You know that summer vacation that you always take with your family? Well if the school board switches to year-round schooling, you will no longer be able to have that vacation. Year-round schooling is turning into a world-wide new experience. With going to school all year long it ruins old traditions like that family vacation in the summer, and having that long stretch of summer relaxation by the pool and on the beach. Some other issues with year-round schooling is the rising cost and schedule adjustments.

I think it's funny that the subject of year-round school is still a topic of debate. The reason is I just want to have good teachers and get a good education. I really don't care when and how the schedule is set up because I know my mom and dad will support me and get me to where and when I need to be. But, if I had a choice I would choose to have a schedule similar to what Nick Castellino writes about in his letter. I feel that of the two letters Nick wrote the one I agreed with more. Nick's letter, seemed to me, to be mainly about doing away with year-round school.

Have you ever thought about how year-round schooling can be beneficial to students? In today’s society, many school districts have been switching from a standard school year to year-round schooling. Year round school helps with the complications of childcare issues. Parents won 't have to worry about paying for their child to go to a daycare or a summer camp. Child care can be very expenses and the child might even be upset about going to daycare everyday of the summer. Another child care issue is that if families have older children they could get stuck with watching their younger siblings. Then most of teenagers summer are spent watching their younger siblings when they could be enjoy their summer the way they want.

With students taking classes all year round they are constantly using their knowledge and adding on to it, making it awfully difficult to forget. For most people they don't like school. People look towards those nice long summer breaks. however a lot of things happen over the summer, the main thing that happens is that students tend to forget everything they learned during the previous school year. By the end of the the first month of summer, all that knowledge has leaked out of the brain. Then when the students return in the fall, the first month of school is wasted by re-teaching students what they should have already learned last year. I am in complete opposition to considering starting the year-round schooling, due to the many disadvantages that come along with it. There are many disadvantages that come along with year-round schools, such as not being able to have other learning opportunities outside of schools. It gives students a lot more time to study during the regular school year. It also helps in the way that teachers will no longer have to cram if a certain class is behind on a lesson. Teachers will be able to take their time, and finish the lessons out with detail and structure. There is also convenience in a sense that teachers will no longer have to spend the first few weeks of the year reviewing. In most schools the first few week’s time is spent by reteaching curriculum that was already taught in years past (USA Today 7). Another thing year round school will help with is not having to make up for a holiday or snow day. Most schools make up for the school days that were missed because of these reasons. During year round school these days that are missed will not have to be worried about. Parent teacher conferences also fall under this same category. Teachers do not need to work around these school dismissals anymore during the year round school schedule. Most year round school schedules have 45 days of school and are followed up by 15 days off (USA Today 7). The 15 days off will give students that time to recuperate that was mentioned earlier. The breaks in between the 45 days really give the students time to “bounce back” and continue to learn throughout the year.
