The Dangers of Processed Foods
When was the last time you came across “Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate” (Figure. 2) growing out of the ground? Today's society offers new options for meals everyday. From fondue to fast food, there are new options everywhere you go. To clear up any curiosity, sodium stearoyl lactylate is a chemical added to Twinkies to make its processed ingredients more tolerable to the human body. Companies like Hostess and Kellogg’s are scientifically manipulating the human body, tricking them into being able to digest their chemical makeup of ingredients. The true challenge when finding a place to eat is not only considering its availability, but also deciding which choice is most health conscious. Processed foods may taste good going down, but they actually contain many unnatural ingredients, if that is even their appropriate name, that can lead to obesity and health problems throughout one’s life. Many of these processed foods are, unfortunately, the most readily available. The debate of processed versus organic foods is a common conflict in society today. Whether it is due to lack of income, or pure laziness, people choose every day to put toxic, unnatural foods in their body. Some foods that appear to be healthy may not be; the real trick to healthy food is being as earth-centered as possible. Organic means coming from living matter--food in its purest form. Living an organic lifestyle is most importantly, a better decision regarding the health and
Junk food is one of the main causes of obesity in America. It contains things that have unhealthy ingredients that could lead to illnesses in the future if a person consumes a large amount of junk food. But there are ways to eat junk food and still be healthy while enjoying your favorite junk foods . Over the years there has been a lot of history behind junk food and the effects of it. Some of these historical findings have started leading people to understand that the amount of junk food that they consume is something that is very important for the health.Usually a person who is young that consumes a large amount of junk food may see an increase in obesity cholesterol and high blood pressure. For a person who is older such as in their 30s and 40s they may then see those things as well plus other illnesses that could lead to things such as high blood pressure and heart disease .To avoid an unhealthy lifestyle in the future something that might be questioned. Is it possible to live a healthy lifestyle while still enjoying junk foods?
Would you like to have no decisions on the healthiness of your food, and being able to only eat fast food, fried foods, etc. Most people would say no and rightfully so, people should be able to have choices on the foods they want to eat whether it’s healthy, unhealthy, fast food, farm grown, we shouldn’t have only unhealthy foods for our choices of what we eat. In the film Food Inc. directed by Robert Kenner there is a part in the movie that talks about the food choices of consumers. A point that was talked about for a decent amount of time in this part was how healthier foods are more expensive than fast food. This stood out to me because it’s true it cost more to eat healthy than it does to just go through a drive through. This is outrageous it should be the opposite, we should have to spend more for fast food than healthy foods. While at most fast food places there are ways you can eat healthy food but it is still more expensive than just buying a cheeseburger or chicken nuggets. During this part of the film a family was talking and saying that they have to choose whether to eat healthier food or get there father/husbands medicine so he could work. A family has to choose between those to things and that is not fair to anyone that has to make that decision. The family wanted to have better food and to not always be eating fast food meals but they don’t really have a choice and that is heartbreaking to see.
People in Houston were told to evacuate their homes and to leave everything behind, due to the hurricane, but they couldn’t leave everything so they compromised and only brought with them the things that were an absolute necessity. Not a lot of people are able to compromise so easily. For some people this is a hard subject to grasp. Food is a major thing to in society today that not many people can agree on. Food is such a huge part of our everyday lives, but when two people are asked what they want to eat it seems that no one can come to an agreement. Food, however, is, “something beautiful to be shared with people” (M.F.K. Fisher), not something to cause problems and arguments when a decision about the food can’t be made. More often than not it’s really hard to compromise, but when it’s for the greater good and taking in account people other than yourself, there’s a certain satisfaction earned. In order to be considered a “well-rounded person” in society, it is inevitable that one has the ability to compromise. I had to experience compromise first hand in the humid, swampy, hot, seafood loving, Louisiana. “Four regions of south Louisiana were settled by the Cajuns.” (Ducote). So it’s probably pretty safe to say that Louisiana houses some pretty good, traditional Cajun food. This experience has helped me to realize my place in our culture when in comes to being a cordial, agreeable person.
As a nation, Americans revel in the consumption of junk food. These extremely unhealthy foods are often present during many various occasions, such as sports events, movies, and parties. When a person craves a quick snack, junk food is the ideal solution. However, beyond the satisfying taste of foods such as Doritos and potato chips lies a very serious problem. These foods can lead to physical disrepair, sickness, and even death. Yet many Americans remain oblivious to this nationwide issue and allow it to remain unaddressed. The crisis of junk food in America needs to be resolved immediately. To go more in depth, it is imperative that the nation resolves this issue relatively soon, primarily because the excessive consumption of
Healthy food should be accessible to everyone. If healthy food isn’t available for everyone all it’s going to do is cause more and more health problems. If we made healthy organic food the same price as cheap unhealthy food there would be a big difference in the health of our country. It’s completely unfair to make healthy food too expensive for other people to buy, which causes them to buy cheap unhealthy food, like off a dollar menu at a fast food restaurant. This issue needs to be put to an end.
When we eat food, we consume it with thought of it providing nutritional support. Suddenly it has become easier to obtain by just driving though a drive thru and ordering meal instead of it being home-cooking with no thought of where it came from. People believe that the food they eat is giving them nutritional value but in truth it is only doing more harm than good. While some may argue that it is ultimately the responsibility of the consumer because no one is forced to eat, but the main problem it to stop eating a western diet that America has been accustomed to diet or not. Because of the amount of processed food causing chronic diseases, inflation of the pricing of the health care industry, and the constant fact that food is readily available without properly knowing what they’re eating, it is not publics fault for obesity it’s the food industry fault.
