The Global Food Security Act was induced by the previous food security initiatives the United States government had established, which were upheld by the U.S.’s political standing. The artifact above was a salient statement made by the forty fourth president, Barack Obama, when the Global Food Security Act of 2016 was passed into law. Firstly, he described the previous government food security initiative, Feed the Future (Obama). Additionally, the decision to propel this existing initiative into law was labeled as bipartisan, which meant that it involved both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. The conflict of food insecurity and global hunger was so significant that both political parties consolidated to pass the act into law. However, a previous …show more content…
Since it was established, Feed the Future has reached many areas including Asia, Central America, East, Southern, and West Africa, ridding 1.7 million families from hunger (“Feed the Future”). Moreover, the measures of Feed the Future’s actions include strengthening the resilience of communities and improving agricultural production (“Feed the Future”). Furthermore, In Obama’s statement above, he proposes even more government investments in agriculture in the Global Food Security Act. Nonetheless, although Feed the Future has reached millions of people, there are still millions more to assist. Consequently, the Global Food Security Act was passed and will work to build a more stable world. Regardless, how was Feed the Future developed? The U.S. was expected to lead an initiative against world hunger because of their industrial advantage. Also, the seemingly rich country has experienced poverty and hunger during the 1930s. Hence, the Great Depression greatly impacted the economy and societal mindset of the United States
Factory farming describes how large modern farms produce food in large quantities for a small cost. Factory farms, however, pollute the air by releasing harmful gases. They practice deforestation to claim more farmland. Factory farms pollute our waters to keep costs low. Factory farming is harming the environment
In the article “The Insanity of Our Food Policy” (2013), the author Joseph claims that the food policy of U.S. has long been with illogic, because of Congress attempts to pass a long-stalled extension of the farm bill, would cut back the pitiful support from U.S. citizens who in the lowest level of the people and use this money to continue subsidize a small number of wealthy American farmers. Furthermore, Joseph states that small numbers of Americans have grown extremely wealthy, and they get disproportionate size political power. In addition, the author points out American farmers are the most efficient in the world, but there are still millions of Americans suffer from hunger. At the end of the article, Joseph emphasizes Republicans’ food
both argue that food issues should be addressed by public policy. To combat hunger, malnutrition, and growth deficiencies in children, Frank argues that public policy relating to food has to be changed. Poor families should be supplemented with federal grants such as WIC vouchers to care for their young ones. Robertson et al. take a slightly different approach in their article “Food is a Political Issue” by not only holding the government accountable for reducing issues associated with food, but also the food producers and suppliers. Who should decrease the health disparities and care for the disadvantaged members of society? Robertson et al. advocate that although health disparities caused by food have to be primarily tackled through government policies, the health disparities are everyone’s problem and have to be addressed by everyone— from government officials, to religious groups, to the farmers and food suppliers
As the population continues to grow the challenge of sustainably feeding the population increases. Countries like India, china, and Africa are some of the most agriculture abundant locations in the world yet they are the ones suffering the most from hunger. Currently 1 in 7 Americans struggle to eat enough food everyday. Poverty in Africa however is very different from America in regard to hunger. In America 40 percent of Americans from age 25-60 will experience at least a year below the poverty line. This quite the contrary to Africa where most people spend their whole life under the poverty line. The major difference is resources, many Americans can overcome poverty and find a steady job to support themselves. In Africa there are limited jobs, most people have to cultivate their own food and supply their own drinking water. It is an endless cycle of hunger with no real way out unless outside help is given.
The first article 4 ways to end hunger in Africa from CNN explains almost 800 million do not have enough food to eat daily in Africa. This reason lead Africa to put greater emphasis on agriculture and supporting their farmers. They achieved to a remarkable goal in cutting the malnourish in half since the 1990. The United States has raised it efforts in the commitment to ending global hunger, poverty, and child malnutrition because of all the
Many factors contribute to the food insecurity faced by many American’s today. Poverty seems to attribute to the hunger crisis more drastically than anything else. More specifically, unequal distribution of wealth is the principle cause of hunger. The world does in fact produce enough food to feed everyone, the issues is that income is not distributed is in such a way that everyone can afford or have access to food.
