Have you ever woken up and felt like you were still asleep and you could barely move because of how exhausted you were? Then you have to get out of bed to get ready for school and you can’t really seem to get out of your sleep. The reason you are always tired when you wake up to go to school is because you are not getting enough rest for school, so when you have to wake up your brain is not ready to function correctly. Some schools around the world are having kids and teens wake up early to go to school but when they get to school to learn most of the kids are still sleepy, which is not allowing them to learn properly and it's not letting them concentrate in school. Schools need to extend the time kids and teens have to got to school so they …show more content…
This is important because teens and kids are not getting the rest that they need for school. When teens go to school without their rest they are not getting the proper learning they need. If teens got the sleep that they need their school grades could go up, better and higher scores on test, teens could concentrate more in class, all of these thing is what most teens do not have. If teens had better rest they could increase in all of their academic classes and also teens could decrease in bad grades and they could pay attention more class because they would have more …show more content…
Teens need their sleep because if they don't get the sleep that they need, when they learn they are only getting ¾ of the information that they are learning in school. “Many parents have asked schools to start later, arguing that their teens have trouble waking up early enough to get to school by 7:30 a.m.”, says Liz Szabo, USA TODAY. Parents are concerned about their children's education and also about their future because a lot of teens are not getting their sleep. Concerned parents would want their children to get their sleep to be well rested for school and their
It is a well known fact that teenagers in general need more sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation: “[teenage sleep] is as important as the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat. It can even help you to eat better and manage stress of being a teen.” When schools start as early as 7 o’clock, it puts students health at risk. Adolescents already have a natural shift in their internal body clock, or circadian rhythm when it comes to sleep. Puberty allows this to happen, causing a “sleep phase delay” of about two hours. When teens can't fall asleep until late and school starts so early, they aren't getting nearly enough sleep. Lack of such, according to CDC, makes the individual
Do you wake up in the mornings to your alarm and snooze it because you are still tired and need more sleep? Many students have complained about the time you are required to get up for school. Most teens are arguing that it is healthier for them to get more sleep. In the article “Despite proven benefits, Starting School Later Remains ‘A Tough Sell’” by Tim Walker, claims that “...letting students sleep and starting school later can lead to better health and academic outcomes.”. Students should be given more time to sleep because it is good for them.
Jilly Dos Santos found that teens need at least 8.5 hours of sleep every night. Due to how early school is starting, most teens are only getting about 6-7 hours of sleep. A later start time would also help teachers get more sleep. Teachers would also be appreciative because their students would be more alert, listen better, and get better grades. This could help kids have higher graduation rates and better report card/progress
Typically, people enjoy receiving an extra hour of sleep, even an extra five minutes of sleep. Teens are just one group of people who enjoy sleep. Unfortunately, teens are unable to obtain the correct number of hours per night. Later school start times would be beneficial because the schools would see an impact on attendance, increased school performance, and based on several studies, students would receive the recommended amount of sleep. The psychological effects would greatly outweigh the negative effects caused by an early start time. Benefits of a later start time include, better health, improved grades and teens reaching the recommended amount of sleep per night. Downfalls of starting school later would be transportation issues, coddling
In the first place, students are not getting enough sleep. In the article “Should School Start later” by Lisa M. Herrington [20] “According to the National Sleep Foundation “59% of 6th-8th graders and 87% of high schoolers aren't getting the sleep they require”. This quote shows that students are not getting the sleep they need. And kids must wake up early how are they getting the sleep we need. “So why don’t kids just go to sleep earlier? It’s not that simple” Says Danny Lewin, a sleep specialist at Children's National Health system in Washington, D.C. “Adolescents have a deeply programmed biological clock to go to bed later and wake later” Says
To start school later due to students sleep deprivation.Letting teens sleep helps them get a better grade than when they are tired. When you sleep in class you don’t learn as much as when you’re awake in class. The earlier teens go to school
First, school times should be pushed back to later start times because students will not be sleep deprived. Many teenagers are not getting enough sleep and this is due to early school start times. A National Sleep Foundation Poll reported 28% of teenagers fall asleep at least once a week during first hour of school due to their lack of sleep. This means that
It would be nice if students could wake up at 7:00 and feel refreshed and be ready for a good school day. Well, students can’t do that because of the “IMS Student/Parent Handbook”. It states in the handbook “7:25 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.” which are the school times when school begins and when it stops. Independence Middle School should start at 8:15 a.m. because students will be more alert, they will have more time in the morning to eat, and they will learn the material better.
School districts expect us to wake up half an hour after the crack of dawn, go to school and while groggy and sleep deprived, and still expect us to surrender our full attention in each and every one of our 6 periods. Sending sleep-deprived teenagers to school as early as 5:30 is dangerously unhealthy, unsafe, and evidently counterproductive. According to the American Academy ofPediatrics, without receiving the appropriate amount of sleep teenagers find it 60% harder to focus in class. Lack of sleep can lead to excessive fatigue, emotional distress, laziness, obesity and a lowered perception of quality of
On the other hand, when teenager do not get their right hours of sleep. They mostly get moody, less active, and they would perform badly during school. However, it is important to be at school and learn but if
Their health is affected because students may not be getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep also known as sleep deprivation can include: “weight gain and eating disorders and increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular problems, and diabetes; reduced immunity; depression; anxiety; substance abuse; mood swings; behavior problems; suicidal ideation; and potential impacts on brain development” (Why). The recommended amount of sleep for growing teens in middle and high school is eight to ten hours a night (MacMillan). The recommended amount of sleep for teenagers is difficult for many teens to achieve because of how early school starts and how late they get home from school related activities the night before. For example, if a student was in basketball they could have practice from after school to five or later, or they could have a game an hour away. After their practice or game they could have a lot of homework and need to study for a test they have the next day. Students then go to sleep late, still having to get up early the next morning and go to school to take that test. The amount of sleep also has to do with the way the teen brain works. Emily Richmond says, “Adolescents’ ‘internal clocks’—the circadian rhythms that control a human’s responses to stimuli and determine sleep patterns—operate differently than those of other age groups. It’s typically more difficult for adolescents to fall asleep earlier in the
Teenagers who start school earlier have more health problems due to lack of sleep. Some students in school work or have extracurricular activities after school therefore sleeping earlier is not an option. Teenagers who don’t get enough sleep usually turn to drug and alcohol abuse. If students got more time to sleep it would give the human brain time to function properly. Students would have more respect for teachers and assignments.
Do you ever wake up and feel like you haven’t gotten enough sleep? The reason is because in reality you probably haven’t. Studies show that schools should not start any earlier that 8:30 in the morning due to teens suffering from sleep deprivation. There are many negative effects this condition can have on a teens body including a direct effect on one’s physical and mental health, public safety and excelling in the future. In the Ted Talk video, " Why school should start later for teens" by, Wendy Troxel. Ms. Troxel explained why school should start later for teens.. Students are very drowsy in the morning and are usually rushing to get to school on time which limits breakfasts times and healthy food options. Schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. for several reasons but sleep deprivation is the most important. Sleep deprivation can cause a direct effect to a child’s general health and behavior, public safety and potentially future success.
On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has
Teens should also start school early because, teens need their sleep. For instance, they could have an school activity, or anything that is happening outside of school. You should always get more sleep, because it could get you an jumpstart for the day. It could help your brain cooperate better.
