At the time that the constitution was enacted people feared for their lives they needed guns to protect their families and themselves. But today, we have police officers, security guards, and even the military for security and protection. These people are designated to protect us. However, what if the police can’t always be there to stop the bad people? Often they can’t be there on time when they are called. The only thing that ever stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. And here in American there are more guns than people. They’re not going away any time soon, nor should they. If banning firearms, people who want to hurt people and do unspeakable things will always find a way. And in a civilized society we don't take away people's
With gun related crimes steadily increasing, the spotlight has been on a solution to cease firearm problems. Firearms have been around for hundreds of years, and they are included in self-defense, sport, show, and unfortunately crime. The danger of the situation immediately escalades when there is a firearm involved. A plan to fix these issues has been talked about and looked at throughout the recent years, but there are many different aspects you have to look at when trying to find a solution for this problem. However, not all gun related situations are at fault, for most people follow the law, using and collecting the guns for sporting, collecting, and self-defense purposes. The second amendment in the constitution gives citizens of the United states the right to bear arms. Areas of concern that can be focused on to prevent future danger in firearm situations are gun control laws, process undergone
October 1, 2017 marked the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. With almost 500 injured and 58 killed, not only did Las Vegas feel the tragedy of a personal loss, but the incident had rippling effects that shook all of America (Flaherty). With the fresh wounds of the recent Las Vegas shooting, politician's initial reaction is to implement more strict gun restrictions and "lay down the law" to prevent a similar event from happening again. Due to the drastic laws being carried out, the topic of gun control is a current issue in society. Is the solution to implement more firm restrictions on gun ownership or can the government allow the people to be their own advocates? While the opposing views of pro-gun restrictions argue that is up to the discretion of the government, they are often narrow-minded resolutions with no hope to finding a real solution. This particular shooter obtained his guns legally and passed all background checks, going unnoticed until his plan unfolded. Establishing more strict firearm restrictions would not have stopped the Las Vegas shooting from occurring. The number of gun restrictions can not increase, the government needs to either fix the existing laws or do away with gun restrictions entirely. Gun restrictions are not the solution because guns are not doing the killing--people are, the laws only attack the law-abiding citizens, and the gun restrictions add another infringed upon right that the government controls. While voting against additional gun rules will not completely eliminate the controversy behind this topic, voting against these laws will be a milestone to regaining the rights we have already been promised.
Assault rifles are becoming the weapon of choice in these recent mass shootings. Since 2004, out of 48 mass shootings 13 of them included assault rifles. The assault rifle can be bought in many states starting at the age of 18. According to the gun control group, since 2009 individuals under the age of 21 committed two mass shootings with an assault rifle. Only one of the two rifles used was bought legally, which means just a single shooting where at least four individuals were shot and slaughtered could have been prevented. Everytown for Gun Safety reports, since 2009 there have been 156 mass shootings, eleven of these shootings were committed by individuals under the age of 21. Out of those 156 incidents 11 of those the shooter used an assault rifle. Although You have to be 21 to
Gun Control is one of the most debatable topic in the United States for the past several decades. America has witnessed assignation to mass shootings. Every time violence and guns are a factor of traumatic events the ongoing topic of gun control reemerges. The question that is asked is if our nation should enforce stricter gun laws. Would these new gun laws contribute to the decrease of gun crime in our nation? American citizens stand divided on this issue; both sides taking a strong position as what they strongly believe what should be done about guns.
On December 14, 2012, twenty children between the ages of six and seven as well as six adults were killed by a senseless shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary school. On that day, twenty six families were forced to mourn the lives of the loved ones that were taken away from them too soon. The shooter had been previously diagnosed with a mental disorder but was allowed to legally purchase the firearm he would later use to kill twenty six American citizens(“Deathly silence; Guns in America”). If the senseless slaughter in an elementary school does not provoke humanity to take action against the lack of gun laws in America then what will? How many more people must lose their lives before change occurs? For this reason and many others, there should be heavier restriction on owning and purchasing guns based on the benefit to decrease in homicides and mass shootings and overall American safety.
At 10:08 P.M. on October 1, 2017, the lives of thousands of Americans were suddenly and horrifically altered. Stephen Paddock, armed with rifles altered to achieve fully-automatic fire rates, unleashed an onslaught of lead from his thirty-second-floor balcony. His target was the Los Vegas Strip, where 22,000 people were gathered for the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. For close to ten minutes Paddock turned what was supposed to be a carefree culmination of the three-day festival into a living hell. When the smoke cleared, 580 people lay on the ground bleeding, of which fifty-eight were dead. The next morning, America awoke to the carnage caused by the worst mass shooting in its history, and true to form, immediately started pointing
Gun control has always been a heated topic in this country, and as more issues involving guns arise, the more heated it gets. This was especially seen after the Las Vegas mass shooting where 58 people died and 515 more were injured after a 64- year old man opened fire into a crowd during a concert. This devastating event should be enough for people to realize that more gun control laws should be placed around the country because most guns like large capacity guns are not needed for recreational use, gun control laws will lower the amount of mass shootings, and finally they will also lower the homicide/suicide rates. Although the other side may claim that owning guns is a protected by the second amendment, there is nothing in the
Over the past two decades, gun control has raised controversy upon the American people and changed the way people foresee firearms. Most of these controversies still continue to be brought up today. The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. (Brooks np).” In January of 2016, Obama stated his gun control plan that would more strictly enforce existing laws including firearms (Smith np). People deserve the right to have firearms for the ability to protect, defend, and entertain themselves and others. The biggest controversy, including firearms is the way people are introduced and informed about them. People are given the thought that “guns kill people,” when in all reality, “people kill people.” Although there are around 10,000 people killed in the United States each year from firearms, guns are not the main conflict in the killings, the people behind the guns are (Brooks np).
