Costa Rica is home to only two zoos, however, it is one of the first nations to attempt to close all of their zoos within their country and release their captured animals back into the wild. Costa Rica was also the first country within their region to ban sport hunting completely. However, the government set the Simon Bolivar Zoo and the Santa Ana Conservation to close in March of 2014, which the zoos claimed was not enough notice to end their contract. Because of this, the zoos took it to court, where it was decided that the government did terminate their contract early, so the zoos have been granted more time. Now, they have ten more years until they will be forced to close in 2024 (Laylin). CNN writer Rafael Romo describes that the “most recent dispute over zoo animals has already made its way to the courts, and much like the animals at its center, it’s already getting wild.” The Simo Bolivar Zoo will be turned into a botanical garden, and as for the Santa Ana Conservation, it will be turned into a park. …show more content…
Once the caged animals are released, they will either be sent to animal sanctuaries, or they will be let go into the wild. People have always criticized the Costa Rica zoos by saying that their cages were cramped and that the animals were living in unsanitary conditions, which the zoos have promptly denied (Romo). Nonetheless, the government will still close zoos as soon as possible to end the caged life that these animals are leading. When Costa Rica closed its zoos, the debate about whether or not zoos should still exist was reignited to becoming a hot topic. However, based upon the evidence, they should still exist, seeing as they help many
75 big cats, including Tatiana, have been killed because of such incidents. The solution? PETA and other say get rid of zoos.” Zoos not only hurts human but it also hurts animals. This quotes emphasizes that many zoo animals are victims of death.
About it. Some people believe that the zoos are bad for animals. In my opinion animals need to be free and were taking it away from them. There sad being locked up in a cage.
Zoos may seem fun to visit and exciting to see the animals; but what you don’t see is the suffering and depression that lies in these helpless creatures. There are many arguments whether or not zoos are good or bad, and if they should be removed or kept. Several think that zoos should be abolished or at least very much improved, due to animal cruelty. While, others want zoos to stay because it is beneficial for the animals and people. I strongly believe that zoos aren’t good for both the public and animals for numerous reasons.
This zoo has gone through a lot to get to it's family fun, animal loving atmosphere that is the Como Zoo today. Unfortunately there are still many zoos around the world that have not had the same support and care for the animals. Many of these careless zoos are located out of the United States. In Egypt, the Giza Zoo still has the large cats locked in small cages. They don’t give these animals their needed exercise and a way to flex their muscles. The Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia is labeled as “the world’s cruellest zoo,” which “has seen one tragedy after the next in recent years -- from a young lion found hanged in his enclosure and a giraffe with plastic lining her stomach to a tiger fed with meat laced with formaldehyde.” Many of these and other bad zoos have had many underground trading of furs and living animals as well as unnecessary deaths. Even the San Antonio Zoo in Texas has been exposed as mistreating their elephants. Luckily these zoos have been exposed by animal rights groups and are pushing for the improvement of these
Chimpanzees swing from trees at the Lincoln zoo in Chicago. Cheetahs run and play at the National zoo in D.C. Giant Pandas Eat Pounds and pounds of bamboo at the San Diego zoo. They all have one thing in common. They Are all Endangered of disappearing from their natural habitat, and zoos are trying to protect and save these animals. Zoos across the country are changing these days to do research on animals, help protect endangered, and Educate young viewers.
Thesis: All zoos should be overhauled and replaced with free-range territories or back into the wild to help these animals avoid the detrimental effects that zoo’s cause on their health and to stop teaching people that is okay to imprison these animals.
Or that zoos and aquariums keep a supply of antacids on hand because so many captive dolphins develop ulcers” (Winders)? Costa Rica closes down those zoos because the facilities cannot take care of those animals properly, thus those animals would be healthier in the wild. The animals being healthy and happy is what important. Costa Rica sets an example on how governments should act if the zoos’ actions are not beneficial to animals.
