When I started writing this research paper, it was just another assignment to get done but I learned so much and became passionate about the cause. I have researched different groups and have decided to volunteer abroad in an orphanage. These kids ask for nothing more than to feel secure and loved, something that most children take for granted here in the U.S. everyday. Volunteering has been an essential part of my life in the past few years. As an immigrant to Canada, I deemed it my responsibility to serve my community here and back home. Hence when I got ample of opportunities to get involved I always seized them.

Many people don’t realize the true value of volunteering, but I’ve come to understand the incredible impact of volunteering through my experience at Memorial Hermann. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” For me, his words could not be truer.

We can achieve these same differences in our school, community, and nation as just ordinary people. There are many different places that you can volunteer at, and they are very good choices. Places like the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, and Red Cross are all excellent places to volunteer, and I respect and encourage any person that is willing to put in time for an organization and not get anything out of it. I know how hard it is to say to yourself that you will get up and help an organization for nothing because I have done it. I also know the how rewarding it is to volunteer. This is partially one of the reasons that I volunteer. I personally prefer an organization, called Camp of the Rising Son. I prefer to volunteer at Camp of the Rising Son as a cabin counselor because of the fact that they are a Christian organization that teaches young children about Christ, and that I already have the necessary skills needed to excel, and because of the impact it makes on my life personally.

I learned to never go somewhere if you’re not informed on what will be going on or the type of environment I’ll be in. Never put myself in a situation where I’m stranded. Always drive my own car, that way I can leave when I am ready to go. This experience was not so great but there have been many other opportunities of service I’ve done that has impacted my view on the community. I actually enjoy doing volunteer work and helping out in my community. When I volunteered with Feed the Children, it opened my eye to how many families are struggling and are in need. While putting boxes together it made me wonder what family would receive it and what’s their life story. Volunteering has had a positive impact on me. I’ve gained confidence within myself, happiness, a sense of purpose, experience and communication skills. It’s a great way to connect with others. Knowing that I am helping someone in my community and also having a positive impact on their lives warms my heart. Doing service for others has helped me become more grateful and appreciative for the things I have. It showed me the lifestyle of living pay check to pay check and struggling and that’s what motivates me to figure out this college thing, so I can become successful and continue to help my community.
