Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, just a few of today’s most popular forms of social media. These new outlets for media have grown vastly popular, especially for teenagers. Social media is meant for networking and connecting individuals. It is amazing how social media connects billions of people across the world. However could it be doing more harm socially than good? In today’s world teens and social media are inseparable. Every teen has a smartphone and they are constantly drawn to their screens. Whether at school or at a resturaunt, teens will frequently be seen with their heads down, staring at their phones, snapchatting tweeting etc. Teens feel more comfortable sending a snapchat than carrying a conversation in person. Which is understandable since no in-person confrontation happens through social media. So while social media connects teens online, it also disconnects them from real life. That being said, although communicating through the medium of social media may seem easier, teens should spend more time communicating with people in person in order to better focus, learn people skills, and develop strong relationships with others. Using social media often leads to being distracted whereas in person communication does not. In Pamela Haag’s article “Your Social Life: Are you a Fox or Hedgehog”, she describes how she had a list of things to do, but instead of completing them, she scrolled through facebook for hours and was distracted (3). This is something almost everyone can resonate with. There are priorities to attend to but instead social media takes the mind elsewhere with its entropy of random information. On the other hand, when plans are made in person, there is a set schedule with specifics, such as when and where to meet, and how long the event will last. For instance, one night this past summer me and my friends went out for dinner at Norm’s, which is a chain diner. Seconds after we were seated half of the group already had their heads down staring at their phones. My friend Alberto and I did not enjoy how we made plans to eat together just so my friends could talk to other people on their phones. So we decided to make a pact where we put all our phones in the middle of the table whenever we eat
Social media has been a topic of debate for years. Some people are strongly against any use of it while others like the instant connection it provides. A major concern over social media is the lasting effects it has on teenagers. Social media can affect teenagers through many ways including things like their self-esteem. Cyberbullying is a raging topic of discussion centered around teens social media use. It can also effect their people skills and create a lack of community involvement. Some parents think that watching what their children do on social media is an invasion of privacy but is your concern for their privacy greater than your concern for their safety? Social media poses a great danger to today’s children. It can affect many aspects of their lives.
Social media has been known to help students develop important knowledge and social skills. “At first glance this may seem like a waste of time; however it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills, and be active citizens who create and share content.” (Chen 3). The more time teens spend on social media the more they become aware of their own social side and how to interact with others, especially their peers. “Some types of social media has beneficial effects, like helping adolescents establish some sense of identity and build networking skills” (Riley Davis). Too much time being spent on social media can also exploit teens to some harsh realities that they’ve probably never experienced in their lives before.
Thesis: Stay in the present moment, don’t let yourself believe you’re going to forget a memory because you didn’t document it through social media.
Everyone knows that lying is bad. Then why is it allowed on social media? Since you are a kid you are taught to never lie. Even though everyone knows this they still lie on a daily basis using social media. About 85% of people have social media. How many people do you think are currently lying social media out of that? Social media deceives the viewers because people create fake accounts, photoshop, and spread untruthful things.
Do you really have privacy when you send messages or post a picture on social media or is the government watching your every move? Social media has been around for over a decade and continues to grow. On social media people have the freedom to say what is on their mind, so why would the government need to overview everything said and done on the internet? The government wants control over its people. The first amendment gives us freedom of speech, but on social media the government overlooks every conversation you have. Although your privacy is being striped with the government breathing down your back, I do understand that sometimes it is necessary for them to check what people are doing online.
“The more social media we have, the more we think we’re connecting, yet we are really disconnecting from each other.” -JR, a French artist. Social media and texting can decrease your social skills if all we do is spend time on social media and texting because if all we do is type and not talk we will slowly lose the ability to interact with each other. I challenge the decision to allow teenagers more access to social media and texting. Social media and texting can often cause distractions, lead to suicide, and loss of social skills amongst one another.
