This past year, I have been apart of Naperville Central’s brand new Special Spaces club. When my friend approached me and asked me to join, I agreed even though I had no clue what I was involving myself in. In retrospective, I can honestly say that becoming a part of Special Spaces has been one of the most meaningful, fun, and fulfilling experiences I have had in high school.

We were not the club that got talked about openly, we were not the club that teachers voiced their love of; in fact, we were the club that students were afraid to tell their parents they were a part of. This club was one of my first ways of integrating back into a leadership since middle school. Pond patrol is a club where upperclassmen show upcoming freshman around campus, and give them advice on what to expect in high school. Being apart of pond patrol helped me with public speaking, and has better abled me to open up to others and help them open up to me. As well as pond patrol I had the honor of becoming a safe school ambassador for my campus where I took classes on how to stomp out bullying and create a safe environment on campus. Having found a love for pond patrol and the safe school ambassadors program I continued throughout both junior and senior year. I am also a part of a club on campus called Interact. Interact is a club that partners with rotary where students can come together and find ways to strengthen the community. I joined this organization my junior year where we participated in a number of community service projects such as the Teddy Bear Tea, and as of this year the Shoe Drive. Senior year I became the secretary of this club, and much like youth group I have been trusted with many duties such as keeping track of information on meetings and helping outline and organize activities such as the Shoe Drive. As I spoke about in an earlier speech about thrifting, I included many locations and ways to thrift, also the benefits to the shopper and the donator. For example, the pair of jeans that I am wearing today was purchased from this store just a few months ago. I paid only $8.00 for this pair of Lucky Jeans and according to buckle.com, a retailer for lucky jeans the retail price is $99.00 that is a savings to me of $91.00.I am not the type to worry about name brands, but quality usually does cost more. If I can get a quality pair of jeans at a fraction on the price, I am glad to shop at the thrift store.
