In writing it’s important to have an understanding of what you’re trying to convey for your audience in addition to how you you will present your ideas. Effective communication extends beyond having well organized writing expressed in complete and coherent sentences. The style, tone and clarity of writing must also be considered, as they are constantly changing relative to the audience. Again, analyzing one’s audience and purpose is essential to successful writing. Appropriately, when choosing the most effective language, it is important to consider the document objective as well as the reader. In essence, this idea of effective use of language has been the overarching theme of this online English course. Each writing assignment …show more content…
Thus, the style of language used within the text was often industry specific and possessed a more academic feeling. For example, in the text I often used abbreviations and slang acceptable within the discourse such as, SCM Supply chain management, KPI Key performance indicator, and RDT Resource dependence. The word choice in this assignment is indicative of that fact that language is chosen in a manner that is appropriate for both the audience and the purpose of the writing.
Furthermore, perhaps the greatest contrast and the most evident of how language works differently in various types of writing is the discussion blog post. The blog post allowed the class to engage in different types of formality of language. The formality of the language one uses should match the formality of the situation and the relationship between the writer and reader. Therefore, as the public audience was a class of online students taking a required writing course in the summer, the formality of my writing has often been very informal. For example, in my blog post addressing my concern over the unworthy power of Beyoncé I wrote, “It was the year 2008 when the world was blessed with the images of Beyoncé (unapologetically) dancing around in a leotard. Not only is Beyoncé’s single lady video one of her most notable hits it begins her what is now a decade long relationship ending spree” (Marquis, 2016 ). The formality
I am sure that everyone of you have heard about aliens and UFOs. Indeed, we all have heard about the famous case of aliens and UFOs in Roswell, New Mexico. Most people might be interested in the topic of aliens, but I know that the majority of you just think of it as rumours and the existence of them are impossible. Therefore, I am standing here in front all of you to make you change your perspective. I am strongly confident that I have found the evidence of their real existence to convince all of you.
Technology plays a huge role in today’s society. Humans have been using the technology for years for almost everything in life. When it comes to today’s generation, people tend to rely so much on technology in order to help them with their writing. In the article “Writing Is Itself a Technology,” Clinton R. Gardner writes about the importance of using technology, how it affects the student’s writing skill in a better way, and how it advances student writing. On the other hand, Norm Goldstein, the author of “Speed Kills Good Writing Skills” stands against the usage of technology in student’s writing skill. Although many may argue about this topic, Gardner debates on this issue and gives his readers well supportive evidence on why technology is not harmful for students in his article. He provides some information concerning how it’s sympathetic for students to use technology in their writing. First, he mentions how writing and chatting online can be extremely useful in order for students to get feedback regarding their writing. Second, they have the opportunity to share their writing via online and can be seen by almost everyone around the world. Third, it gives the ability for students to write in a well-structured way using the right words and improve their grammar.
The specific informative speech strategy can assist with enhancing my persuasive speech because it can help create a sense of understanding towards my beliefs, and it may also provide people the necessary information to convert. There is no rule that states that I cannot borrow some strategies from one type of speech for the other. When it goes for my persuasive speech, I can use some of the tips that are for informative speeches to express my ideals in a clear and easy-to-understand manner and present the facts in a way which proves my thesis of a certain topic. Some of the strategies include: grabbing the attention within the introduction, compare your ideas with the audience, and use emotional examples for your speech. As for the introduction,
Sweaty, a protester stands enraged on a grimy battleground of ideas, a speaker spouts controversial ideas as the crowd rages forward, and voters raise their hands as they make their solemn decision. The ideal which makes these amazing situations possible is written into many Constitutions across many nations: free speech. With the advent of the internet and the patriot act, this concept is being stretched to its limits, and people on all sides are looking to the past and future for answers. Some look hard at the negatives that free speech brings while others look at it’s upsides. When speech incites violence, is it still only words? When speech is limited, where does it end? To me, all types of speech, hateful or not, should be protected, because words have the power to change thoughts, and actions have lasting consequence. Free speech is a tool for the common era, and should be taken very seriously.
For example, using a leftover coffee can for loose nails or screws, or even washing and reusing a plastic zip-loc bag instead of throwing it in the garbage. Thrift shopping is a way of reusing someone else’s unwanted goods. As I spoke about in an earlier speech about thrifting, I included many locations and ways to thrift, also the benefits to the shopper and the donator. One place in particular was shopping at the local boys and girls club. I personally shop there, keeping my eyes open for a good deal. For example, the pair of jeans that I am wearing today was purchased from this store just a few months ago. I paid only $8.00 for this pair of Lucky Jeans and according to buckle.com, a retailer for lucky jeans the retail price is $99.00 that is a savings to me of $91.00.I am not the type to worry about name brands, but quality usually does cost more. If I can get a quality pair of jeans at a fraction on the price, I am glad to shop at the thrift store. I am thankful to the person that made the donation of the lucky jeans and they can benefit from that donation. According to the IRS webpage, IRS. Gov it explains that an individual can donate items like clothing, household furniture and furnishings, a car or boat, even taxidermy. The donations are appraised, by the donator, and recorded. At the time of filing taxes if the donation equals at least $500 for the year, the donator may take advantage of the
It’s the best way to live, in fact… it’s the only way to truly live! It’s the key to mastering personal development and it can have a dramatic impact on your life. Have you been wondering about the benefits?
