The problem is people, not pit bulls! Pit bulls are constantly misunderstood as violent, aggressive fighting machines but this is far from the truth. Just like humans, dogs mimic what they have been taught. This is no different for the pit bull breed. They need to be treated with compassion and shown right from wrong. If we train any animal to be spiteful fighters that is exactly the attitude they will reflect because all animals are obedient to their owners. Pit bulls have had a long history varying from being considered nanny dogs to the most hated breed in America. Shelters and pit bull rescues should come together and add a more positive outlook for these noble companions. Some of the positivity they should put out includes the following: They help kids become stronger readers because many kids with reading disabilities won’t read to an adult but they will read to a dog, they are seizure watch dogs, diabetic alert dogs, comfort nursing home residents and offer a plethora of services to human counterparts (Sara K Enos 2). Pit bulls should be properly bred, trained, and managed by owners to prevent attacks. Many statistics and surveys have shown pits to be one of the most populated dogs in the United States with numbers in the millions. Unfortunately, a great portion of this dog population are strays. With this many pit bulls roaming the streets wouldn’t we hear of way more fatal attacks by these heinous beasts? We only hear of very few fatal attacks a year usually only announced when involving pit bulls. Several cases are frequently carried out by different dog breeds but if police can’t identify them specifically officers and media will just claim them to be some type of pit bull mixed breed.
