According to dosomething.org, “Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year.” Everyone can be a bully at one point and they may not even know that they are bullying someone. Which means that our actions can speak louder than our words, and sometimes when our filthy actions and crude words come together it’s not always a happy ending. Cyberbullying is bullying through electronic means such as personal websites, blogs, texting, and social media are just a few places you can find cyberbullying (Cyberbullying, 2006). Cyberbullying is a fast growing trend that experts believe to be more harmful than typical schoolyard bullying (Webster, 2005). It is believed to be worse than schoolyard bullying because there is no escape from cyberbullying. We can be contacted 24/7 via the Internet or our phones so we can be reached anytime and anyplace; so home is no longer a safe haven from the bullies (Webster, 2005).
3. The main forms of bullying include Cyber, Social, Physical and mental. These bullying methods can make people feel really sad and left out or unwanted. Cyber bullying includes posting something derogatory or negative about someone, directly messaging someone something mean and calling their names, spreading rumours about someone to try and hurt their image. Different forms of social bullying include mimicking someone negatively, spreading rumours or lying, playing nasty jokes to annoy or humiliate someone, encouraging others to socially exclude someone. Social bullying can be one of the worst and most depressing forms of bullying due to the fact that it can affect your reputation as a person so much that you might not be able to make new friends or even be included in anything due to the high amount of rumours that got spreaded about you. Physical bullying can include hitting, kicking, tripping, pushing and damaging property. Mental bullying is pretty much the same as social bullying due to the fact that it is mostly verbal and with actions instead of you actually being in physical pain like what physical bullying is.
Cyberbullying constitutes any action or word, which may be public or private, direct or indirect, intentional or unintentional, that can harm or offend an individual or a group through electronic means in any form – physical, emotional, and psychological.
There has been a constant struggle for those in academia to get any sort of clear definition of bullying due to the many complex aspects involved. In order to get a better understanding of what bullying is, it is important to give a clear definition of it. This definition includes three aspects of behavior that we can identify; an imbalance of power or strength in which the victim feels he or she cannot stop the behavior, repeated or occurring over time, and harmful or with the intent to harm (Polanin, Espelage, & Pigott, 2012). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Education (2014), bullying can be divided into two modes and four types by which adolescents can be bullied or bully others. The first mode is direct, where bullying is done in the presence of the victim. The second mode is indirect, where bullying is not directed towards the victim in the present moment. Following these two modes are the four different types of bullying which include physical, verbal, social, and cyber. Physical bullying occurs when an individual is physically harmed or their is damage done to their property. Examples include slapping, hitting, pinching, punching, kicking, unwelcome or sexual touching, or destroying or stealing personal belongings. Verbal
The act of bullying is a phenomenon that has been recognized for decades now, often scrutinized for whether it is a normal part of growing up or a threat toward children’s safety. A prevalent viewpoint is that bullying is “harmless” and “kids are just being kids,” which leads youth and adults to deny the serious nature of the problem. Bullying by definition is a subset of aggression that is characterized by a power imbalance in favor of perpetrators over victim’s intention to cause harm or distress and repetition of the behavior. While it may manifest in many different ways, bullying has recently been dichotomized into “traditional” versus “cyber” forms. The key distinguishing
Other types of bullying are verbal, physical and social. Verbal bullying involves destructive comments, name calling, and teasing. Bullying goes beyond being physical and encounter words in the mouth. According to statistics, girls seem to overpower boys when it comes to verbal abuse. They tend to show superiority and dominance over another. Verbal bullying can affect people emotionally. For examples, a group of cheerleaders spot the new girl eating lunch alone, so they walk over there. The new girl is thinking they are coming to eat lunch with her but they are not. The group of cheerleaders snatches her tray off the table and called her ugly. The new girl takes off running, crying in the bathroom and nobody even came to check on her.
Next, there is verbal bullying, in which the bully may call the victim names, hurl insults, tease, intimidate, make homophobic or racial remarks or verbally abuse the victim. This can usually start off harmless, but oftentimes escalates to levels which start effecting the victim. Social bullying, also known as covert bullying, is where the bully lie, spread rumors, play nasty jokes in order to embarrass and humiliate, mimic unkindly, encourage others to exclude, or damage the social acceptance of the bullying victim.
Before technology took over our society, bullying was limited to physical and verbal harm. Today, technology has allowed bullies to attack someone at any time and say as much as they wish. This allows for the victim to read and re-read his or her threats over and over again. When the threats become too harsh, the victim feels unsafe in public areas, such as school, and the victim misses out on schoolwork and activities. Although there are more serious problems that should be addressed at school, school officials should fight cyberbullying because dealing with cyberbullying issues will teach students to become better, stronger people in the future, the disturbing comments that are made online affect the students’ mental and emotional health, and when addressing this issue, both the bully and the victim could be helped.

First of all, bullying is as common as it is a word. Everyone has come across a bully at some point in their lives, but not everyone understands what bullying really is. Sometimes, it’s hard to read between the lines of what is bullying and what is not. Bullying is an action that causes harm or has an intent to cause harm (Powell) or “an intentional repeated aggressive behavior, which involves an imbalance of power between the victim and bully” (Iannotti and Wang). Researchers Jin Wang and Ronald J. Iannotti have also defined bullying into four groups: physical bullying, verbal bullying, relational/indirect bullying, and cyberbullying. Physical bullying is bullying that involves physical actions that cause harm such as shoving, punching, kicking, and even stealing. Verbal bullying, like its name, involves verbal
