Mental illness is a very real, and very substantial problem. As a person that suffers from several mental illnesses, such as Depression, general and social anxiety, I can say that it's not always easy to have a face to face conversation about the issues in my head. Not only that, but the reasons for not getting help can vary, from severe anxiety making speaking to people difficult, cost, location, etc. One thing I have found is finding help online is, while still mildly difficult, easier. So what can the internet do for people suffering with mental health? Can it help or is it part of the problem? It helps more than some could understand. The internet is a very useful tool for the mentally ill and should be taken advantage of in order to help the people who need it. According to two different articles posted in two thousand sixteen “One in four American adults is affected by a mental disorder each year. . .” (“Mental disorders” 1), and “One in five kids ages 13-18 in the U.S. experiences a mental health condition in any given year. . .” (Villalpando 1). Mental illness is an epidemic and it starts young. According to Nicole Villalpando “Fifty percent of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and 75 percent by age 24” (1). Mental illness will not only affect the one with the disorder, but everyone around them. There is such a vast array of disorders, ranging from eating disorders, to anxiety, to schizophrenia.
