The issues regarding animal rights have been highly debated and have sparked controversy in American politics for quite some time. Animal exploitation is happening among a majority of animal groups, including but not limited to farm animals, laboratory animals, companion animals and wildlife. The Animal Legal Defense Fund is sponsoring a petition to expand animal rights, and hopefully draft an “Animal Bill of Rights” in the future. An Animal Bill of Rights would help ensure all animals are guaranteed freedom, liberty, and the legal and social protection they have been denied for too long. A few of these injustices include, fur trapping and fur farming, animal captivity, and the mistreatment of farm and laboratory animals.
Annually, over one billion rabbits, foxes, minks, seals and many other animal types are captured from their habitats and taken to fur farms, and killed for their pelts. The number of federal laws protecting these animals and their fur is extremely low. Many of these federal laws are biased, like the Dog and Cat Fur Protection Act, and were created due to the alleged slaughtering of dogs and cats in China for their fur. Most animals captured for fur endure harsh conditions. Minks and foxes are kept in cramped outdoor cages, and allowed short periods of exercise. This is detrimental as foxes and especially minks are very active animals. They are also exposed to the harsh weather conditions year round. According to Last Chance for Animals, farmers “selectively
Her name was Snow White, beautiful eyes with a smile so bright, perked up ears that rose to the sky and beautiful black and white fur that made you feel safe when needed someone to talk to or even a hug. Since birth she was loyal, since birth she was faithful, but the reality of it all is that, not every owner knew how to take care of her. An animal is known to be more than a companion and our savior of the night, which is why we should understand the reality behind animal welfare, but in actuality, we don’t. But, they’re some habits to create a positive impact on animal welfare. From taking your pet to the veterinarian every six months to making sure your animal feels loved and appreciated by giving them attention, they are a lot more ways
In order to stop animal cruelty and the problems associated with it, we as a society need stronger animal rights laws.
Many people do not report cases of animal cruelty. Reports of animal cruelty are less common than crimes against people. This is because the cases do not go through state agencies. The animals that come to mind when someone mentions animal cruelty is often Dogs and cats. These animals do have a higher percent rate, with dogs at 70.1%, cats at 20.9% and all other animals at 24.1%. The percent’s come from cases that people report. If people were to fill all cases of animal cruelty, the rates would be much more different. A common form of negligence is people taking their animal to a place far from home to just leave them there. Animal control pick up these animals everyday and send them to shelter. For the most part the animals have a healthy portion of food and they have shelter from the environment. Most shelters are kill shelters. No-Kill shelters become less common to their counterpart. Animals not adopted within a certain period of time undergo euthanasia. This keeps room for more animals. No-kill shelters protect the animals and help rehabilitate them. The other 24.1% is the factory animals. The purpose of a factory animal's life is a food source. So the owners mistreat their animals because the animals purpose is to be a food source. It is almost as if they do not matter. They deserve animal rights just as much as the other animals do.
Animal testing has been one of the issues that people are fighting overtime because of its moral. Even though some results of tests are successful on people, many people are still fighting for the animal’s rights. They believe that animals should have their own rights to live a free life where they belong, just like their species. In scientists point of view, animals have been one of the main subjects to test on, but a lot of them are currently looking forward to use and develop alternatives for the cruel act of animal testing.
Many researches are finding that many of our fellow creatures are more like us than we had ever imagined. A percentage of people feel that concern should be brought upon how animals are treated. The Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Animal Bill of Rights is a petition to the United States Congress. The petition states the basic rights that all living beings other than humans should have and that our government should protect. It states the right of animals to be free from exploitation, cruelty, neglect, and abuse. The right of laboratory animals not to be used in cruel or unnecessary experiments. The right of animals to be in a healthy diet, protective shelter and sufficient medical care. The right of wildlife to a natural habitat, ecologically good enough to a normal existence and self-sustaining population. The right of farmed animals to an environment that fulfill their basic physical and psychological needs. The right of animals to have their interest represented in court and safeguarded by the law of the land. These are the six important keys in the act. No one can predict what actually happens to animals behind doors or even in nature, but it is fairly easy to say that not all animals are
The deeper I dig into animal abuse , the more I want to become a vegetarian. But it is not easy as it seems. The things that I have seen and read makes me sick to my stomach. To watch a hopeless cow, get whipped , is sickening. Watching baby Chicklets die in a big machine , brings tears to my eyes. Millions of animals every day die cruel deaths , and I no longer want to be an accomplice to the crimes. While it may be hard to retrain myself , I should and intend to just stop eating meat.
