The word sport is defined as being “An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc. a ” (Dictionary.com). Many people from all over the world have voiced their opinions on the controversial subjects.Most people do not think of cheerleading fits into the exact definition of being a sport. Whether or not cheerleading is a sport has become a national debate among parents, school systems, and even the National Collegiate Athletic Association has weighed in their opinion that cheerleading is not a sport. Some people argue that cheerleading is a sport and should be award the recognition it deserves. Whether or not everyone agrees that cheerleading is an actual sport, it should be recognized as one. Cheerleading requires maximum physical shape, is mentally challenging, and above all competitive.
Some schools have cheerleading listed under their spring athletics while others have it listed under extracurricular activities. Advocates for cheerleading argue that it should be listed as the sport only because of the size of participants. Rick Morrissey writes in his article “Cheerleading is not a sport, despite IHSA declaration” that “If the number of participants determines a high-school activities sport-worthiness, I would like to nominate angst and teenage rebellion as sports.” It seems pretty ludicrous to assume that just because many people partake in the activity, then it must be a sport. Another reasoning for cheerleading to not be considered a sport is that cheering is simply a popularity competition “ Cheerleading squads once were made up of the "popular" girls in school” (Morrissey). It is not very often that you come across a cheerleader who is not well known throughout the school. In most sports, the players are involved because they have a passion for it, not because they want to be voted homecoming queen. Even some cheer coaches say they do not want cheerleading to become a sport.