When something is detrimental to our health, we strive to avoid it whenever possible to extend our lives. We know that exposure to known cancer causing agents such as asbestos and lead paint is harmful; therefore, we do not expose ourselves to the risk and we certainly do not eat it. This seems simple; however, what do we do when that harmful vice is food? We cannot stop eating; instead, we must closely examine what we are putting into our bodies. When faced with the choice of a burger or grilled vegetables, most would choose the burger. These choices have lead us down a path littered with food related diseases, illnesses and rising healthcare costs. The state of Americans health is declining due to increasing obesity, diabetes and
Food: You buy and eat it everyday. However do you ever stop and think about what's in the food you're eating? The average american spends anywhere from 6,604 dollars in a year all the way up to 8,886 dollars on food. That’s a lot of money. If consumers are paying that much money, they should know whats in it. It is an ongoing issue that most people are not informed about what they are eating. Everyone should have the right to know what is in their food.
As time has passed, Americans have become downright lazy and inconsiderate when it comes to preparing their meals. They substitute fresh, nutritional, balanced meals for a big mac on their way to work. Since Americans have become so lazy, the emphasis is on quick service rather than the quality of the food. “Open 24/7!” “It takes two hands to hold a whopper!” “There’s fast food, then there’s KFC!” “Your way, right away!” As Americans continue to fill their bodies with fatty, processed, fake food, people around the world starve, and their access to clean drinking water is limited. So how is America to help?
In America’s modern culture, fast food has become the most accustomed everyday meal choice for many families. Fast food is infamous for its cheap, budget friendly prices and wide range of meals with a surplus of choices for each. It's allowed americans more alternative ways of consuming food without having the worry of cooking at home. This increasing dependency that spans across the nation has made americans extremely adapted to the high sugar and fat content in their food, which may be dangerously affecting the nation’s overall health.
It is an undeniable fact that obesity is a major issues in the United States. With more than one-third of adults being obese and a plethora of chronic health conditions that result such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, our healthcare costs are rising (“Overweight”). As a result, we must analyze the situation and determine the source of the problem. Junk food and other snacks that provide little nutritional value are accepted as a major contributor to the problem, especially for children who may be exposed to advertisements for junk food on television and at school. The first step in conquering the obesity epidemic is not banning junk food outright in schools. Instead, we must focus on educating young children about making healthy
Have you ever went through a breakup or devastating event and went to resolve it by eating junk? Well, like you many other people resort to eating unhealthy food. However little do you guys know, every time you eat junk food it is killing you little by little. The food that you are eating is extremely unhealthy and bad because it is increasing all the risks to dietary diseases and obesity. Even tho it is so good and taste so delicious they are harming us each bite we take. The delicious body fattening food is extremely addictive in two ways, physically and mentally. The reason it is addictive is because every time you eat one of those snacks, your brain starts to crave it when you don’t eat it for a while, so soon after the brain will want it so bad and you will get addicted to it. When you are addicted and keep eating you will develop health risks and obesity. These risks are increasing stupendously because of the food being addictive, and because we are not realizing it. These two addictions can cause many health risks and lead to obesity. The addictions will soon turn into life styles and these life styles are what you see on television and YouTube and it is sickening to witness and see.
Do you make the right and healthy choice when it comes to choosing what you are going to eat? Do you think fast food restaurants are a problem in the United States? There are nearly five hundred thousand fast food restaurants across the world, and nearly fifty thousand different food chains just in the United States alone. The reason we have all of these fast food restaurants is to help people grab something quick to eat without becoming bankrupt. Stopping at a fast food joint can be extremely beneficial for those who are crunched for time, but is eating at a fast food place really with it? People should eat out less because eating out too often is causing more and more Americans to become overweight when they could be eating healthier homemade meals instead. I believe that eating homemade meals more and eating out at fast food restaurants less would really helpful in lowering the obesity rate in the United States. It is extremely important that the obesity rate be lowered in the United States. America is already one of the most obese countries in the entire world. It is going to be hard to change that if people keep eating at fast food restaurants.
The fact that America allows its food companies to put such unhealthy ingredients in their products is in itself a very troubling issue. In order to truly resolve the junk food crisis in America, regulations must be implemented that limit the amount of harmful substances that can be distributed into foods. Until now, the food industry has been allowed to frivolously put hazardous substances into their products to bolster sales, regardless of the various threats they pose to human health. Snacks that were once considered to be healthy are now filled with harmful substances that consequently make them fall under the category of junk foods instead. A perfect example of this is the Lunchables snack. While the majority of parents consider them to be a healthy lunch option for their children, Lunchables actually contain many harmful ingredients that make them the complete opposite of the quick and nutritious meal that they are marketed as. Moss states in his article that, “These would be promoted as more healthful versions, with “fresh fruit,” but their list of ingredients — containing upward of 70 items, with sucrose, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, and fruit concentrate all in the same tray — have been met with intense criticism from outside the industry.” By allowing the food industry to negligently use substances that sacrifice nutrition for enhanced flavor, society is allowing the once healthy options for daily meals to become ammunition in the junk food epidemic
What if you just count calories? Well, calorie content on packaging isn’t exact; it’s more like an estimate. Not to mention, it’s too easy for us to start obsessing over calories. The focus on calories pulls us away from the actual ingredients, not to mention the ability to enjoy our food.
