In recent years, a topic that has been up for debate has been the right to own firearms. There are very divided and complex stances on this issue. It is also a very sensitive topic to discuss due to the history of mass shootings and the other alarming statistics of gun related crime in America. The discussion of gun rights leads to further conversations about gun control. Gun control is defined as the regulation of the purchase and ownership of firearms in an effort to reduce their criminal or unsafe use (Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia). This essay will address both sides of the issue, and also give an in depth analysis of America’s relationship with guns compared to other countries in the world. The second amendment of the United States Constitution states that; “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This amendment is the basis of gun rights as we know them today. Addition of this amendment into the constitution granted the basic gun rights at the time. In 1871, the National Rifle Association was founded to promote the shooting of rifles (The History of The Second Amendment, ThoughtCo.com). This organization would later become one of the most influential groups in anti-gun control legislation. In 1934, the National Firearms Act was passed, which regulated the types of guns one could buy and added a purchase tax. This was the first federal gun control