Murder, the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. Without a doubt, the United States would be a safer place to live, if our government had a better control of the amount of illegal weapons in circulation, along with minimizing the allowance of permits provided to people owning guns. Illegal crimes are growing exponentially across the U.S., with nearly 200 firearm injuries per day. The 18th century Constitution does not fit the criteria needed for the U.S. to have a stable and safe environment in today’s world. The Second Amendment needs to be revised in great detail to include all of the new technological advancements of the 21st century. Numerous mass shootings over the years have involved mentally ill people who were able to purchase guns after going through today’s process for a gun permit, proving our government’s control of guns is in need of tighter discipline. Gun laws in the United States need to be modified in order to keep citizens safe and gun deaths at an all time low.
We all love power don’t we? We love to bring each other down, we love to steal, and most importantly show that we are better than each other. That is why guns were invented in the first place: To show dominance over one and another, to show that I have the right to kill you with this gun because I have the authority, so therefore, I decide when the bullet comes out, I decide who to kill and who to blame it for. Imagine yourself sitting down to a student in your class who brings a gun, which is legalized, because he felt violated by his professor and shoots him right between the eyes. Why? because he was given a grade that he did not expect to receive on the paper he wrote about the legalization of marijuana. The Texas state legislature recently introduced a bill that would allow students to carry concealed firearms on college campuses. With broad support in both the House and the Senate, the bill is soon to become law soon, and Texan students will then be able to bring their guns to class. According to the article, “Gun Control Facts,“ by James D Agresti and Reid K. Smith, based on production data from firearms manufacturers, there are roughly 300 million firearms owned by civilians in the Unites States as of 2010. Of these, about 100 are handguns.” I never personally liked guns; what is so right about this piece of machinery for which people are willing to put their lives in danger? This is a question of rightness, morality, and value that should be essentially addressed today. No matter how popular guns become there is no need for them in our holy learning environments.
What is a Gun? According to Dictionary.com the definition of weapon means the following “any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.” Additionally, Google’s definition means “a thing designed or used for inflicting bodily harm or physical damage” Both definitions imply some sort of intent to harm or kill another human being. The most common type of weapon today that is used to inflict harm on others is widely known as a Gun or Rifle. About “ Thirty-nine percent of American households report owning at least one gun”(American Gun Ownership, By The Numbers). This is the percent of those who legally own a weapon. Those who do not legally own a weapon are not included. As the world becomes more violent and dangerous many feel the need for protection. Therefore, some resort to a weapon. Sadly some of these fall into the wrong hands. The statistics and deaths speaks for themselves. Something needs to be done about the use of weapons. Strict gun restrictions need to be put in place. If restrictions are put into place, and not improvement is made,
Although gun violence has fluctuated since the 1960s, recently it has started to become a major topic of debate and chaos. Polls and studies conducted by Everytown.org have provided some extremely frightening statistics about the gun problems in America. In an average year, 12,000 people in the U.S alone are slaughtered by firearms and on an average day, 93 people. That means that our country’s gun homicide rate is 25 times higher than all other developed countries. Even though they were only mentioned as statistics, these were all people with families and passions. Sadly, the gun violence will continue if congress doesn’t start changing the way our gun laws work. A great way to start would be to enforce background checks on all gun purchasers, no exceptions.
“If a child can’t open a bottle of Aspirin, we should make sure that they can’t pull a trigger on a gun.”
For the past few years, gun control has been an “important matter” in the United States. Every US citizen that is the appropriate age, has the “right to bear armaments”, according to the 2nd amendment. This Right is slowly being taken away from us by new laws and regulations. ““Gun control” is a wide-ranging term that covers any sort of restriction on what kinds of guns can be sold and bought, who can possess or sell them, and where and how they can be stored or carried. Sometimes, the term is also used to cover related matters, like restrictions on types of shells, bullets and magazine clips people are allowed to use”(Pérez-Peña 2015). According to Pérez-Peña, “In recent years, gun control debates have focused primarily on background checks for buyers, allowing individuals to carry weapons in public, and whether to allow the possession of assault rifles”(2015). Many politicians use the topic of gun control in their campaigns. “Laws on carrying weapons vary. Most states allow anyone who legally owns a gun to carry it openly, in public, without requiring a permit. A few states also have no permit requirement to carry a concealed gun. Concealed carry requires a permit in most states, but most of those states grant the licenses automatically to any legal gun owners who want them. States also vary in their rules on gun ownership in specific settings, like schools and churches”(Pérez-Peña 2015). In the state of Georgia, you must have an open carry license in order to carry in public. “For example, in Rhode Island, any individual with a concealed carry permit can bring a gun onto the grounds of a public school, but in Massachusetts, written approval from school administrators is required – and rarely given”(Pérez-Peña 2015).
Take a gaze at the past of our state and the act guns have frolicked in it. “In the Bill of Rights, the Subsequent Correction to the Constitution reads: A well manipulated Militia, being vital to the protection of a free State, the right of the people to retain and bear Arms shall not be infringed”( Agresti, Smith 1), and no one ought to be able to change that. Back next guns were utilized for hunting and, self-defense. I am not sure what has made people contemplate that periods have modified so far that we no longer demand guns for self-defense. From the gun owner’s point of think, though, those are yet the reasons that we own and use firearms today. In my opinion alongside all the offense that happens every single minute in our globe I desire
