Arming our Teachers to Protect our Youth The quality of safety for students in school is immensely important. Throughout history several school shootings have occurred which led to numerous injuries, and sadly deaths of not only students, but school officials as well. Each of the shootings had one thing in common; the lack of protective precautions. Allowing teachers and school officials to carry concealed, loaded, guns into schools would increase the safety of both students and faculty, and ensure that every student felt secure in school. The safety of children is the schools and teachers number one priority aside from educating them; however, numerous school shootings have led to fatalities of both students and faculty. Allowing teachers to carry loaded guns, upon receiving their concealed weapons permit, would increase safety in schools. Among the various shootings, the tragic Virginia Tech massacre resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals, both teachers and students, and 17 injuries. The shooter was a student attending the college, who after his rampage then turned the gun on himself. (Cook and Goss 47) …show more content…
Most of adolescence is spent in school, which means it is important to feel comfortable being there. The idea of concealed guns on teachers would ease many fears concerning an attack, especially with the increase of violent activities at school. Also, like explained above, a potential assailant would be deterred simply by knowing teachers and faculty were armed and able to fight back. In addition to students feeling safer, parents would feel assured that teachers would be able to better protect the student in the occurrence of an attack. Guns portray authority, security and protection; which all greatly assure a student’s feeling of safety. Knowing the teachers have proper provisions and training sets the school a step ahead of the game if there were a dangerous
There are three main advantages for allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon. The three advantages are casualties will be reduced if you could take down the shooter quickly before the shooter kills any more people,
There have been many pieces of legislation on the state level and on the congressional level regarding guns on school property. A very polarized piece of legislation was introduced in the Nevada Senate. Nevada Senate Bill 286 was created in response to several violent acts involving school shootings (Taylor, 2008). The bill would have given teachers the right to possess and carry guns on school property regardless if the school is a gun-free zone as long as the teacher possessed proper permits the bill specifically required the teacher to possess a concealed weapon permit along with a proof of completion of a specific firearm training program (“SB286,” n.d.). The bill did not pass in the Nevada Senate, but the bill did help to start the much-needed conversation about the ineffectiveness methods of the prevention of school shootings.
As this essay has shown, it is best for teachers to carry concealed firearms. It will provide safety to all school. It will provide security to inner city schools where school gun violence occurs most often. It will also create respect, which will end many shootings before they even begin. Students have died every week this year so far due to gun violence. Let’s end the trend and push for these laws to be put in place. Contact your senators, mayors, and congressmen and tell them that you want teachers to carry concealed firearms. If we have these laws in place, we can end the plague of shootings that has come over our great nation and move forward.
Personally, I think that teachers shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns in school for safety reasons, but many people including President Trump think differently. “Donald Trump has promised action to stop school shootings, suggesting teachers and other school employees could be armed as a movement led by students demanding tougher gun control regulations turned into a nationwide protest”(Opposing viewpoints 10). Teachers would be able arm themselves against the attacker to hopefully stop the incident right away. This way could save many lives and possibly reduce the amounts of school shootings. The shooter would know they could be killed if they step foot in that school with a weapon. “If you had a teacher who was adapt at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly”(Opposing viewpoints 10). Teachers having guns could assure the parents of these children that they will fight back to stop the attacker if they were to enter their classroom. Some states already allow their teachers to carry guns to school, but not many teachers feel comfortable doing so. “ Montana State law allows school boards to let any adult staff member carry a gun in schools. But fewer than one percent of schools in the state with a high number of gun owners actually do so”(opposing viewpoints
Should teachers with concealed carry weapons permits be allowed to carry a firearm on school grounds? How would a teacher help to stop or prevent a school shooting? Teachers carrying a weapon would not only increase their safety and their sense of security. It would also increase the safety of students.
Schools must be more secure. It's hard to find ways to make schools safer without sounding too extreme, but it's better safe than sorry. Lately there has been lots of school shootings and we are trying to find a way how to make learning facilities safer. One of the ways is not arming teacher, but there are many reasonable ways.
