It is no secret that exercise is tremendously good for our health, in fact is often persisted upon by avid gym goers, athletes, and physicians to persuade us to engage in, and increase the level of physical exercise in our lives. Many people often associate exercise with purely physical attributes; placing emphasis on improving body shape, and overall look. Although exercise has been promoted this way, physical beauty to say the least is a much more undermining factor when compared to the meritorious health benefits that are attained with both increased exercise and physical activity. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. Physical activity includes exercise as well as other activities which involve bodily movement and are done as part of playing, working, active transportation, house chores and recreational activities (World Health Organization, 2015).
Encompassed within the realm of physical activity, exercise serves an important function in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and can be broken down into two categories; aerobic exercise, and anaerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise which varies from light to moderate intensity is exercise that is performed for an extended period, and includes activities such as jogging, walking, cycling, heavy household work etc. Whereas, anaerobic exercise is exercise that is engaged in at high intensity in short durations of time usually lasting less than five minutes.
Examples of anaerobic exercise includes weight training, and intense cardio. (Straub, 2017)
In a society where the leading cause of death is due to cardiovascular disease, and number of individuals diagnosed with an illness continues to grow rapidly, many turn to quick solutions such as medications to help with the ongoing problems, and do not consider the likelihood that preventive measures like exercise, and increased activity play in helping to shape health outcomes (World Health Organization, 2015). It is reasonable to ask how such subtle improvements in the change of behaviors of physical activity can vastly change and directly affect overall functioning.
