Obesity has been going on for many years, it’s not just a label it’s also a disease and condition like cancer or diabetes people might not think of it in that way but it does come with many effects and bad outcomes. As years pass by you might see some people getting bigger and bigger and eventually you'll you may ask yourself “ Why are they so big?” or “How did they get to that point?”. Well it’s called Obesity, Obesity is a disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of health problems. Obesity has not only become a problem in America, but a global problem. Since 1962 obesity has been on the rise and people have dealing with it, since then many americans from infants to adults have been dealing with many health problems because of obesity. Now to answer your question. How did it all start ? Well the answer to your question is food. Since 1970, the amount of fast food restaurants in business doubled, which equates to about 300,000 establishments in the United States (Sarah Muntel). Everywhere we go there will always be a restaurant there, fast food restaurants isn’t something we can just run away from. Many people will just order a meal to go and that meal will be around 1,000+ calories just from one meal alone. Afterwards, people would just get home and sit in front of a big giant screen and they won’t do anything productive afterwards which causes them to gain fat. Many doctors recommend for an average American to consume 1,500-1,800 calories per day
As years go by American weight struggle has been getting worse. People with diabetes today has more than double since 1994. While there are ways to help bring down obesity, most companies have not taken action. There are many factors to why obesity has only been increasing all these years.
Obesity in America is a very serious problem affecting many Americans currently and is a problem that continues to grow each year. Obesity is a disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of health problems. I believe that obesity in America is a huge problem which is caused by a few factors. Obesity in America is a huge problem that continues to escalate due to fast food chains, lack of physical activity, and overeating.
Obesity is a very serious subject that a lot of people take lightly, especially us as Americans. America is the most obese country in the world. Statistics show that 300,000 people die a day in the United States of America due to obesity. This clearly shows that we have a serious problem that is massively underestimated. Obesity is also something that countries all across the world suffer from. For example, Australia is also one of the most obese countries in the world, and 50,000 people die a year from obesity in Australia. That’s 140 people who die per day in Australia. To solve the problem of obesity the prices of junk food should be raised and the prices of healthy food should be lowered and more convenient.
Childhood Obesity has become a topic of national concern. There has been an extremely rapid increase in the number of obese children in the recent years. The percentage of obese children from the age of 6-11 has increased from 7% to 18% and for adolescents age 12-19, a 5% to 21% in a short span of about 30 years. This epidemic has grown to such a high number that it had been brought to the attention Michelle Obama, the First Lady of America, who then created a plan to try to end this Childhood Obesity Epidemic in 2010. So, what is the cause of this new and uprising epidemic? Among the articles that I’ve come across, researchers have begun to link the source to the lack of exercise and fast food establishments.
Everybody has their own opinions, but who is truly to blame for children eating street food often? It is a rising problem that children are choosing large meals in comparison to small meals that parents are purchasing for them. People becoming overweight is an issue that has been rising since the 1970s. At young ages, they are experiencing diseases and conditions associated with obesity which was never an issue before the 1970s. Since the 1970s, the obesity epidemic has started rising as an issue due to latch key kids, divorced parents and boxed foods becoming popular for teens to make at home alone. In the 1970s, the only term for obesity was being overweight, then as more children became overweight it was known as obesity by the late 1900s. America's millennials were becoming more introduced to processed foods and supersizing of those foods which made them gain weight rapidly. It is up to the young adults of now to fix the obesity epidemic by changing the way they are eating through educating themselves. They are the future parents and lawmakers that will hopefully decrease obesity in future children and people. Millennials and fast food companies need to take a step forward and reduce the amount of people becoming overweight by taking personal responsibility for the issue and promoting healthier foods.
Obesity is a growing epidemic in the American people, but what is the root of this seemingly unavoidable problem? According to David Zinczenko, it is the failings of the American society, but in the opinion of Radley Balko, it’s the facilitation of the government's support and the failure to take self-responsibility from the people themselves. They both have an opinion as to what the cause of obesity in America, but Zinczenko has the better argument. Through the use of real-life examples, refutation, and sound logic/reasoning Zinczenko writes a more persuasive piece than Balko.
