What is courage? Courage to me is someone who is brave and has the strength needed to face their fears. Courage is Harriet Tubman bringing runaway slaves to the North. Courage is Rosa Parks not giving up her seat to a white man, even though the law said so. Courage is the people who helped save the lives of those stuck in the twin towers on September 11th. Courage is shown in the book Hatchet by a character named Brian. Brian is just a young boy who is on his way to his dad’s house for the summer. Everything was going good until his pilot has a heart attack. The plane had been left flying thousands of miles above ground in the hands of Brian. Brian needs to find a way to land the plane without ending his life. Brian shows courage as he tries to land the plane. He stays calm while searching for a lake to land in because he knows landing in trees would kill him during impact. Brian finds a lake and is able to land the plane safely, with minor injuries. Brian was able to overcome his fears while he landed the plane. This shows courage in Brian. Rosa Parks is able to ovecome her fears by not giving up her seat on the bus. Rosa Parks also shows courage while on the bus. Rosa knew that she was supposed to let the white man sit in her spot, but she refused because the law was unfair. Rosa stood up for her rights. The consiquinces of this were not good but Rosa made a huge impact and started to make a change for black’s. Rosa Parks was a very couragous person who was very brave in her actions. Brian shows courage as he had to start a fire. After multiple tries of not finding the right wood Brian learned how to make fire by him getting mad and throwing his hatchet. It hit a rock and created a spark. When he knew he could use this rock, he used birch bark to start a fire. He rubbed the hatchet with the rock to start sparks. He used granite rock and birch bark fibres to start a small fire. In the end Brian did not give up and he was brave enough to keep on trying. This another way Brian showed courage. Brian showed courage he had to get his hatchet that he dropped in the bottom of the lake. Because of his courage he got the hatchet. If he had not gotten the hatchet he probably would not have survived. This is how
We all have opportunities to display courage in our life, but if we actually do is our decision. Courage is being able to do what is right even if it can be hard. In the book Speak by Laurie Halle Anderson I found three different examples of courage. In this book Melinda Sordino, David Petrakis and Melinda, again all show courage.
He uses the shelter to protect him from the rain and some animals. After he builds the shelter, Brian uses his hatchet to make spears and arrows. He takes branches and sharpens the tip of them to make arrows and spears. "He had worked on the fish spear until it had become more then just a tool. He shoots the arrows at birds and throws the spears at fish. "I know about fire; I know I need fire." Brian says this the second night he's there. Brian needs a fire because he needs it for heat, to cook food and to keep animals away. Brian makes the fire with his hatchet and a rock. First, he figures out that he needs some paper so he takes his 20-dollar bill and tries to burn it. Unfortunately, the bill just burns right out and leaves him with no fire. After that, he takes his hatchet and cuts small pieces of bark. Then he piles them up under twigs. Then he takes his hatchet and hits a rock with a great blow and sparks catch the bark on fire. He hits another blow and the sparks catch the twigs on fire. Therefore, he has a fire. This process shows that whatever Brian sets his mind to he can do it. About two months later Brian went to the bottom of the lake to see if there was anything useful in the plane. He brought up a survival package. There were many useful things in there like bandages and matches. Couple months later, just before winter was going to hit a man shows up in a plane. The guy in the plane was the man Brian had talked
Traveling to him, the pilot died for a heart attack and the plane crashed down in the Canadian wilderness. This was the start of event and this was how Brian learned to live through a wilderness for fifty-four days. At first, Brian did not know what to do. He just screamed and panicked. I liked the screaming part. It expressed a person’s mentality well. In the wilderness, he learns the way to survive. He ate every food that he could catch like berries, fish, birds, rabbits and eggs. Also he overcame some threats by a bear, a wolf, a skunk, a porcupine and made an arrow, bow, a spear. In other words, he mastered to survive.
