Persuasive Essay: Why Dance Is A Sport

Dance is an activity that is practiced by people everywhere and is often made into a career. So why is it not recognized as a sport? There has been much debate on the topic, but in my opinion dance is a sport. According to dictionary.com the definition of a sport is an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess, often of a competitive nature; diversion recreation, and pleasant pass time. Dance is every one of those things to many people and there should be no debate over its status as a sport. Being a competitive or professional dancer requires many things, such as practice, physical skills, and mental skills. Frequently, dance training begins at the age of four. From there on the dancers skill level usually increases with age, until they are too old to compete or they pursue a career in dance. Improving at dance takes time. Anyone can dance, but getting good, just like in other sports, requires time, practice, and dedication. A competitive dancer often practices about 15 hours a week. Practices include stretching, technique, and learning choreography. The goal of these practices is to increase both physical and mental ability.

Dance is every one of those things to many people and there should be no question about its status as a sport. Even with this evidence there has been much debate over whether dances’ place is in the category of hobby or sport. It seems evident to me that dance should be considered a sport. And next time you catch yourself thinking “that looks easy” or “I could do that”, think twice and remember it’s a dancer’s job to make it look
