On February 14th, at 2:19 pm, a boy arrived at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida using an Uber ride. Everything deemed it to be a normal day at the school, until that boy triggered one of the biggest school shootings in US history, killing 17 and injuring another 17 people. That boy's name was Nikolas Cruz, age 19. Two years prior to this event, the boy was expelled from that same high school for threatening to assault teachers as well as threatening to shoot down the school. These school shootings have been happening all over the US, including the tragedy in Sandy Hook Elementary, on December 14th, 2012, when a shooter appeared at the school with one handgun and one assault rifle. That murderer killed 28 people ranging from ages 6 to 35. The masked killer´s name was Adam Lanza, age 20. Between 2007 and 2017, there have been 420 mass shootings in the US. There was even an emergency dismissal at our neighboring town, Staples High in Westport, due to a student who was thinking of executing a mass shooting. According to a poll in the Huffington Post, more than half of the US is inquiring, why are gun control laws so poorly structured in the US, and specifically, why are people able to buy assault …show more content…
There also have been many debates whether the laws to regulate gun control should be enhanced or not. There is no right or wrong answer to this open-ended question because of the fact that people could use the second amendment to their advantage, or they could use the fact that many people have died because of these shootings. There also have been multiple court cases on whether gun control should be enhanced. The case on Nikolas Cruz is an example because there are two logical sides to argue on. The first side shows that the 2nd amendment protects his right to have a gun, and the reason he created a school shooting is that he has a mental
This world seems to be falling apart, going crazy, or even taking people away out of the blew. One of the main reasons behind that is school shootings. It tends to happen when people think they are taking their kids into a safe environment. School is supposed to be safe, full of kids talking to their friends, teachers, and maybe petting the psychologist’s dog just saying “hi” to the dog. For the longest time school shootings have been climbing, occuring more and more. Everyday, bad things happen which show how humanity is cruel. (table1, Mass Shootings Per Year) this graph is showing how the numbers every year change. Since the year 1982 and 2016, the numbers really do change drastically.
Guns have been around for hundreds of years, used as a well – known weapon during war. However, today our world is using them for uncalled violence on others. School shootings are sky rocketing as well as homicides in the United States, and nothing is being done to fix it. In the political documentary “Bowling for Columbine”, Michael Moore was looking for reasons why the horrific Columbine High School attack happened, why America has a high crime rate as well as the high access to guns.
How would you feel if you were a teacher and a shooter killed one of your students? I can only imagine the grief and guilt you would feel. “What more could I have done do save this innocent student’s life?” you might ask. Many teachers have to face this question every year, as the number of school shootings rise. Well, I think there is a way to protect your students and keep your school from being an easy target. If select teachers were armed, than schools would become harder targets, and students would have a better chance of surviving a shooting.
297 that’s the amount of people that are shot every day in the United States in some sort of gun violence, 89 of those people are killed while 208 are shot and survive.
Imagine this, it’s a sunny day and you and your family are out eating ice cream at a park suddenly you hear 3 pops, people screaming, blood everywhere and one of your family members lying on the floor, what would you do?According to the government, the definition of mass shootings is that 4 or more people are killed, victims are selected randomly, and the attack is in a public place. Mass shootings started in the 1910’#, but got worse in the 1070s. In the The 1990s, there were 42 mass shootings due to easy access to guns. U.S. citizens own more guns than any other country. Some suggestions from liberals/gun control advocates to solve the problem of mass shootings are to address mental health illness seriously, common sense control, and re-examine the media’s role publicizing violence. Some suggestions that the conversation/gun rights advocates have are school and public buildings should have more physical barriers such as ballistic glass and steal plating and they should have more trained, air,
“Former Student Opens Fire at Florida High School, killing 17” According to NBC News, this was the tragic headline after another school shooting. This can’t happen anymore. Something needs to be done about the tragic school shootings. That's why I think teachers should be properly trained and then given a gun.
