Nowadays, governments internationally have control of many things: finance, laws, and militaries- and, somehow, such a primitive and natural thing as the right to love. Same sex marriages are criminalized in 78 international territories and are not recognized as legal unions in over one hundred countries. Same-sex marriages should be legal and accepted internationally, without bias in front of the law and amongst the citizens. I, as a strong supporter and member of the LGBTQ+ community, believe and know that one’s sexual orientation is as unalterable as the color of your skin. If legal adversity to an inherent trait such as skin tone was abolished over one hundred and fifty years ago, then why is it that we live in a world where something just as indispensable, like love, is restricted and feared by a higher authority?
Many elected officials have encouraged issues of discrimination. For example, president Bill Clinton. Interpret his accomplishments during his presidency as you will, but one thing he got done was signing a Defense of Marriage Act into law in 1996. The act defined marriage as 'a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife' and defined a spouse as 'a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.' While the act did not prevent states from recognizing same-sex marriage, it created constraints on the benefits acquired by all legal same-sex couples. And then we have Mr. George W.
