Bullying In Schools Bullying is repeated physical, verbal, or social aggression by a group or person directed towards someone with less power intended to cause harm and fear. Bullying has many negative outcomes including mental health problems, substances use, shootings, and suicides. Name calling, hitting, spreading rumors, and making threats are common forms of bullying that occur in schools. Bullying creates an unsafe and unhealthy area for students. According to the article aggression, “Our culture punishes those who do not fit in the box with bullying.” Our culture sends signals that men are only men if they threaten others, fight, and are violent. When bullying victims become shooters they usually attack the popular students who have bullied them or others. The number in 2003 of children and teens killed by guns in school shootings could fill 113 classrooms of 25 students each. Because of bullying In the article School Shootings states, “In 2007 there were about 10 such shootings, the most notable of which occurred at Virginia Tech, where 32 people were killed before the gunman … took his own life.” School shootings usually end with many deaths. About half of victims who do not die from bullet wounds have very severe effects that they are brain dead. These shootings cause traumatic and long lasting effects on the well being of students.
When witnessing someone getting bullied students do not know how to react. Witnessing bullying can create a wide range of emotions and stress from anxiety and uncertainty to fear and guilt bullying. Bystanders much like victim’s physical, mental, and academics are affected. Kids start to feel unsafe and will not get a quality education. They also tend to not go to school because they fear they to will get bullied. When students witness bullying they know in their hearts it is very wrong, but they do not know what to do. Fear is also a reason they do not react to witnessing bullying. Some do not say anything because they may fear embarrassment. They also fear they could make it worse by saying the wrong thing. Imagine that people of all ages are being harassed just because of not only their sexuality, but their identity. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. Individuals that are apart of this organization are bullied at work, school and even everyday life. Some dislike the LGBTQ because it goes against their religion so they choose to be mean.People bully, harass, and violate LGBTQ human rights because they don’t agree with who they are. Bullying LGBTQ is wrong because no one should be subjected to cruel treatment.

Today there have been several devastating acts of school shootings that traumatizes the minds of staff and student . One of the examples of an bullied victim retaliation is of the kids from the Columbine shooting, where two kids who were bullied went on a murderous shooting rampage killing the lives of many at their schools and taking their own. Things like the Columbine shooting makes students afraid and scared to go to school. Schools today need to become a safe environment for students not a place of fear. There shouldn’t be one child in the United States to be afraid to go to school. Today Teachers, Principles, need to develop a plan to minimize the bullying and let students know they are safe and should not be in any type of fear when they cross through the doors of the school
As a parent, one sends one’s child to school and expects the school to provide safety for the child. Yet, in many cases, children often experience bullying in schools. Both children who are bullied and who bully others may have serious lasting problems. Usually, for it to be considered bullying, the behavior must include an imbalance of power and repetition. Social workers often work with children who are experiencing problems at home, but they also work with children who are experiencing problems in school. Many children attend school and experience bullying, but there are not many solutions available to solve this problem. The three most common aspects of bullying are verbal, physical, and cyber bullying. While social workers help many children with issues at home, bullying in schools is a problem that must be solved. If many more social workers are able to implement methods to decrease bullying in schools, they could help reduce and greatly impact suicide rates, high school dropout rates, and mental health issues.

Bullying in High school in the Us shows that with every four students enrolled there is one child who is bullied regularly. The bullying that occurs in high school is carried over from middle school as early as sixth grade. In some surveys it shows that 30% of bullies have been either bullied themselves or come from a rough home life. Another survey shows that 77% of students are verbally and mentally abused, 14% of that 77 end up having a severely negative reaction to the bullying, such as anxiety, a drop in grades, and less want to be with friends. In the schools it is said that 50% of bullying incidents happen in the restroom, when there is no one around to negate it. However, 85% of students do not receive help from teachers or school staff. I believe that should be fixed and that teachers should actually show that they care. In a study in 2010 showed that 61% of the participants said that bullying was driving them to shoot other students. This is a very serious thing and if we really cared whether or not there was a school shooting we would focus on fixing the bullying situation. In that same study it shows that 23% of high school freshmen would carry a gun to school. With school shootings, it is shown that 75% of them are caused by bullying. The two main groups of students that get bullied are either overweight or part of the gay community.

Bullying has been a major problem in schools for far too long. Students should not be scared to go to a place that is supposed to be safe and where they can express themselves. Students that bully never get the punishment they deserve, which causes them to continue to act. When you go to school, you should know that if you are getting treated in a horrific way, the people who were treating you that way will get punished. Across thirty-nine states survey, 7.2 percent of students admit to not attending school because they do not feel safe. The importance of bullying can’t be undermined. Teachers and parents must understand the importance of looking and listening for signs and behaviors of bullying. This will help tackle the issue before it gets serious and someone gets hurt.