People should not blame fast food restaurants for obesity; they are just giving consumers what they want (Williams). If fast food restaurants removed all unhealthy choices from their menus and made everything healthy, food would not taste as good and it would cost more. These restaurants would not have nearly as many customers, which in turn means they would be making no money. We can’t really blame them for providing what people want, especially since “Convenience, along with affordability and taste has always been a primary driver of fast food’s success”
Imagine a world where people can not go outside because their body is not able to move because of how much people weigh and need to stay inside where machines are helping monitor the health of the body. If the obesity epidemic and obesity related disease don't stop now that is how the future world will look like for the next generation and it does not seem nice. Back in the 1970’s people would have never expected a future like that because it was all about healthy foods and exercising regularly. Now in 2017 it is all about eating at fast food restaurants and binge watching shows on Netflix. Many people's mentality today is why go outside to exercise when there is technology as entertainment where the gossip and entertainment is at? People fail to realize that lying on the couch or in bed after eating is a higher risk for obesity. Personal responsibility is what people are failing to accept when it comes to obesity, blaming others for something people can become educated about seems easier. The media is also at fault for all the propaganda about unhealthy fast food, and not the healthy food that benefits the persons body. 18-26 year-olds have the chance to change this generation's mentality about obesity and change the future generation alongside the media who should change what is being advertised and make the people choose a healthier and better option.
Justin Timberlake, one of the most popular recording artists today, filmed a commercial for McDonald's. A spokeswoman for McDonald's said "the campaign is getting "buzz on the street." The song he sings in the commercial was also to be released as a full length single (MacArthur, 2003, p. 2).
Obesity, in addition to the negative impact on human health, also leads to considerable expenses for the global economy: reduced productivity, increase of the amount of fuel for transportation, rising medical expenses. To resolve the problem of excess weight is annually spent about two trillion dollars.
The lifestyle, portion size, cost of food and the lack of motivation and time. It really is easier to ignore all of the factors that contribute to obesity. America has gotten ourselves into this within the past couple of years and is trying to find a way out. It will be hard because there is not one clear cut way to fix this problem. It’s one of the many reason that makes obesity such a hard topic to talk about or understand. Different techniques work for different people.Everyone knows the phrase “ Eat a balanced healthy meal and exercise.” But, it is much harder than
Obesity is a huge problem in America, it can cause your entire body problems, and can cut your life short. There are many ways to obtain obesity, like overeating, consuming too many processed sugars and artificial sugars, and lack of movement and exercise. There are also many ways to prevent obesity, like dieting and cutting out junk foods, eating organic healthy foods, and exercising and being active. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Pg.1) about one third of adults in America have obesity. Obesity causes many diseases and deaths in America, and it’s one of the highest cause of preventable deaths.
Everyone loves food. Not a specific kind of food, just food in general. There isn’t a special reason why, but we all just do as if we are attracted by a magnet or something. However, we all know that overeating of foods that have lots of fats and calories cause obesity and it can lead to many serious diseases. Many people know the consequences of eating too much. In their mind, they yell at themselves to stop eating, but they just can not. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the prevalence of obesity among adults more than doubled from 13.4 percent in 1960 to 34.3 percent in 2008 (Abdukadirov & Marlow par. 1). Because obesity is such a national problem, governments are trying to solve it. Despite all the methods or solutions governments have used to help our obesity problem, there are always other sides that show governments are not actually helping. Government interventions to prevent customers from consuming too much foods that have lots of fat and calories do not actually help the people and our obesity problem.
Obesity all around the world is one of the most important issues facing us today, how could we possibly make young people stop eating junk and start eating healthy? It seems almost impossible but it in fact is not, all we need is for people to want to help make the change. Parents raise their kids and show them what’s right from wrong so they should also teach them the harm that comes from bad food and lead them towards fruits and vegetables. Aside from parents helping their kids make the right food choices, schools have to stop providing kids with meals that are not made fresh at the school and with drinks that contain sugar that students drink on a regular basis. The principles should acknowledge this and take action against the sugary foods given at their schools and do something to make the change from bad to healthy.
Mouth watering food will cause this generation to be the first that does not outlive their parents. In the early 70’s, children grew up in a traditional home environment where a home cooked meal was expected. But later on in the years, America had an economic change with typical living situations which led to a shift in a family's diet. Due to junk food and processed foods becoming a normal eating habit, America’s health has been declining ever since. Many people believe bigger portion sizes, increase in availability, and a lack of exercise is the problem of the obesity epidemic. 18-25 year olds (Millennials) are the leading group of people to attack this problem because they can fix it for several generations at once. Solving this problem with this generation will not only benefit millennials but others from here on out because these are the future parents, educators, and leaders who will transfer a new healthstyle to new generations in America. In order to solve obesity and obesity diseases, 18-25 year olds need to make healthier life choices by having personal responsibility.
