The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one of the most recognizable organizations within the animal rights movement, due in part to their attention grabbing antics and controversial advertisements. While PETA has been successful in creating visual rhetoric that generally appeals to the audience’s cognitive reasoning and emotions they are often not successful in catalyzing actual change in behaviour.

PETA, though it does many things, has four main objectives. They focus on animal cruelty on factory farms, which are also known as confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and intensive livestock operations (ILOs). These farms are more worried about profits and high volumes of goods than they are about human health, safe food, the environment, fair treatment of animals, and the surrounding economy (Factory Farms). PETA also focuses on cruel treatment to animals in laboratories, in the fur trade, and in the entertainment industry (like Khartoum). They also work on projects helping birds, beavers, and abused backyard dogs, as some examples. To reach the public, PETA uses many tactics, including working “through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and direct action.” (PETA: Official Page). PETA tries to reach the public any way possible.

Animal Cruelty is a problem that many ignore. People are oblivious to these animals and the negligence their owners show. Animal cruelty is an underlying problem in today’s society, and the only way to counteract these problems, is for this generation to do something about it.

Animals are beaten and abused on a daily basis due to barbaric individuals. Whether it be from harmful intentions or pure negligence most cases go unreported. “Deliberate cruelty may involve beating, shooting, stabbing animals, or setting them on fire. Neglect is not giving a necessary food, water, shelter, or vet care” (Human Society). The lack of attention and care for these animals can often lead to severe, and sometimes irrevocable damage. The Animal Legal Defense Fund, ALDF for short, website tells of one story where neighbors of a farm complained to the local humane society, “that the Colliers were neglecting many animals on their farm, including dogs and horses. When they went to their property to investigate, they discovered dogs and horses in several states of neglect and starvation and seized them out of concern for their immediate health”(ALDF). Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.

Why would anyone abuse an animal? Animal abuse is rather common, you could be doing it even if you don’t think you are. There are many animals that deal with abuse or neglect, about 1,423 animals a year. That’s in the U.S. alone. Animals are living creatures, just like you, and they’re not cheap. Neglect is another version of abuse, and it can come in many forms. Many people enjoy companionship with their animals; however, according to the American Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), “every 60 seconds, another animal is abused.” Animals are often neglected in ways such as improper feeding, dog fighting, cockfighting, and being bred in puppy mills. In order to end animal abuse, people need to be enlightened about the multiple ways animals can be abused. Awareness of activities surrounding animal abuse will help decreases animal abuse. Education is of utmost importance in preventing animal abuse.

Over the centuries, animals have suffered from cruelty from humans. In the United States, animals are beaten, neglected, or forced to struggle for survival. Animals have been inflicted with pain from humans for reasons other than self-defense. They have been slaughtered for their food and fur for personal gain in profit. In a majority of cases they have even been abused for someone’s own personal amusement or out of rage filled impulses. In some cases animals are found and rescued. They are given the second chance in life to experience what life should be like compared to what they once had.

“They are sentimental beings who are clearly capable of experiencing pleasure pain and suffering. Animals do have emotions like every human does, equally sharing the same pain, happiness, and sadness feelings like people do. As a result animals should not have to go through painful experiences, since they can be referred to being the same as people. “The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) promotes appreciation for and humane treatment of animals, encourages enforcement of anticruelty laws, and works for the passage of legislation that strengthens existing animal protection laws” ("American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" ). Although there are many animal being abuse, there are also organizations to help animals get the protection they need. Many organizations like ASPCA, are trying to encourage anti-cruelty laws to be put into action.Not only do animals face getting treated unfairly, they are also being illegally hunted by criminals just to get some money off of them.

Animals are a big part of many people’s lives. They provide companionship; they provide daily assistance to those that have deficits and are having difficulty functioning in their daily life; they provide security and help keep a watchful eye on things, plus so much more. And yet, with all that animals do for us, there are those that are treated with such little regard, care, and cruelty. They are unable to speak for themselves and therefore, they need a voice to speak for them.

In our world today, there are countless numbers of homeless animals. Every year, millions of animals are abused. Of those, thousands don't make it. According to the UN, 200 species go extinct every day. In the US alone, more than 1 million animals are run over every day. These are just some the cruel realities that exist in our current state. It may be too late for some, but there is still time, still hope for others. We need to invest more in preventing animal cruelty before it’s too late. We need to speak for those who don't have a voice of their own.

Thousands of animals are being abused every single year through poison,guns,and blood sport.Plenty of animals including pets have horrible lives that include being shot and poisoned.But doing something to the animals is not the only way an animal can be abused.In some cases,pets are completely ignored and left outside with no food or water.Through animal abuse prevention laws,being aware of animals around you,and donating money towards preventing animal cruelty,animal abuse can be prevented.

Many companies, like McDonalds, lie about what actually goes on at their farms. “Free range” “Cruelty free” “Killed in a humane way” Those are just some the things that consumers are told and believe everyday. Saying thank you to the animal before munching on its flesh and bones doesn’t excuse what happens to them. The abuse and torture animals go through at factory farms isn’t fair and needs to be stopped immediately.

PETA is an American organization with headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia started in 1980 with the aim of protecting animal welfare. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. They also work strongly against abuse of domestic animals and stray animals. PETA believes that animals have rights and deserve to have their best interests taken into consideration, regardless of whether they are useful to humans. PETA brings to the attention that all animals are capable of suffering and go through pain just like human beings and their lives needs to be protected. PETA believes that all people should try to stop animal abuse whenever and wherever they can. Since 1980, PETA has campaigned to establish a global society in which humans consider the lives of animals and put an end to their suffering.