Social media is a huge place for businesses to grow, and all large or small companies should have accounts interacting with their given audience. Posting on various social media outlets such as Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram are outlets that the recent generations are prone to using. Being able to post online about yourself and showing the world who you are is the new thing to do. This also comes along with pretending who you are online getting caught in an unrealistic fantasy world. Be able to get away from your real life and going to your online fantasy life is what everyone seems to be doing. Many of these people will hide the ugly truths about what is actually going on in their lives, trying to prove to the world that their lives and who they are are perfect. Doing so, no one really sees the dangerous side to how social media and technology has been affecting our everyday lives. Between editing a picture of yourself to make you look skinnier or to fix your acne to try and fish for compliments from others they don’t even know seems to be okay. Behind the scenes, social media has been an ongoing issue for teens for decades because of one major issue called cyberbullying.
One of the new phenomena of our generation is Facebook, and with four hundred million users, it ranks first in the 2017 “most famous social media site” chart. Personally, I believe a convenient social media should benefit the people on multiple aspects and Facebook successfully fulfills every category to make a social media pleasing. It all initiated in February of 2004, when Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook with the ultimate purpose to create a better communicative and connected world. Not only does Facebook allow its users to create and upload their own profiles with photos, videos, and other information about themselves, but also friends have access to profiles of other friends, allowed to comment on their updated status or write on their profile wall. Facebook successfully meets the criteria of privacy, communication, and keeps the reader informed of current events.
Emerson claims that people should be able to be confident and not care what others have to say about them. His argument is viable today because social media makes humanity feel insecure in many ways. Most of our society judges or makes funny jokes of people’s appearances on social media into making them feel insecure. The bullies mostly only do it online because they know they can escape since they are behind a screen and not in front of their face. There are many crowds who are afraid to go out into the real world. According to Elite Daily, an article on insecurity, “It's easy to forget that people only post their best moments and choose to keep all their worst ones private. Your life may fall short of someone's picture perfect one, but more often than not, so does the life of whomever posted it.” Most of the population only post pictures they feel confident about and look cute. They choose to not upload or delete the worst ones they have of themselves. Elite Daily argues, that social media has made mostly everyone obsessed with making life look perfect for ourselves. Some humans around the world have a mindset of needing to look perfect in the communities. For Example, most women do their full on face makeup everyday and spend lots of time trying to find the perfect outfit to look fabulous. They still wish to have a perfect body therefore they end up assimilating plastic surgery. According to Odyssey, an article on insecurity by social media, “We feel good posting a picture on our profiles that makes us happy, but happiness only lasts as long as it takes to find yet another picture that makes us feel as though we need to do better. Everyone should post what makes them feel good, especially ones with authenticity. But I truly think what needs to change is how we focus on life as a whole.” Society should not be able to only focus on their looks but also need to focus on other important things in life too. Soon, they will take better pictures and be even happier than the last picture. When someone receive a low number of likes on their picture, they automatically know “that makes us feel as though we need to do better” and upload a cuter picture. The author of Odyssey states, he/she should be able to feel
Youth are like magnets. They will latch on to the most popular trend whether it be clothes or shoes, beneficial or harmful. Children yearn to be cool, popular, and accepted. With these natural contained qualities, children are bound to come across social media, specifically a well-known site, Facebook. A site that enables communication. A site that might cause a child to be “lame” if not having an account. Whether or not children under thirteen should become users on this social media extravaganza is a regularly discussed topic. Some may argue against it simply because of the expected dangers that come along with any social network, but some believe that kids under thirteen should be allowed to partake in this site just as everybody else. These advocates are insightful. With considering the beneficial factors of Facebook including educational purposes and social development coupled with protective parenting, children under thirteen should most definitely have the deserved right of joining a quest they are regardless destined to pursue, Facebook.

Social media is bad for the teenager aspect of life by causing world corruption in many ways. Social media can change and become cyberbullying, social outcasting, lack of communication skills, and most of all, not being able to find whom you can become. This is not only through social media, but also video games, television, and self-reflection caused through these. Social media have progressed so far that communicating through face to face talks don’t seem as appealing anymore. There is Skype where we can video chat. Also, Facebook where we can chat or blog about irrelevant things such as what we are eating at the moment. I have seen some people even text each other when sitting side by side. Technology is an addiction, one many have trouble overcoming. I 've had trouble with social media for a few years due to drama, since you 're not talking to the person 's face to face you seem to have a newfound courage to be mean or even two-faced. I then went without my phone for a year and felt as though I could finally breathe and take in whatever was around me.