We now live in a world where we have to protect children no matter where they are. It's crazy how we now have to take extra precautions to protect children while they are even at school. School shootings have gotten more frequent and deadly in the past few years. Approximately 17 years ago on April 20, 1999 in a small town called Littleton, Colorado, one high school was about to change forever. It was one of the deadliest school shootings in the nation's history.
Shootings at schools have increased significantly over the past years and have now become a huge talking point in today's society. Many people believe it is the guns fault and people are protesting to put stricter gun laws in effect and some are even wanting guns ban from civilians entirely. On the opposite end of the spectrum there have been efforts to arm teachers and school officers to try and prevent school shooting. One possible reason school shooting are such a big problem is the backstory of the shooters. One of the biggest reason kids are bringing guns to school is bullying. The recent parkland shooting showed this when the gun law activist emma gonzalez openly admitted to bullying the shooter. The only two ways people are coming up
In The United States of America, 285 people have been injured and 126 have been killed in a total of 73 shootings that have occurred within the first three months of 2018 (Mass Shootings Tracker). This is a sad reality which is sweeping across America. Gun control has become an increasingly controversial topic in our nation, but people aren’t shying away from it. In order to create a safer society with less gun-related incidents, we need to set more gun reform laws that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, and use of firearms by civilians.
In 1999, the state of Connecticut passed a gun seizure law allowing judges to confiscate guns from citizens if the police can provide evidence that the person is a threat to society or to themselves. Within two weeks of the seizure, a hearing must be held which will determine if the gun may be returned to the citizen or if the state will be authorized to hold the gun for up to a year. This law was put into place after four killings with a firearm in 1998 by a mentally ill man. The state of Indiana has a similar law, which was passed in 2005, and two other states, California and New Jersey, are now contemplating the enforcement of regulations like those in Connecticut and Indiana after a mass killing in Santa Barbra, California by a mentally
According to President Trump, arming teacher with guns will become the solution to school shootings. Presently, thirty-two mass shooting have taken place all over the states of America since the year 2005. In fact, the most recent occurred the fourteenth of February this year, 2018, in Florida. Nikolas Cruz, the school shooter, previously attended Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and reportedly suffers from mental illnesses which may contribute to his motives.
In this world today, there is a big problem with mass shootings happening more often. People tend to blame guns more than they do the people doing the crime. Some even say the Second Amendment should be altered or abolished. Everyone has a right to express their opinion on things, but sometimes in serious situations like this we need to really understand what the problem is and not make things any worse than they already are. Yes, guns do have a big part in mass shootings, but they aren’t the only problem in the situation.
As of recent almost everyone has heard of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting that took place in Parkland Florida on February 14, 2018. This shooting has sparked much controversy over gun laws and legislation, 17 students were killed with numerous others injured making it the 3rd largest mass school shooting in US history. Anytime someone is shoot and killed it’s tragic, but why so much controversy and media attention you ask? Well many survivors of the shooting are saying Gun Laws are to blame, demanding change. In recent years Sandy Hook Elementary, Northern Illinois University, and the Virginia Tech University Shootings have all taken place but with not nearly as much media attention. Until recently guns where not to blame but the security of the schools and the sanity of the shooter where questioned, but today most want to blame the guns, when guns don’t kill people. Therefore, gun laws shouldn’t change but citizens and public security should change.
Summer is over and school has started. Students across the U.S. re-enter the educational buildings once left behind in the grade level prior. Many things are shared in the safety of a class room, to include: laughing, notes, questions, and resources. These learning platforms foster a contagion for knowledge and contribution that will spread from generation to generation. Parents expect curriculum to be followed in the school systems and for any type of contagion to include nothing more than the common cold, not mass shootings. Homicides gain abundant media attention and therefore stem copycat shooters. The Media should not be allowed to report on stories of mass shootings, as the likelihood of a second or copycat killer immediately after
This is an advertisement that on gun control that came out a couple years ago by an organization called "Moms Demand Action". This shows two kids in a classroom, one with an assault rifle and the other holding a Kinder Chocolate egg. The add asks which is illegal in the US.