Courage in simple words means an act of bravery. Everyone has their own definition, for some the meaning is much more complicated for others it's very simple. When I think of someone who is courageous I think of my Dad and military individuals people who have fought for their country. People like doctors and scientists people who don't think about themselves when faced with a choice to give up. My definition of courage is a person that has the strength needed to do the unthinkable. Certainly, that is not just it. Courage takes a bigger picture of an act of bravery. When one is courageous enough to do what is right, he earned the utmost respect of human spirit. While some may see being courageous has to be doing a big thing, it boils down to a thing as small as saying “Sorry, I was
Courage is when someone does something for non-selfish reasons, no matter how frightening it may be. It’s not just physical bravery that can be considered courage, just speaking out can be just as powerful. A person is courageous when they make decisions that help positively affect another person's life. It means you stick up for what's right no matter the consequences that follow. People can express courage through following their hearts, standing up for what’s right, and expanding their horizons.
First, He doesn’t afraid of failing. He finds some choke berries which causes him to vomit and has diarrhea because he has too much of them. However he does not feel sad and he started to work on finding other types of food right away. “…if there was one kind of berry there should be other kinds. Sweeter kinds.” (Hatchet, P.67) This shows that Brian does not afraid of failing because he believes that there are always better things. Brian wants to catch some fish also, but the spear does not work. “He’d spent hours and hours on it, and now it didn’t work.” This shows that the spear does not seems to work at all. However he does not say anything negatively and starts to improve the spear right away. Brian also fails a lot of times before he get a fire going. “Brian found it was a long way from spark to fire. “This shows that Brian cannot get a fire going. Brian does not feel disappointed and start to experiment on other
When Brian awoke he was really thirsty. He went to the lake and drank a lot of water from there. There was another problem, he found himself really hungry too. He did not know what to eat. He didn't want to think about another thing too. How far he went off his original destination course. They might not find him for along time and also he needed shelter. He could not make a fire. The only tool he had was a hatchet.
One theme of the story is having courage. Even in the hardest of time with a little courage, Bud overcomes the toughest of obstacles. This ten year old exemplified a strong backbone when he embarked on a 120-mile journey to Grand Rapids Michigan alone with no money or no food. If that does not show courage, I don’t know what does.
This shows courage because he stands up for both his father and his sister even thinking he was going to get hurt he still did it because nothing can break him and his family
The Survivor “The instant his mother thumped him down and told him to be still, he vanished.” (6) As a kid, Louie Zamperini wasn’t as normal as other kids. He had anger issues, never listened, and never care for anyone but him. He would get bullied, but still be brave enough to fight for himself, and would never let anyone or anything put him down. Pete, his brother taught him how to run and when he got older, he was one of the fastest runners in the world.
A hatchet his mother gave and his torn windbreaker is all he have. At first he was full with an anger-full with despair and he even cried a lot. However, Brian realizes that there's no time for those anger and despair. Leaning on his hatchet, Brian gradually adapts into the wilderness. Brian makes a shelter under the rock by the L-shaped lake he crashed.

What is courage? Courage has many meanings, such as standing up for what’s right, hope, faithfulness, being bold, fearlessness, brave, and being determined. People in the past have been courageous. An important aspect of courage is standing up for what’s right.
First of all Rosa Parks is more patient than the average person. Instead of getting up whenever the bus driver told her to she remained seated to prove a point. Not only that but she did not get mad whenever she was told to move. Last but not least she did not fight back whenever the cops can to arrest her.
One criterion for courage is the fact that it must involve risk. Assume that a Sea Bear, who loves to eat sponge cake, thinks SpongeBob Squarepants looks just like yellow cake and has kidnapped SpongeBob’s pet snail Gary! Unarmed, SpongeBob, the little yellow sponge of the sea, treks up a sea hill to the Bear’s cave. The Sea Bear greets SpongeBob with a loud ROAR. Unmoving with fright, he blinks three times and starts…tickling the bear. Remarkably, his tickle tactic is successful, and the bear rolls on the floor laughing. Seizing the moment, SpongeBob grabs Gary and runs away. In this scenario, SpongeBob is courageous, because he acts even though there is a significant chance the bear will eat SpongeBob. However, if Gary slithered out to the porch and SpongeBob took him back inside, it is not courageous since it does not involve risk.