For the food and farming industry animals are a business of more than 9.7 billion dollars a year. These animals are livestock raised. New laws are protecting this animal and when companies don’t follow the laws they get criminal charges. The use of animals has also helped in the medical field with human life. This type of animals has also been regulated by the FDA. Rats and mice are the most used animals for lab testing. If we believe that animals should not have rights because they don´t have rationality, we also have to remember that baby human don´t have rationality either. For this reason, animals have
Why would anyone abuse an animal? Animal abuse is rather common, you could be doing it even if you don’t think you are. There are many animals that deal with abuse or neglect, about 1,423 animals a year. That’s in the U.S. alone. Animals are living creatures, just like you, and they’re not cheap. Neglect is another version of abuse, and it can come in many forms. Neglect could be starving them, not giving them medical care, not paying attention to them, etc, etc. Animals are just like humans, I mean, sure they can’t make their own meals, and they can’t drive a car, but that doesn’t mean they have fewer rights than you do. If an animal is abused or neglected the animal will be taken and the owner should be charged. If someone abuses an
Imagine one minute running freely on the vast green terrain surrounding you, then the next locked up in a cold, hard, cage. It sounds horrible, right? Who would want to be locked up with minimal area to stretch your legs, and have people staring at you constantly? I for one, would hate that. I imagine that most animals locked up would share the same feelings. I personally, am against animals being caged. They do not deserve that kind of lifestyle and should not have to live with it just because humans pay money to see it. Animals are suffering greatly from being locked away. When an animal is bought, traded or given to a zoo, the animals rights are stripped away from them.
Have you ever witnessed in your life a helpless animal crying is distress from their owner’s cruel actions inflicted upon it? Believe it or not various types of animals are found to be victims of numerous cases of severe Animal Abuse caused by humans worldwide. Animal Abuse is categorized in two different forms of abuse which includes: the intentional and physical trauma inflicted upon the animal such as depriving an animal from food and water, striking an animal out of unnecessary violence, hoarding, and inadequate living environments. The second form of Animal Abuse would be labeled as abuse being unintentional such as animal neglect. Many might dismiss Animal Abuse as a minor issue in our world, however as a fellow pet-owner, Federal laws should be enforced and established to protect the welfare of all animals throughout the globe because animals are not classified as property, and have the same rights as humans.
Imagine a white fluffy puppy with one blind eye, now imagine him being killed because no one adopted him. Imagine a small calf that was just born, killed for veal for a restaurant down the street. A furry black fox, killed and skinned for a small fur coat. A lion at the zoo, killed because he ran into the glass and cracked it, just because humans got scared. Humans will put them in fights. We kill them for food. We put wild animals on display. However they do so much more for mankind than we give them credit too, they are used in therapy, they rescue us and help in drugs exploitation. Do over 2,750 trillion deaths really justify the need for humans? Do people really stand above the moral laws and are able to do these horrible things to
Argument for Animal Rights The argument for animal rights assumes that animals posses their own lives and deserve to be assigned rights in order to protect their wellbeing. This view insists that animals are not merely goods utilised only to benefit mankind and they should be allowed to choose how they want to live their lives, free from the constraints of man. But if animals are given absolute rights, then surely they shouldn’t be allowed to kill each other, as this would be a violation of these rights.
For many years now the world has seen controversy over the rights of animals and if they think and feel like humans do. Many people see animals as mindless creatures or as food, while others think they have emotions and can feel pain. In other countries animal protection laws are in place that are strictly enforced and seem to work well with the system. In the United States however; some of the animal rights laws are considered to be useless and under-enforced (Animal Legal & Historical Center). More people today are beginning to see that animals should have rights and should be protected by laws and regulations (Animal Legal & Historical Center). Sadly there are many people residing in the United States who don’t take animal rights or protection laws seriously. These people abuse animals in many ways, including food industries that disobey the regulations set in place for the slaughter of animals used for consumption. Luckily for the animals there are people who fight for their rights and the enforcement of laws called animal rights activists.
Many companies, like McDonalds, lie about what actually goes on at their farms. “Free range” “Cruelty free” “Killed in a humane way” Those are just some the things that consumers are told and believe everyday. Saying thank you to the animal before munching on its flesh and bones doesn’t excuse what happens to them. The abuse and torture animals go through at factory farms isn’t fair and needs to be stopped immediately.
I was playing outside and all of a sudden, I hear this screech of a bird. I got very concerned, so I began walking up to the bird. It was laying fragile and still, like when a person is when they’re physically paralyzed and are unable to move. It must’ve flew into a window nearby. I couldn’t help but feel bad for it. No animal deserves to die. I then touched the bird making sure it was conscious. Before I knew it, the bird hopped up on it’s two legs. Cupping my hands, I tilted my water bottle, letting the water drop in my hands so the bird could get a drink. As soon as the bird got hydrated, it flew off into the woods. Even animals need a chance, but some people don’t care. I admire people like veterinarians who devote their lives to helping animals. Helping others can be a cure, not just for those who are in need, but for your own soul as well. Just then, I had a sudden realization. I want to help animals too. If we would all open our eyes and see just what some people do to innocent animals, maybe, just maybe, there will be a way to stop this. I was in high school when this all happened. It was like it was fate. I had to choose a career anyway, so why not be a vet. Yes! I want to be a vet.