There is a major debate going on about if zoos are continued. There are the couple of reason why the zoo considered to not continue. Some of the reason are that people are questioning zoos if they should continue because of the Panamanian, the golden frogs are like a national icon in Panama are going to be extinct. Zoos have been trying for years to breed them, but deforestation in their homes which leaves little chance that the frogs could make it. There is another debate is about they shouldn’t continue because there was this little kid who feel in a gorilla’s habitat, Harambe, which they had to shoot. Another debate that goes along that Zoo shouldn’t continue, are zoos are playing a part in both types of conservation of biodiversity? The two types of conservations of biodiversity are In-Situ and Ex-Situ. In-Situ is where you’re protecting the animal in its natural habitat. Then Ex-Situ is where you take care of the animals somewhere outside their natural homes.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t hide the fact that visitors may unintentionally or intentionally lead to the death of an animal by feeding (despite warnings) or by introducing foreign bodies into the enclosure. There are many cases in where visitors intentionally mess with the animals to receive reactions, that is through throwing objects or calling to them. In 1874, when the Philadelphia Zoo opened, a sloth was poked to death by the walking sticks and umbrellas of visitors within a week (“From Zoo Cage”). Zoos need to start taking into consideration the intent of humans on seeing the animals and that the animals being so close to humans will negatively affect their health. Another cause for the physical health deterioration of animals in captivity
There have been a lot of problems with animals in zoos. It has gotten to the point where zoos are hated and looked upon as a places of animal torture. Are zoos really that bad? Turns out, they are. They do not have enough space, they do not allow the animals to communicate with each other, and they sell the animals to cruel circuses.
Why are zoos taking animals out of the wild? They Are meant to be wild. They take animals out of their natural habitat. I believe that zoos are not good for animals
Recently, in England at the most popular zoo there is monkies were forced to breed. After the monkies been breed, they took the babies and sold them to many horrible places. Right after they got shipped out, the adults monkeys and other monkeys in the zoo were killed. They killed these monkeys because they didn’t have the money to care and feed them. If you think this is bad you should see what other zoos do. It’s very upsetting. Zoos need to be banned for the safety of animals.
Some people agree that animals should be kept in the zoo. They said it would be safer for the animals and they won’t be extinct. The amount of possibilities of them dying, shot by hunters or any other reason, still higher than the chances of their survival. Food and shelter are provided, medicine, and their breeding is being controlled. And many of the wild animals in zoos are ones that are on the endangered list as their amounts are rapidly diminishing. Letting them loose and returning them to the wild is not necessarily a safe option. (Mylot, 2007) In fact, zoo can be one of the educational studies for children and people who are interested with animals. Zoo is the only place that we can have an opportunity to see animal’s life really close and sometimes we can touch them. Zoos also provide lots of information about certain animals, children can have chance to get out of the classroom and learn so they can see natural beauty from different species of animals. Even children can see them from discovery channel but that’s really different if you see animal in real world, for an example, if you see crocodile, snake or shark in the movie, maybe you won’t afraid than you see the real one. According to Tudge, (1992, p.56) Zoos are the place where people can study animals and their habitat, even scientist don’t need to go
Zoos hold animals in confined spaces compared to the wilderness that may be only a few miles away. What makes it more fun and amazing to go find animals in the wilderness is the adrenaline rush. Humans are taking away that rush when we place animals behind glass or inside electrified cages and so many other forms of containment. Some zoos even treat their animals like they are Death Row inmates in max security prisons. Sure the caretakers and owners of the zoo try to make their enclosures and as close to the wilderness as possible, but if there is a rifle pointed at the animal, they would hardly even show.
The Lincoln Park Zoo should be banned in order to protect animals from unsuitable enclosures and inadequate living conditions. Many of us feel the obligation to give animals the same rights as ourselves, so the idea of closing this zoo will prevent the capturing of wildlife and help end the miseries of several animals. By shutting down the Lincoln Park Zoo, numerous controversial issues and struggles will brought to attention on how to care for captive wildlife, or where animals would go without a home. However, if public zoos planned to close within the next year, hundreds of animals that are currently residing in the exhibits will be transported to an animal care center and then released back into the wildlife. This would allow for animals to roam free without being enclosed within a limited space, and be able to enjoy their natural habitat. Getting rid of cages reinforces the idea of interacting with animals and biodiversity in parks and reserves in a natural way.
