School shootings strike into the heart of every American. The thought of innocent students, young with limitless potential, being mercilessly mowed down wrenches one’s heart. Yet these events continue to happen. What could possibly drive a person to commit such a horrifying act?
A very controversial topic throughout the United States and the world is guns. As American citizens, we have a constitutional right to own a fire arm. But why is a gun so important and why is it such a huge part of the United States division of its people? The division starts with people using this Second Amendment to harm people. In recent years, mass shootings have become the norm for the United States and that outcome is not the purpose of the Second Amendment. These mass shooting happen everywhere from movie theatres to concert halls. But the majority of these mass shootings seem to happen at schools with innocent children aging from kindergarten to high school students. With the deaths of children in school rising, the urge to find a solution and develop prevention tactics have become top priority. Not only limiting the access to guns but finding out the reason behind the shootings will help aid in the fight to stop gun violence in schools.
Mass Shootings Recently there was a mass shooting in Las Vegas. A gunman opened fire on a concert from his hotel room leaving 58 people dead and over 500 injured. This incident has reintroduced the issue of mass shootings to our societal conversations. The topic of mass shootings is an emotional one. It triggers the most basic human fear, fear of the unknown. Most people have an emotional bias one way or another on this subject, making it a very sensitive topic of conversation. I will do my best not to offend anyone, if I do offend you please understand that it was not my intention. I will do my best to not let any bias I may have affect examination of this topic. My intention is to examine the topic in a logical manner to better understand the issue. This is a problem that is not going to fix itself. We as a society need to come up with a solution.
Unfortunately, the notion of schools being a safe place is no longer a trend across American schools. Disturbing mass shootings in the U.S continue to shock the media. A school shooting is when someone attacks a school using a gun. The Secret Service says these shootings are "deliberately selected
I have been a student in the Thomas County School System ever since I started pre-school. During my time here, I have loved every minute of it, learning and having great experiences with friends and teachers here. Over the last four years of my high school experience, I have noticed that there have been more threats of bombings and shootings around the nation. Even though we do have a safe school and take precautions, there is still room for error. I am proposing that we make school a safer place for kids to learn by installing bulletproof glass as well as door-stoppers in each class.
There are many problems in this world today. One main problem in the United States and all over the world is mass shootings. This problem is a huge one because it involves people killing other people and that is just unacceptable. In the last ten years there have been over 53 mass shootings in the United States, not including the rest of the world (Chris Wilson). In the last thirty-five years there have been seven-hundred and twenty-two and then one thousand one-hundred seventy-seven (Chris Wilson). If you look at the number of people that are killed or being wounded, you will notice that with new devices being introduced. One of the devices that have been introduced is a bump stock. This device is a stock for a semi-automatic rifle that can basically turn your semi-automatic rifle into a fully automatic rifle. They are considering making this attachment to a rifle illegal to the public.
In The United States of America, 285 people have been injured and 126 have been killed in a total of 73 shootings that have occurred within the first three months of 2018 (Mass Shootings Tracker). This is a sad reality which is sweeping across America. Gun control has become an
In 1999, the state of Connecticut passed a gun seizure law allowing judges to confiscate guns from citizens if the police can provide evidence that the person is a threat to society or to themselves. Within two weeks of the seizure, a hearing must be held which will determine if the gun may be returned to the citizen or if the state will be authorized to hold the gun for up to a year. This law was put into place after four killings with a firearm in 1998 by a mentally ill man. The state of Indiana has a similar law, which was passed in 2005, and two other states, California and New Jersey, are now contemplating the enforcement of regulations like those in Connecticut and Indiana after a mass killing in Santa Barbra, California by a mentally
According to President Trump, arming teacher with guns will become the solution to school shootings. Presently, thirty-two mass shooting have taken place all over the states of America since the year 2005. In fact, the most recent occurred the fourteenth of February this year, 2018, in Florida. Nikolas Cruz, the school shooter, previously attended Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and reportedly suffers from mental illnesses which may contribute to his motives.
We now live in a world where we have to protect children no matter where they are. It's crazy how we now have to take extra precautions to protect children while they are even at school. School shootings have gotten more frequent and deadly in the past few years. Approximately 17 years ago on April 20, 1999 in a small town called Littleton, Colorado, one high school was about to change forever. It was one of the deadliest school shootings in the nation's history.
The United States is not lacking in notable mass shootings over the years, and it is difficult to narrow it down. The LA Times posted an article on December 2, 2015 entitled Deadliest U.S. Mass Shootings 1984-2015. This article lists 46 “notable mass shootings” over the past 31 years. These
Every year, more than two thousand people die in the United States from gun-related injuries. The population groups most affected by these avoidable deaths are children and young adolescents. The misuse of firearms is a problem in the United States and also a bigger problem worldwide, of course. However, the incidence of firearm use does vary from country to country. According to the United Nations Report on Firearm Regulation, Crime Prevention, and Criminal Justice (1997), the United States has "weaker firearm regulations and higher numbers of deaths involving firearms than all other industrialised, and even most developing, nations." The study also showed that the total firearm death rate in the United States in 1995 was 13.7 per 100,000 people, "three times the average rate among other responding countries and the third highest, after Brazil and Jamaica."
Controlling what and how many guns citizens have is a very good idea. It is a good idea because when guns are held back from citizens their will be a decrease in : Murders, fatal and careless shootings. The public should be reduced from guns because in the 21st century anyone can get them such as, under aged kids, mentally challenged adults and kids, it could always end
Gun control is a controversial topic within American communities. Loopholes in current gun control laws give dangerous people access to firearms. Mass shootings have increased while government policies reduced requirements for background information regarding mental health and the ability to obtain high-capacity semiautomatic assault weapons. High-capacity weapons are being purchased legally and used to cause chaos across the nation. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) of 2015 stated: "it [was] unlawful for a person to import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess, in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, a semiautomatic assault weapon." However, after that statement, it listed series of vague exceptions that could be loopholes for people declared unstable. People who have shown violent tendencies should not be able to secure weapons that could bring harm to themselves or others.
In today's world one is forced to worry about becoming another victim in America's mass shooting epidemic while attending a public event. In years past, one would not have had a second thought about whether they want to go to a public gathering. They wouldn't have to take the risk of being subjected to mass violence, for it was practically nonexistent. Mass violence has been committed more often within the last five years, than ever before. More specifically, the use of guns to commit these acts of mass violence has greatly increased. Taking these guns out of the equation would help the rising number of mass violence’s to go down, letting people have peace of mind in knowing they are less likely to become a statistic due to gun violence. So, although there are many tools that are used in mass violence, one stands out as the most deadly - assault style guns. To end mass violence with these guns, new laws need to prohibit the purchases of assault style guns.
