In 2007, there were 14,831 murders, and of those 14,831 murders, about half of them were murdered by someone that they knew, such as an acquaintance, family member, romantic partner, work colleague, or neighbor. Only about 1,900 people were murdered by a complete stranger. On top of that striking statistic, you are also most likely to be murdered in the context of an argument (O’Neill). These facts suggest that the people you should be the most scared of aren’t those that you don’t know, but those you are closest to, and that the most dangerous place isn’t the bad part of town, but rather in the midst of an argument somewhere you feel safe with someone you are close to, and that is quite frightening. This shows that the state had been given rationale to believe that Adnan had a reason to kill Hae through evidence. Adnan did not love her and his pride had taken a hit so he set out to kill her. Another specific example, according to Koenig, “Hae’s closest friends… a couple of them did say that he (Adnan) seemed to be… over involved with her somehow” (Koenig, “The Breakup”). This shows that the people closest to Hae saw that this was an unhealthy relationship. This wasn’t a normal happy relationship, but more of a controlling one, where Adnan was over involved and trying to monopolize Hae’s time. An additional piece of evidence came from an interview with Aisha, a close friend of Hae’s. “The constant paging her if she was out… if we were having a girls night, he would stop by, like he would walk over and try to come hang out” (Koenig, “The Breakup”). This quote is proving that Adnan took it too far by giving specific examples of the measures Adnan took in attempt to take over Hae’s life. Another example of Adnan and Hae’s unhealthy relationship that was never mentioned on serial was mentioned at the first trial. It was an interview with a teacher, Hope Schab, who had once helped Hae hide from Adnan. Hope Schab explains a time when Hae showed up for internship in the morning, but didn’t show up for class. She goes on to talk about how Hae had called her on the school
