The idea of cheating has gained a lot of popularity in the media. Pro athletes caught using illicit drugs to gain a competitive advantage are condemned and often have the awards they've been given revoked. Even professional e-sport players have been caught using drugs such as adderall to gain a professional advantage. The competitive sports scene is not the only place where people use any means necessary to gain an edge. "Study drugs" are also often used in academia. What justification could there be for these people to be morally OK with their actions? Is cheating ever OK?
What does it mean to cheat? The definition of cheating is to act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination. This is a very broad definition that that could encompass a variety of actions. In the Olympics some teams have access to superior resources that other less fortunate teams don't have access to. Having state of the art equipment certainly gives an advantage, but is this an unfair advantage? Who decides what is unfair and what isn't? Several pro-athletes have been caught using drugs to give themselves a competitive advantage. Caffeine is a drug that offers several advantages over someone who doesn't use it. Does that give them an unfair advantage to someone who can't consume caffeine for religious reasons? Where is the line drawn for people using the best methods they can to improve themselves? There is certainly a grey area for what is and isn't considered cheating in terms of bettering yourself.
However, there are methods of gaining a competitive edge that go beyond just bettering yourself that are unarguably unfair. In the e-sports community using "hacks" to cheat offer an advantage that no one who uses any method to better themselves as player can compete with. Using a method that prevents other combatants from even having a hope of winning is certainly unethical. Using methods to better yourself at a faster rate is one thing, but using a method of cheating that gives you an edge over someone who has trained for countless hours more than you is another. Another example of clearly unethical cheating would be using methods that cripple your opponent. Essentially removing someone
Using drugs to increase performance is without doubt cheating when it comes to sports, but in professional sports money will always be a reason for athletes to use it. For a professional athlete it can be the difference between being the best and being part of the results list. With all the money involved in sports today there is a calculated risk by using it that many people are willing to take.
Many people argue that competitive sports raise numerous amounts of pressure on the youth making them distracted from things such as their education and because it can cause severe injuries, but some people argue that youth should play competitive sports because it teaches major life lessons that can help with many different aspects of their future such as college, getting a job, and many more. Playing competitive sports also improves your physical strength, another physical aspect of playing competitive sports is decreasing your chance of being obese or having disease. If you don't prefer to play competitive sports there are alternative options such as biking or walking to school. In an HT Health article “Sports Seen As Key Weapon in Fighting Teen Obesity” it says that in a study with 1,700 kids, ten percent walked or biked to school 3 ½ days a week,, in the study they found that biking or walking to school lowered the risk of being obese by 33%. I argue that kids should play competitive sports because of the important life skills taught through these sports and the physical benefit of playing sports. In this paper I will explain how communication, time management, and lowering the risk of being obese; supports my claim, “Kids should play competitive sports”
Using steroids while playing a sport is counted as cheating. College athletes should be drug tested for using steroids. The stronger the player the more abilities they have over others, causing people to see it as cheating. Let’s take a look at past athletes, that have used steroids, starting with Ben Johnson and Mark McGwire:“...Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for the drug and was stripped of his gold medal and world record in the 100 meter” (Ritter 2). According to Ritter, if an athlete is on steroids while playing a
Gambling, a hobby to some and an addiction to others is the main focus of Christie V. NCAA. The case, brought forth by New Jersey, argues for sports betting to be allowed in order to save the otherwise decaying casino industry New Jersey is famous for.Now what exactly could be prohibiting such an act?
Sport is a global phenomenon, it is a common between all the nations of the world there is not one culture that has not engaged in a way or another in some type of sporting activity; such activities are not only often physically challenging and mentally stimulating – they also provide a sense of belonging and personal meaning to people’s lives. In American culture like many other cultures worldwide winning is highly prized and cherished by fame and money from audiences and sponsors.
In recent years we as a country have seen a huge spike in instances where sports and politics collide. Two examples would include the “Anthem protests” and the “Hands up don’t shoot” entrance into the stadium by the National Football League’s St. Louis Rams. If you take a deeper look back into the history of the United States you see many more examples of different varieties throughout every sport. Most notably one of the greatest boxers of all time, Mohammed Ali, refusing to be drafted to a war he disagreed with and Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball.
Those with a particularly insensitive moral compass may feel comfortable calling it gaining competitive edge. Traditionalists believe that an athletic competition should respect those who win because of talent, hard work and sweat; they call it cheating. Sports terminology refers to it as doping, with many medical experts labeling it as drug abuse in athletes. Here are two of the biggest doping scandals in sports history.
