Being adopted is different. It can be very confusing as a child as you have to decide whether you you should think “why me” or “lucky me.” When I was one day old, I was adopted by my parents. From a very young age, they have always made it clear to to me that they were not my birth parents. Adoption is a difficult process and if I would not have been adopted, my life would have been very different from what it is today.
The adoption procedure is lengthy and expensive. My parents took me home from the hospital the day after I was born, but they were on a waiting list for a baby girl throughout the previous eight years. The adoption was not finalized completely for almost two years after that. My parents were closely monitored and my house had to be perfectly baby proofed with no faults whatsoever as there were constantly social workers and childcare workers coming to check up on them. In the event that there was a problem, I would have been taken from my parents and placed into foster care until they either solved the problem or a new family hoped to adopt me. When I was younger and in elementary school, I asked my mom why I was adopted at least once every week. I was completely mesmerized by the idea of having a different set of parents that gave me to unrelated people to be raised. I thought it was the coolest thing ever to be adopted, and I think I was right. My mom would always tell me I was adopted because they could not afford to have a baby. I believed her, mainly
