Did you remember those days when you were so excited to hear there was a circus stopping by your town? Did you impatiently wait for the animals to come up in circus and to amaze you with those performances? If yes was your answer, you were definitely not alone. Imagine you are stolen from your family at a young age, forced. Forced to perform routines, and you can not understand why, when you mess up or refuse to perform, you are punished with lacerations or starvation. No one responsible for you cares about your health and will do whatever they can to put as little effort and resources into you. This is the life for many animals forced to participate in circuses. Circus animals, such as elephants, big cats, camels, or bears, live in conditions no human would want to experience. Animals that try to escape their enclosures don't only get shocked or cut by the wire fences but are even sometimes shot to death. That´s ashaming. If the animals are so important to the zoos and circuses then why treat them the way they do? These animals don't even get the proper vet care, and with all the injuries they get a day, they need it. Animals should be getting a checkup at the least, every two months and especially circus animals, because of how active they are. Animals in zoos and circuses are never taught to survive in the wild. Animals are used to benefit people in various ways such as research studies and a source of food, but the most unjustifiable reasoning for animal cruelty is entertainment. The most known example of animal fighting is dog-fighting, but cock-fighting and hog-dog fighting are also examples of the cruel activities animals are involuntarily opted into. Yet the question many are unable to answer is why? These methods of entertainment offer temporary satistatisfaction, but at the cost of endless cruelty and neglect for the animals who lack the option to withdraw from the events.

In the article “PETA urges L.A. to ban all wild animals from circus performances”, Alexia Fernandez highlights the speed with which animal activists go in order to free wild animals from being used in circuses. According to the spokesman for the Ringling Bros, after L.A. “banned circuses from using bullhooks to manage elephants” in 2014, PETA activists demanded that circuses remove wild animals from their performances and Barnum & Bailey Circus begged to differ by arguing that animals in their facilities are taken good care of and are not mistreated (Fernandez, 2016). In conclusion, both sides of the arguments believe that neither is misinformed.

As a child, many people would often go to the zoo or to the circus and see animals in real life. In circuses, animals would often perform tricks and stunts, dazzling the audience. In the zoo, people would often see animals in their native habitat, or what looks like it. Children were mainly amazed with the animals and were always exited to go see the animals. As the years go by, they start to realize that some of the animals are suffering and are being mistreated, especially in circuses. They see that the animals in zoos are depressed and lonely and the animals in the circuses are chained up. What is worse is that animals in laboratories are often treated very poorly; more poorly than what Americans treat prisoners and refugees. There have been many debates on whether animals should be held in captivity. Some groups believe that animals should not be held in captivity because they have the same capacities as humans. They believe that animals can feel emotion and have a sense of morality. Animals in captivity are deprived of their natural habitat and their instincts. Animals raised in captivity tend to rely more on humans compared to animals raised in the wild. They also believe zookeepers and trainers are putting themselves at risk when taking care of the animals. There have been many incidents including the death of trainers by animals, one highlighted by the movie “Blackfish” by director Gabriela Cowperthwaite. There are others who believe that putting animals in captivity is beneficial for not only the animal, but for humans as well. Humans get more jobs if more animals are put into captivity because there is an increase in the amount of people needed. Another benefit of keeping animals in captivity is that it could help save a species who is endangered and close to going extinct. Another benefit is that it helps increase the amount of food available because some animals are raised for food. Putting animals in captivity wrong unless they are being used for the animal’s benefits.

Think about how we will look back on our cruel forms of entertainment in the future. Will we be proud of the way we treated these great animals, with abuse as neglect? Today we turn our heads away from reality and what happens behind the scenes of animal entertainment. However, we can’t turn our heads forever. Around the world, there is so much more to animal entertainment than what meets the eye. These animals have been torn away from their beautiful, natural homes and brought to a prison of concrete. In these prisons, they are beaten, starved and tortured all for our money and entertainment. These animals lives should not be taken from them for us. Our money and happiness should not be worth these animal’s lives. Circus, theme park and zoo animals all suffer from aggression towards trainers, mental disabilities and physical injuries. These animals should not have to suffer any longer.

Animal entertainment has been used as pastimes and for religious purposes for many generations. Most people have memories of themselves as a child at zoos, circuses, aquatic parks, and even watching a T.V. commercial with an animal involved. What people don’t realize is that they aren’t being taught about the natural environment of the animals. In contrast, they are being exposed to the results of torture the animals have had to endure. In order for animals to perform they are abused, mistreated, and malnourished. If people were put into the same environments, forced out of their comfort zone, and abused like these animals are society would have a fit. So why is it different with animals? They didn’t choose to be put in that position. Animals used in entertainment is wrong, and they should not have to endure these horrible and barbaric treatments.

Imagine being drugged, taken to an unknown place, and being tortured to do actions foreign to your natural behaviour, but knowing it would be much worse if you disobey. That is the life of animals used for entertainment every day. Animals have been used as a means for entertainment for centuries now, not treated with the respect they deserve. The utilization of animals for entertainment may help attract people to learning more about a certain animal, however, manipulating animals for entertainment violates the animal’s rights and freedoms, and, more often than not, animals utilized for entertainment live in detrimental environments, despite people’s endeavors to end it.

Animals in captivity are being forced to perform for human entertainment, but have to go through different forms of mistreatment to succeed in their performances. When it comes to billion dollar companies, such as, SeaWorld Entertainment and Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus, abuse their animals at a very young age in return of profit from admission ticket sales. The Animal Welfare Act regulates housing, exhibiting, care, licensing, and care for animals in captivity. Although, it only provides minimal standards of the care for these animals. This act does not prohibit the use of different instruments like a bullhook, electric pods, and other devices that are commonly used in the treatment of the elephants in the Ringling

Although the issues regarding circus cruelty have gained much-needed attention in recent years, circus animals still suffer from lives of confinement, social deprivation and violent methods of training.

There are many types of animals used for entertainment such as circuses, dog fighting, zoos, and rodeos. All of these types of entertainment are not natural for these animals which is a form of abuse. Often times they are wild animals that don’t belong in cages and are not able to do things that are in their instinct to do. This is especially true about zoos and circuses. Animals are not able to roam free and instead kept in small cages. Even in optimal settings experts say that it is difficult to provide for the needs of wild animals.(Lemonick) Children should learn to respect animals and not see them as entertainment. People should only support animal free circuses and raise awareness how animals are abused for entertainment.

The life of a circus animal is hard and demanding. It is not an acceptable way of life for an animal. Circuses would quickly lose their appeal if the public were more aware of their mistreatments of these animals. Many circuses do not have much money and as a result the animals suffer from inadequate care. These animals spend most of their time in small cages used for transportation. The Animal Welfare Act provides cage requirements, but many circuses fail to follow this law. Animals have been a main focus in circus performances around the world for many centuries; however, in recent history, there have been far more regulations put on the use of these creatures, stemming mainly from how they are treated by both their trainers and the circus as a whole. Whether it be on the federal or local and state-level, there has been a definite increase in the questionable legality of America’s circus industry due to the neglect and abuse of the participating animals, courts’ decisions highlighting the true importance of the issue. With nearly millions of animals dying each year from being captive, or endangered species being hunted down and killed, we need to discover a new way of displaying that our world is full of beautiful animals and wildlife. Wild animals are suffering both physically and mentally from the lack of freedom that confinement imposes. These harmful environments are preventing animals from having the opportunity to live in, and be exposed to their natural habitats. Keeping animals imprisoned in cages and small enclosures just for the sake of human observation causes stress and frustration, which is risking animals overall health and well being. These morally unacceptable and cruel actions of retaining wild animals in captivity is certainly wrong.
