthy food should be lowered and more convenient.
Over one third of the US population suffers from obesity and overweight. According to a study reported by the NIH (National Institute of Health), more than 1 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight, and 1 in 3 adults were considered to be obese. Children are also victims to this growing epidemic, with 1 in 6 children/adolescents anywhere from 2 to 19 were considered to be obese. This is a growing problem, and it has been for the last 20 years in America.
Everybody has their own opinions, but who is truly to blame for children eating street food often? It is a rising problem that children are choosing large meals in comparison to small meals that parents are purchasing for them. People becoming overweight is an issue that has been rising since the 1970s. At young ages, they are experiencing diseases and conditions associated with obesity which was never an issue before the 1970s. Since the 1970s, the obesity epidemic has started rising as an issue due to latch key kids, divorced parents and boxed foods becoming popular for teens to make at home alone. In the 1970s, the only term for obesity was being overweight, then as more children became overweight it was known as obesity by the late 1900s. America's millennials were becoming more introduced to processed foods and supersizing of those foods which made them gain weight rapidly. It is up to the young adults of now to fix the obesity epidemic by changing the way they are eating through educating themselves. They are the future parents and lawmakers that will hopefully decrease obesity in future children and people. Millennials and fast food companies need to take a step forward and reduce the amount of people becoming overweight by taking personal responsibility for the issue and promoting healthier foods.
Obesity is a growing epidemic in the American people, but what is the root of this seemingly unavoidable problem? According to David Zinczenko, it is the failings of the American society, but in the opinion of Radley Balko, it’s the facilitation of the government's support and the failure to take self-responsibility from the people themselves. They both have an opinion as to what the cause of obesity in America, but Zinczenko has the better argument. Through the use of real-life examples, refutation, and sound logic/reasoning Zinczenko writes a more persuasive piece than Balko.
More than 2.1 billion people are overweight in our nation. This is a shocking statistic because more and more people are becoming overweight each year. It is important to recognize this is an epidemic in our nation. It is bad for our health and something needs to be done to stop this problem. Recent articles are talking about why people are becoming overweight or obese. The three culprits to blame people becoming overweight are the consumer, government, and the Food Industry.
Eating healthy and exercising often, the two things seen as key against fighting obesity. While these are very important, they are not the only tools in the fight against obesity. Before we can rely solely on eating healthy and daily exercise, we need to reform how the issue of obesity is being attacked. Childhood obesity has become an exponentially growing epidemic that has no evidence of stopping anytime soon. The government needs to step in and help with the fight because of food deserts, faulty advertising, and nutrition guidelines, which are all factors out of the public's control. Once we figure out these issues, the real fight can begin.
Justin Timberlake, one of the most popular recording artists today, filmed a commercial for McDonald's. A spokeswoman for McDonald's said "the campaign is getting "buzz on the street." The song he sings in the commercial was also to be released as a full length single (MacArthur, 2003, p. 2).
Body image and obesity are always going to be hot-button issues as long as fast foods restaurants are still in business. Obesity is a disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of health problems. In other words, obesity is a condition where a person has accumulated so much body fat that it might have a negative effect on their health. Proportions of food are different from decades ago compared to now. Movie popcorn serving size was five cups with calories of 270 back in the 1980’s, now movie theatres are serving big tubs with loads of butter with calories of 630. Today proportions of food have really expanded causing calorie consumption to go up. To reduce obesity people should focus on educating the youth, promoting healthy eating and doing exercise at least an hour a day. Easily adding vegetables to what we eat, substituting that In-n-Out burger for something way less caloric.
Obesity, in addition to the negative impact on human health, also leads to considerable expenses for the global economy: reduced productivity, increase of the amount of fuel for transportation, rising medical expenses. To resolve the problem of excess weight is annually spent about two trillion dollars.
With so many diseases out in the world today, obesity should not be one of them because we have direct control over choosing to maintain a healthy weight. Today in America it seems that everyone is in a rush to get to nowhere. They jeopardize their health by becoming overstressed and mistreating their bodies that it is no wonder so many have different types of diseases and conditions like high blood pressure, heart problems, and sadly, obesity. Contrary to popular belief, the act of maintaining a healthy weight can be done by following three general rules. First, it is important to sleep between six to eight hours. Second, it is important to keep an exercise routine. Most importantly, it is crucial to be mindful of the type of food one consumes to fuel their body. These, along with other more personalized rules, puts control back into a person’s hands in avoiding having to go through the pains and trials of being obese.
This generation is dying and no one is doing much about it. The people have no one to blame but themselves. They give into temptation and pay for food that is terrible for their health. Although is it really the people's fault? The food industries are made to finesse people into being consumers. Starting with making healthier foods extremely expensive and then making the unhealthy foods less than a couple buck plus and three times the healthy serving size. The current generation has to fix the current problem so the future generation will not have to face it too. Time is running out on this generation. Instead of blaming the people tell the food industries to change their whole ordeal and help parents educate their families on what really goes in their food.
All over the world obesity is becoming a continuously growing problem, especially in the United States. Daily, countless amounts of people suffer with the negative side effects caused by obesity; whether it be heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes. The outcomes are extremely hazardous to any individual struggling with obesity, and could eventually become deadly. Knowledge on how to treat and prevent obesity is immensely critical to society, but much of the population in the United States lack the education necessary to do so. This widely increasing issue within the nation requires instantaneous awareness, or the end results could become worse. Therefore, more individuals should attempt to increase their education on how to treat, prevent, and gain more knowledge on the causes of obesity because many lives now and in the future are in jeopardy.
In the last few years many programs have been started to try to combat obesity. Some have worked in different ways. Programs like Play 60, their main goal is to “To make the next generation of youth the most active and healthy.” The NFL launched the program in 2007
Young adults are always on the go and live fast-paced lifestyles; they do not make the time to provide for their nutritional needs and resort to fast food. Unhealthy food can be quick and easy after a long day; however, this ultimately leads to obesity if it becomes a habit. Obesity has the potential to increase the risk of diseases and health problems. Some health issues that follow this are: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breathing problems and much more. The majority of young adults in America struggle with being overweight or obese and it will continue to grow unless Americans make the decision to change. Individuals are unaware of the health risks related with eating fast food frequently and are ignorant to what is in their food and choose to indulge instead. Many unhealthy foods include chemicals and additives to leave consumers wanting and craving more. It is indisputable that ending obesity in teens begins with the overweight individuals and their drive to have a healthier lifestyle along with the support and encouragement of America.