I do not agree with the way food is produced in factory farms. Factory farms have been the cause of several deaths. Unsanitary conditions on farms have spread disease and sickness such as E. Coli. I believe that consumers should be fully aware of what they are eating, and the physical abuse that the animals are undergoing. These animals are being pumped with hormones, stuck in dark and cramped spaces, and are tossed around like their lives don’t have a meaning. Animals should be treated with respect; animals are the one that provide nutrition for us. In return, these animals are not respected, but are treated as a meal.
United States government nutrition support programs have been around since the Great Depression. The first program created was called the Federal Surplus Relief Corporation and was part of the Agricultural Adjustment Act in 1933 (“The History”). The program was originally set up because the economic crash during the Great Depression caused crop prices and the population’s buying power to plummet, leading to an extreme surplus of market ready crops with diminishing value (“The History”). In this program, the government bought excess goods at a reduced rate to support farmers then gave that food to hunger relief groups in areas of most need (“The History”). The biggest problem with this program was that there was not a good way to account
This paper explores Hunger in America. From thoroughly observing and comprehending information and analysis from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Stuart, T. (2009). Waste: Uncovering the global food scandal, and excerpts from Cheney, C. (2014, September 24). I have devised a plan which is modified to decrease hunger in America by following a stair step solution beginning at the core of how hunger in America begins. Through these steps I will be explaining a problem that is involved with hunger in America and providing solutions to fix them.
Food for Peace, which is has been the United States primary program for overseas food assistance, is estimated to have benefitted 3 billion people in 150 countries. The program begun as a way for the United States to put its surplus foodstuffs to good use across the globe, and has since modernized into a competitive process in which the American government purchases commodities from US farmers (through a competitive process) and then allocates them to needy populations worldwide.
Even though America may prosper, the future it’s still dark for many other countries and there seems to be no viable solutions. With the scarce amount of food that we have, it seems like an impossible task, with only three times what we require to feed the world´s population it is impossible to choose an alternative, such as distributing this food among everyone,
Food insufficiency is the struggle to know where one’s next meal will be coming from. One in ten families say they are not receiving enough food each day (Siple). This problem is very serious, our future depends on the lives of people living right now. Nobody should have to suffer through the pain of being hungry. “You can’t build a peaceful world on empty stomachs and human misery” (Borlaug 12). Furthermore, being hungry causes many problems, such as parents having to work several jobs just to provide food for their loved ones. If parents are using food stamps, they can only receive a certain amount of food. Because parents do not have enough money, they have to purchase junk food; however, it is less expensive than healthy food. (Minnesota Department of Health). Children have to go to bed hungry because they did not get to eat supper. Sometimes the only meals these kids get are the ones at school, because they apply for free lunches. Children that are arriving at school who have not eaten much and are hungry. Their performance and grades in school are worse than those who have enough to eat. Studies show that children who are struggling with food insufficiency are more likely to repeat a grade (PR Newswire). The ultimate goal is to get rid of starvation in America. Second Harvest is an organization that comes up with ideas on how to end hunger in America (Ford). They have several links
People have been taking action on solving the world issue of hunger and poverty since the 1900s, ever since poverty could be recognized in society, hungry people have been present. The issues within hunger have been failing farmers and malnutritioned women and children.Farmers around the world have been losing their productivity rates and haven't been able to grow nearly as much food as they have before.
Look around. Everyone has their faces buried into their phones, laptops, iPads, etc. Many people would say that technology is taking over in our everyday lives. I, however, beg to differ. Technology is one of the best things the human race could get their hands on. Yes it seems like everything is in “the Cloud” or everyone is tweeting, reposting, Snapchatting, and liking everything. But how I see it is, a way for people to communicate and share ideas they have with other like-minded people, accomplish papers and essays without having to go to a library because whatever device you use, has a search engine that can search any question you have. As an aspiring computer programmer, technology will always play a role in my career because someone is responsible for the software and programs that allow a computer to run, the world around us is always adapting, and without technology, where would computer programmers be? If I received the Evolve IP Cloud Scholarship, then the scholarship would be able to open so many doors for me because I would be able to afford continuing my education.
Genetic engineering is currently a growing field in which people are obsessing over. This is new and upcoming technology that combines genetic and Nanotechnological enhancements, which completes the direct manipulation of DNA to alter an organism’s characteristics in a particular way. In my opinion, it may very well be a great improvement, but it should only be used when necessary. If I were a parent of a child under 12 years of age, I would not sign up for the enhancement.