Student protection is the main reason supporters advocate for teachers to carry concealed weapons in school. However, students don’t want firearms on school grounds. In a survey conducted by DoSomething.org, seven out of ten students said they would feel less safe with a firearm in the building. At Texas A&M, 57% of the students enrolled voted against teachers carrying weapons. Also, students are safe at school already, 93% of violence against college students happens off campus (Huffington Post, Students Don’t Want It).
In recent shootings in Parkland, Florida teacher Scott Beigel lost his life. To mention another Viki Soto, one of six teachers killed in the Sandy Hook School shooting, died without the chance of protecting herself. Teachers killed in the Sandy Hook School shooting, died without the chance of protecting herself. The only weapon she was able to use were her words which, obviously, were not enough. If she had been allowed to carry a weapon, she could have protected herself and her life could have been spared along with the many others who lost their lives that day. Teacher Kasey Hansen is one teacher from Utah that brings her weapon to school. She states “I would not only like to protect herself, your child and other children if I can.” She is only one of the many teachers starting to carry weapons to school for protection with school administration
The main reason for guns in school is to protect the kids. But the kids don’t want it around them. In a survey done by DoSomething.org, 7 out of 10 kids said they would feel less safe with a firearm in the building. While at Texas A&M, 57% of the students enrolled voted against teachers carrying weapons. Also, students are safe at school already, 93% of violence against college students happen off campus.
A hot topic that has come to light recently in the media is: should teachers be able to carry guns in school? To be frank, considering this as a notable idea is absurd. Instead of taking the fear out of school, it is being added. When one thinks about the traditional school setting, one can expect to conjure up images of a classroom with a teacher welcoming in students with a smile not with guns and pistols. Having teachers carry guns could act as a potential harm to students, disruption to a students’ learning, and a costly addition to the system.
20 children and 6 adults dead after school shooting. 2 Dead, 13 Hurt in California School Shooting.(ABC News Writer,2001) Teachers should have the option to conceal and carry because it would make our schools a safer place for the kids and school staff. This is because a shooter will more than likely stand down against two or more people with a gun, or the shooter will make an attempt to run or shoot and will be shot and apprehended. There has been big pushes to make this possible there is support from state governments, legislation, and even other countries governments. There has been support from communities, teachers, and schools that have allowed teachers to carry. Teachers should have the option to conceal and carry because it would
Allowing teachers to be armed can save your child’s life A 2013 research article in the Wall Street Journal reported that the average police response time to an emergency call is eleven minutes ( ProCon.org). During that time, a countless number of students can be killed, because they are defenseless. If you look at the Columbine shooting, you can see that it only took 16 minutes for the perpetrators to kill twelve students, one teacher, and wound 20 people (History.com Staff. Now, imagine if that one teacher had a gun. They could’ve taken down one or more of the perpetrators and lessened, or wiped away, the death toll. They could’ve gotten to the shooters before others were killed.
There has been many school shootings due to the wrong people owning and having the ability to carry a concealed weapon. Not only could guns get in to the wrong hands, but the amount of funding that goes into providing them for learning environments is very costly. There are many different varieties of safety measures that would be safer than having guns on hand for school teachers and staff members. Schools will not be as safe if we are to put guns on campuses.
Teachers are now being asked to kill another human being or even their own student. There has already been 17 school shootings this year alone. This is why the teachers are being asked to carry guns in classrooms. Teachers should not have to carry guns on school grounds, the training would be very expensive, it's hard to kill another human, and teachers could interfere and more death could occur.
Discussing a license to carry in an educational setting cause you to thoroughly look at a the situation from both stand points. Initially one may think absolutely not but, then some may argue that it is a moral idea. In our society guns are very popular, due to gun violence, illegal sales, and proper sales of guns in communities. When adding guns to the school environment, this cause even more stress upon faculty, staff, students, and especially parents. As a parent, I would be highly concerned about my child being in an environment where guns where freely carried by teachers. However, some parents may feel safe based off the recent school shooting, and considering the type of
