Year-round school: It is Not What It Sounds Like
Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which one can use to change the world.” Year round school would be beneficial to students because they would have that education year round, they would have more breaks in between, and it would even benefit the teachers.
First things first, what is year-round school? Having school year round does not mean that we go to school non stop without stopping for any breaks except for holidays and weekends. Year round school in its most basic definition takes a long summer break, and spreads those days off throughout the year. So instead of two and half months of summer and not many breaks in the middle of the school year. You would have say one month of summer vacation and those days could be put into fall break making it two weeks break instead of three days. The basic structure of year round school is you start with forty five days of school, then there would be fifteen days for fall break. Then you would go back to school for another thirty days, after that you would have three days off for thanksgiving break. Once you reach that point you have fifteen days of school then it is christmas break, which is fifteen days off. Then you would have another fortyfive days of school. At this point you are at spring break which gets another fifteen days of break. The final home stretch of that school year is just forty five days then you still have thirty days to summer break. When people talk about a “traditional calendar,” they mean schools that use the more accepted schedule, where the students and teachers are able to have two months for summer vacation. According to results from the National Center for Education Statistics, “86 percent of public schools in the United States operate on a traditional calendar, even though it’s original purpose – so that children could help parents harvest crops – is no longer an important consideration” (Chen two). Now schools are starting to see how the year-round schedules are more efficient for students today, and more and more schools are getting rid of the “traditional” school calendar.
