Distracted driving is an issue that causes so many deaths each year. Looking at your phone, somewhere else in the car, or even doing your makeup can be the last thing you do before killing yourself and others. The state of Florida is urging drivers not to drive distracted through public service announcements and laws related to distracted driving. Public service announcements (PSA) are made to warn drivers of the consequences of driving while distracted. However, the decision is up to the driver to listen to the PSA and save not only their life but the lives of others around them each day. Some argue that Florida’s PSA’s and laws are not enough to prevent distracted driving. They argue that the laws are not strict enough saying “Currently, …show more content…

Many people argue the state of Florida needs to be stricter on their laws regarding distracted driving, but its drivers who need to be more strict about how and where it is appropriate to use their phone. Just like it is not possible for someone to make decisions for others, the state of Florida cannot make decisions for people not to drive while distracted. Drivers make the decision on their …show more content…
Florida uses public service announcements to urge drivers not to drive while distracted. Along with public service announcements, Florida has made new laws regarding distracted driving and consequences that will be taken if drivers are caught while texting, calling, or making an email on their phone while driving. Stated in the HB 33 bill, revised in February of 2018, officers can “stop motor vehicles and issue citations to persons who are texting while driving.” When this law is put into action we will be able to see the yearly results beginning in February of 2019. The results will include the number of people stopped for operating a wireless device manually, their race and ethnicity statewide, proving that Florida is taking action to fight against distracted
Distracted driving in America is not a trivial issue in today's society. On average, eight people are killed and one thousand one hundred sixty one people are injured due to accidents involving distracted drivers, particularly due to texting. Distracted driving is a huge issue in our society. The risks are great and lead to unfathomable results. Distracted driving has also taken such a big toll on our Nation, that laws have been put in place in hopes of preventing distracted driving.
Every year, about four hundred twenty-one thousand people are injured in a car crash involving distracted driving. In the United States alone, nine people are killed and over one thousand are injured every day in a car accident involving a distracted driver. Distracted driving is responsible for the majority of accidents that take place in the state of California. The rapidly increasing rate of fatality occurring in California proves distracted driving has become a fatal epidemic. Alike a disease that has the ability to wipe out an entire population, distracted driving has proven to be equally as devastating. Many people may argue that the laws currently in place in California is all that can be done to eliminate or minimize the trauma that results from the issue. Although, the thousands of people who have lost their loved ones to car accidents involving a distracted driver would have to disagree. The state of California certainly has not done enough to prevent distracted driving nor enforce punishment upon those responsible.
Distracted driving is obviously a big deal but some people don’t seem to think so. They see all the accidents that happen because of distracted driving but they continue to do it because they think “ oh it’ll never happen to me “ or “it doesn’t happen to anyone i know so why would it happen to me” well it can happen to anyone at anytime. While you may have your phone out because of an emergency going on, all distractions, including make up,food, and phones should be put up while driving and if there are passengers in the car they need to be quiet so that the driver can focus. If the driver has out a distraction while driving, they're going to try to pay attention to the road and the distraction, in other words they try to multitask. 31% of U.S drivers ages 18-64 admitted to sending or reading a text while driving , in 2012 3,328 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver. When you’re driving, be considerate.Put down your phone while you’re driving, if you know it’s not safe then why do it.Think about other drivers on the road, by texting and driving you’re not only putting yourself at risk you’re putting others lives at risk too. We know that Florida ranks second only to Louisiana for distracted driving. Almost 50,000 car accidents were credited to distracted driving last year. Approximately 37% of the drivers say they text and drive. Law enforcement officials should be more aware of what people behind the wheel are doing. People ought to have consequences for their actions. If using an electronic device while driving, receiving a ticket, in addition to having your license suspended for 30 days would make one think before attempting to operate a motor vehicle. The second time one is pulled over for using an electronic device while operating a motor vehicle the consequence should be severer, for instance losing a driver’s license for at least a year. According to Florida law, police are forbidden from stopping drivers specifically for cell phone use since texting while driving is not a primary offense. This is completely unacceptable, however, if the police commenced pulling people over for being distracted whilst driving there
Many people have lost their lives on the road and caused other’s deaths because they were distracted with doing something while driving. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in distraction-related crashes (“Statistics on Texting & Cell Phone Use While Driving” n.d.). Distractions while driving that result in these accidents include texting/making a call or becoming intoxicated and having high blood alcohol concentration. Many laws have been brought forth to help regulate the amount of people drinking while driving and using a cell phone while driving. Not only do people put their own lives in danger, they are also putting other’s lives in danger. People who take part in these distractions are not being responsible when making these rash decisions while driving and creating a hazardous environment for those around them.