The severity of drug abuse should not be taken lightly. The use of performance enhancing drugs in competitive sports should definitely be illegal. Doping is using something that is above
Have you ever thought of using performance enhancing drugs ( PEDS) or thought of what it would do for your sports career ?Well if I were you ,would not take them at all, ask anyone, even ask Palmerio he was a big steroid user in the MLB. His career crashed after getting tested for positive of using steroids in 2005. However, when Palmerio got out of baseball for use of PEDs he told everyone in the world “ Never use PEDs ,Period’’. Palmerio learned from his mistake and that he should never take steroids again in his lifetime. PEDS have influenced baseball so much of the time that all of the players are getting out of the sports now because they have been tested for steroids. Every year of baseball season the PEDs use gets worse, like on May 15 2018 hall of fame Robinson Cano was tested positive for doping. He is suspended for 80 games because of using tham. Many people these days are using PEDs and getting suspended from playing in games. My main opinion is that I think people should not use PEDS in the use.
We live in a world where winning is seemingly everything. Competition rules our lives from the sports we play to the test scores we earn. Everyday, we are pushed to be the best and winning is seen as the way to prove we are the best. Winning the championship game, receiving a one-hundred percent on a test, or getting into a prestigious college are just some examples of these manifestations of success. While competition does breed innovation and growth, it can sometimes go too far. In regards to cycling, it can push competitors to become involved in illegal and immoral actions such as taking performance enhancing drugs in order to win. However, taking performance enhancing drugs is banned for a reason; sports should be about showcasing natural
I think that doping is a bad way to enhance one’s abilities in athletics because it is basically cheating. Unless that you are proven to have a serious medical condition and that you have to take a steroid for that reason only, not to compete, then it is fine to use. David Millar learned the hard way when he was doping in cyclist races. He didn’t care whether people thought he doped or not because all he wanted was to win in professional races. In order to get successive results, he doped, but his consequences were dire because the steroids suppressed his immune system making his body vulnerable to infections. On top of that, the amount of stress on his body was massive resulting with bronchitis after his second place victory. I think he learned
The athletes who use drugs are cheating. They disobey the law and escape the punishment due to the advanced technology which makes it harder to detect the drugs. So, more and more athletes choose to improve their performance by this way. Furthermore, athletes show no respect to themselves and spectators if they take in drugs before the competition. Maybe they do not believe that they have the ability to achieve good results after hard training or can not bear the pressure of failure due to less training. What the spectators want to see is the real ability of the athletes though they also want to watch excellent competitions. In addition, the athletes who use drugs will never experience the joy and fun during the competitions and training. For the athletes who want to use drugs in games, what they are thinking about is only the medals, awards and money, they never really think of the significance of sports so they cannot enjoy the process of the competitions and training.
Many people believe that drug use in professional athletics is not a serious problem, however it is more widespread and serious than people think. In professional athletics the use of drugs is looked upon as somewhat of a serious problem, but is also very discrete and low key. Every once in a while one might see a prominent figure in a certain sport being reprimanded for the use of some outlawed drug, however this is just one of the many who happened to get caught. Athletes today seem to find no moral problem with using performance-enhancing drugs, or in other words cheating. Also many of them feel that because they are "stars" there should be no repercussions for their illegal activity.
Do you have a passion, something you love to do more than anything? Imagine people trying to stop you from doing what you love because they think it’s not useful or a waste. Some people say competitive sports cost too much and they are way too dangerous for young kids to participate in. However, for many youth, competitive sports play a positive role. When kids play competitive sports, they are happier and they learn how to be healthy. Also, they learn life lessons that they will need for the future.
We all love to watch professional sports whether it be up front and live, on the television, our on our phones. The amazing catch or throw that they make or the game winning buzzer beater. Professional athletes have such a huge impact on their cities and the surrounding areas. So many kids look up to these people and aspire to be them when they get older. However, behind the scenes these pros are just as everyday people as any of us are. They have families that they are trying to provide for and share memories with just like any other citizen. Even more, these professionals make the same mistakes that others do as well. One specific mistake is the use of illegal drugs. Since the 1960’s athletes have been turning to drugs to better enhance their performance and outshine the others. Should this be considered cheating or are these people using their resources for the better? Do these athletes know that they could be doing to their health and their body?