During the persuasive speech I was really nervous. I know that this is the third presentation that I had to do, but I really had a hard time talking in front of everyone. That was very weird for me because I thought that I would already be used to speaking in front of the class since I’m always talking in class and participating. In my opinion, I feel that I did more wrong than right during this presentation. I know for a fact that I kept repeating myself. The reason for that was because I was really nervous. I am a hundred percent certain that I knew my topic very well because I feel really strong towards this topic. I don’t think that your SAT score should determine what school you go to if you have four years of high school to prove you are certain college material ready.
In the United States of America, the Constitution has granted all its citizens the rights of speech, assembly, and suffrage. The entire nation was founded with the purpose of providing for a country in which principles of equality and liberty would be executed on a daily basis. However, what happens when there is an abandonment and obstruction of these basic rights? According to Biography.com, the Civil Rights Movement led the 54-mile Selma to Montgomery march in order to achieve African American suffrage. In Alabama, however, a group of white people confronted the protest, leading to a violent outcome in which the life of one individual was lost and countless others were injured. In his encouraging address We Shall Overcome, Lyndon Baines Johnson pleads the Congress to pass the civil rights bill in order to provide each and every American citizen with the same opportunity; in this specific case, African American citizens with the right to vote. In his 1965 speech, Lyndon Baines Johnson crafts a compelling argument by appealing to the audience’s pathos and ethos through the use of diction, highlighting the message communicated through the addition and elimination of conjunctions, and emphasizing the relevance of the circumstance through anaphoras.
One thing in life I have learned is you have to let go. If you’re incapable of letting go you will never be a happy person. It’s a fact. There will be things in life you regret, there will be people you're mad at or hate, there will be things said to you that you’ll never be able to let slip from memory. Letting go is the only way you’ll ever find peace, because until you do you’ll never be able to be truly happy. Holding on to these feelings only makes you angrier, sadder, and more upset.
Often times when we try to succeed we end up giving up, however, this is not the case for many. Like Malcolm X and myself, we both tried proving others wrong out of frustration to show that we can succeed. In order to do this, we need to practice what we need to do to better improve ourselves. Some can have the disbelieve of others thinking that they are not good enough or not willing to achieve something which can lead us to possible failure. Whether we succeed or fail we should never give up on proving those who ever doubted us wrong.
Actively choosing what to think is maybe one of the most important and yet challenging and exhausting things we must do. David Foster Wallace talks about just that in his commencement speech at Kenyon University in 2005. Reading this confronted me about how easy it is for me to get comfortable in my default setting, of letting myself think about the world in a self-centric way. It’s the person sitting beside me in class smacking their gum, who is clearly doing it just to annoy me, smacking louder each time. It’s the preconceived plan of the group of high school students walking slowly in a group through the mall to irritate me when all I want to do is buy my rain boots and leave. I can so easily wrap myself up in thinking that everyone is out to hurt me. I repetitively fall into the trap of thinking that whenever plans fall through with friends; It is not because the person was really too tired or an assignment came up or something logical like that. No, it always has to do with me. It is because that person does not want to hang out with me or I offend them by something I’ve done. They want to hurt me, they want to hang out with other people. It hurts, every time, but it’s me who causes myself that pain. I am the one who made it up. I forget that though, probably 9 times out of 10 that person just needed alone time or to get a few more hours of sleep. They are not seeking out ways to hurt me. I make these small, insignificant decisions and changes into the end of the
Whenever people ask, “If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?” I always replied with “adventurous.” I was always down for anything; skydiving, scuba diving, or just sightseeing in general, never have I ever regretted any of my decisions, little did I know that in the next ten hours, all of that would change.
What if you knew how much time you had left what would you do how would you act? To live longer they’d do anything. The poor grabbing at each other's throats, threatening, yelling, stealing each others time, we’d take another’s life to save our own. While the riches are drinking and governors are watching.
“Laugh often, Dream big, and reach for the stars!” by Don Williams. Many people don't like to step out of their comfort zone. Instead they like to stay in their shell and hid. In my life I like to adventure and step out on something fun, new and interesting. One thing that I have tried lately is repelling, it is where you use a rope to pull you down something. In my class we used a rope and our bleachers, it was great but most people were nervous. Before we were able to do this we went through the basics and we repelled on a smaller and easier wall. Basics are important so that we can know what needs to be achieved in the grand scheme of things. I was able to learn that repelling helps you understand the importance of safety and the thrill of falling and holding your life on one rope.
This is precisely how I felt after completing the second of three 16.67 miles loops during a 50-mile ultra-marathon in Tulsa this past 4th of July.
