I looked up after I stepped up out of the subway station directly in front of Pace University. This was right next to City Hall. My gaze landed on three police officers. They looked more like soldiers preparing for war. Machine guns draped around their necks. Fingers centimeters from the trigger. Extra cartridges were strapped to their chests, they wore helmets, glasses, and wore gloves. To my surprise, they still carried their standard Glock 19, S&W 5946 or a Sig Sauer P226 DAO in a holster. They stood stern-faced with perfect posture. Their clothing was like armor. People I talk to today, say that New York City is extremely safe. Those who lived in Queens and the South Bronx as children and young adults would challenge this opinion. Do the heavily armed police officers make the environment safer? I have been told that this should make me feel safe. The real question is why do people feel that this is needed? Many see the use of these types of heavily armed and trained police insulting. Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, the Partnership For Civil Justice Fund’s executive director, a legal group, stated that, “The comparison of Black Lives Matter and other large protests to violent terrorist attacks is an outrage and an insult to the hundreds of thousands of people who have been marching across the country against racism and for police reform.” She later went on to state that, “Thousands have marched in a massive civil rights movement demanding police reform, and the NYPD has