Distracted driving poses an immense problem across the United States, and the issue only seems to continue growing. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “In 2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed” in cases involving distracted driving, and of those killed, “teens were the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of fatal crashes” (“Distracted Driving”, n.d.). These terrifying statistics cannot be ignored. Distracted driving is a national epidemic, and unless society addresses the problem properly and efficiently, the risky driving behavior will continue to plague our streets, endangering peoples’ lives and leading to more fatalities.
Though, four years prior, the Florida Department of Transportation had addressed distracted driving as one of its pressing concerns. This leads many to question the FDOT’s actual concerns of the matter. The law is a secondary law, meaning that for the violation to even apply, a driver must be pulled over for a separate traffic infraction. With the amount of deaths caused by distracted driving every year, and a survey in 2010 that showed sixty-four percent of the surveyees designating distracted driving as the most serious hazard on the road, many question who the law truly benefits, the people, or the state? If the state of Florida has truly cared about the barring of distracted driving, why hasn’t it joined other states such as Nevada, California, Connecticut, and more, who have all banned texting and
According to Ashley Gaddis from Counterpoint, “From 1999 to 2008, nearly fifty-two thousand people were killed in car crashes caused by distracted drivers” (n.pag.). Distracted driving started when technology became mobile and handheld. Many people have died and gotten injured from people not paying attention to the road. This problem has been growing as technology advances. Distracted driving is a big problem and there needs to be stronger penalties and laws in place to deter people from distracted driving.

Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of whether or not distracted driving is violence. Where some are convinced that they are, other maintain that they are not. The state of Colorado is NOT doing enough to prevent distracted driving, especially among tech-savvy millennials who ignore safety precautions set by the government in order to reduce the amount of accidents each year from careless drivers. Despite road signs and an increased cost on distracted driving tickets - it is still technically legal to text and drive in the state of Colorado. In July of 2017, the government decided that using handheld devices while driving is considered safe unless the driver is being careless or reckless. What government officials refuse to acknowledge is that it takes a fraction of a second to permanently ruin your life or someone else’s. Studies have shown that distracted driving delays the body's ability to reach to urgent situations by an average of 6 seconds. Comparatively, the timing of these reactions are very similar to those results of people who consume alcohol/drugs prior to getting in the car and driving. As for the consequences, a ticket is $300 but the guilt lasts a lifetime and those who drive recklessly and take the life of another person never get over their foolish decision to prioritize a phone over their own safety. It’s important to educate the youth and future generations of the dangers distracted driving can lead to - as well as explain the effects if they are not careful.
Distracted driving is a huge issue that in 2013 took the lives of 3,154 Americans, according to distraction.gov. As an up incoming driver I don’t believe Florida does enough to prevent distracted driving. Cell phones are becoming a bigger part of a life as we know it, and out of all the states that have distracted driving laws, Florida’s is the most lenient. Most people don’t care about distracted driving, they don’t realize how big of a deal it is. I didn’t, I didn’t really think anything of it, up until I watched a video called Red Asphalt V. It is an extremely graphic video about teenage driving. As I watched it I couldn’t help but think ‘what if that happened to someone Love?’ It’s a very scary thought, losing someone that you love like
Daily, thousands of accidents are occurring around the world due to distracted drivers. Scientifically proven, distracted driving is almost, if not worse, equivalent to drunk driving. Drunk driving is illegal therefore the use of cellphones while driving should also be illegal and not permitted. There are far too many innocent deaths caused from irresponsible drivers that are selfish to others on the road. Every driver has the opportunity to make their own decision, life, or simple yet life changing, a text. Virginia recently enforced the law of cell phones not being permitted while driving; many have not realized this enforcement. Normally, police officers will not pull someone
Advancing technology in wireless communications is presenting a growing concern for distracted driving due to using cell phones and other electronic devices while driving. Although distracted driving accidents and fatalities have risen in the last decade, placing a ban on the use of a cell phone or other electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle as some states have will not resolve the issue. In fact a ban on cell phones and driving may very well increase the accident and fatality rate because drivers are now more involved with concealing their illegal behaviors. More citizen participation and drivers safety management should be more carefully considered in a transpiring situation such as this. More Americans should be
