All my life I have heard the negative connotations associated with the use of marijuana. However, extensive research has proven that the use of marijuana is less harmful than other legalized drugs such as alcohol and tobacco. The constant warnings against the use of marijuana no longer seem valid as it is now being used medically in some states. Thus far there have been many reports from medical marijuana users stating that it has improved their lifestyles and helped to ease the pain and hardships caused by a number of diseases or physical pains. Modern day society no longer condemns the use of marijuana, but has instead turned the focus towards the countless negative effects tobacco can have on an individual. Furthermore, many of the states have already legalized the recreational use of weed such as Colorado, Nevada, California, Maine, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Massachusetts. At this rate, it is fair to assume that marijuana will eventually be legalized nationwide. There are many pros and cons associated with the legalization of marijuana, however I believe the pros far outweigh the cons. To make sense of the debate, we can examine the effects alcohol has on our nation. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) “Alcohol alone has caused more than 25,000 deaths in 2013 and has contributed to 16,000 deaths due to liver disease.” In addition alcohol related crimes resulted in 2.2 million arrests in 2012.
