Staying up until 1am to finish math homework and studying for that huge history test next class is pretty routine for some teens. Juggling school, sports, a social life, and other extracurriculars is tough, and teens are already in a critical period in their life. It is the time period in which teens grow and learn the most, and sets them up for a bright future. Staying healthy both mentally and physically is imperative, and sleep is probably the most important. Schools starting as early as 7am limits a teen’s potential. If schools were to start later, the benefits would be endless. Schools starting later improves both physical and mental health of students, keeps the individual and those around them safer, and improves students performance in school and sports.
In “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” by Michelle Trudeau and “High Schools Will Keep Starting Too Early.Here’s why.” by Dan Weissman they both have their own perspectives on life about school starting times and the problems they may bring to the students of high schools.In Michelle Trudeau’s story she says that the starting times for high schools has many students still very drowsy and tired most of the time having them nod off during school instruction.She states that in an average high school 20% of students fall asleep in class on a typical day.Therefore, in need to prevent this from happening teens need more sleep as opposed to them not getting enough sleep from either staying up late or period as some experts say.There are many ways to add additional support for teens and their sleep.
Do you ever wake up and feel like you haven’t gotten enough sleep? The reason is because in reality you probably haven’t. Studies show that schools should not start any earlier that 8:30 in the morning due to teens suffering from sleep deprivation. There are many negative effects this condition can have on a teens body including a direct effect on one’s physical and mental health, public safety and excelling in the future. Students are very drowsy in the morning and are usually rushing to get to school on time which limits breakfasts times and healthy food options. Schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. for several reasons but sleep deprivation is the most important. Sleep deprivation can cause a direct effect to a child’s general health and behavior, public safety and potentially future success.
Over 87% of teenagers don’t get enough sleep and go to school tired. Teenagers have constant expectations to live up to, but with the amount of sleep they’re getting it can be seemingly impossible. The question has been brought up time and time again, should the school day start later? Because of the risks of not getting enough sleep, trying to keep up with their their busy schedules, and being in their adolescent years, having the school day start later would help teenagers around the world immensely.

Sleep loss has become more common in children due to early start times which only gives them 6-7 hours of sleep a night when growing children should have 8-9 hours a night. children suffer the chronic loss of sleep due to the hormonal roller coaster that you call puberty, which only lets them begin to go into a REM sleep around 10 p.m. . It’s also been proven that adolescent children suffer from highers risks of physical health problems, mental health problems, lower test scores, missing school, substance abuse, and being in a car crash due to sleep deprivation. Students end up having to get up before 6:30 to get ready and catch the bus or walk to school, but when you have to study for hours after school, eat, clean up, participate in extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, and do chores in less than 4 hours to get the sleep they require to be healthy mentally and physically it’s almost impossible. School should start later to better our future generations, with more sleep we could have more positive members of societies.

One of the many reasons that school should start later is because teenagers are more likely to pay attention in class if it don’t start as early. Many people know and say that teenagers and adult need at least 8 hours of sleep every night in order to feel rested and ready for the day. Nancy Kalish of the New York Times said in her article, “The Early Bird Gets the Bad Grade”, that research shows that teenagers have an internal clock that is set different from younger children and even adults. This prevents most students from going to bed before 11 p.m. because their body simply isn’t ready to go to sleep yet. Although they went to bed early, they still have to get up around 5:30 or 6 because they have school. Some teenagers can do this with no problem, but most struggle to get up that early every morning. “The result is that the first class of the morning is often a waste, with as many as 29 percent of students falling asleep, according to a National Sleep Foundation poll.” (Kalish). This can result in some students not even showing up making dropout rates go up.
Don’t you hate waking up to your alarm in the morning? Do you think you need more sleep? According to the National Sleep Foundation, American school age children are not getting enough sleep and it is a chronic health problem. I believe school should start later to make it easier for school age children to get enough rest so they can be healthy and productive.
“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” said Benjamin Franklin. Then again, going to bed early is not always an easy thing for teenagers. A lot of middle and high schools make their students come to school as early as 6:30 am despite the fact that most teenagers go to bed at 11:00 pm. With that schedule, students aren’t getting a full nights rest which is why schools should start later in the day.
It has been said that when teenagers sleep more, they have more energy during the day. Research has shown that teenagers experience a change in their internal sleep clocks so that waking up early and going to sleep early are difficult. High school classes should begin later in the day and end later in the day because that way students will feel more prepared for school and have enough energy during the day.
The moment dreaded most is when the alarm clock rings and pierces your ears with an irritating chime. We rustle through our beds to try and hit the snooze button as fast as we possibly can, just so when ten minutes pass, we get to click snooze again and again, until we are fully awake. For kids, it’s hard to wake up when there is no motivation to go school, when school is unenjoyable, and when you have to wake up at 6 a.m. just to arrive on time. Simply allowing students to come in an hour later than usual, will improve schools as a whole. School start times should be later to improve attendance, safety, and learning, which are all a vital part of a commendable school.
Students should be for a later start time because their academic success, safety, and alertness would all improve. As children get older they transfer more often to other schools. Start times are earlier and homework increases which lead to less sleep. Schools all around the U.S should move to a later start time. It would benefit both students and parents.
Thomas Decker once said, “Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” School. There’s a lot of things people can say about it. Mostly they’re arguments about school such as should school have trimester or semesters? Or maybe school should be year round rather than having a summer break. However, out of all those, one in particular caught my eye. Should school start later? Now me being a student myself, this was very enticing. Being able to sleep more and have a full night's rest would be delightful. I, myself, believe that school starting later would be beneficial for school and the kids going to school. It would have its pros and cons, but it would be an overall positive impact to everyone.
School should start no earlier than 9 am and end no later than 3 pm. The idea from the CDC is that if we start school later in the morning that student will improve both physically and academically. Studies show that lack of sleep can lead to obesity, depression, poor motor skills, and just an overall lower quality of life. Getting enough sleep is important for students’ health, safety, and overall performance but early school start times are preventing many students from the sleep they need. If students aren’t getting enough sleep then they are more likely to fall asleep in class and do horribly academically.
