he citizens of the richest countries in the world feel the least guilt about their impact on climate change despite it being the greatest (Monbiot). Yet by ignoring it, not only are they harming the world, but people of places that are more affected by the current climate change. Clearly, people need to care about one another before they can care about climate change.
Sociologists Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann state that “from the moment of birth, man’s [...] development… [is] subjected to continuing socially determined interference” (Berger and Luckmann 48). From the very start, a person’s very being is affected by the society they were born in, and this only continues throughout their life. Thus, in order to change the attitude of people in a society, one must somehow change the society. This is no small task, but as theorized in Herland, the “way to make the best kind of people” is with education (Gilman 51). A current study from Harvard found that out of 10,000 middle and high school students surveyed, only 22% thought caring for others was most important to them, with most students (and their parents) instead focusing on achievement (Hough). This attitude just feeds into competitive apathy later in life, where men and women strive to only better themselves, regardless of the cost to others or the environment.
