Back in elementary school, lunch was one of my most anticipated parts of the day, and it wasn’t because I could finally socialize with my friends in peace. No, it was all because of the food that they served. Cheese sticks with marinara dipping sauce, popcorn chicken bowls, mac n’ cheese, corndogs, fruit-less jello, and even more. That all changed when Michelle Obama introduced her National School Lunch program. Ever since then, it’s just never been the same. I’ve always been a fan of the Obama family, but that was probably one of the worst things to ever happen since I’ve been in school. You would think that making school lunch a healthier option for students across the nation would be a good thing, but it was the complete opposite.…show more content…
The meals have been harder, undercooked, and the overall quality of the food has been at an all time low. I remember when Spaghetti and Meatballs used to taste like Spaghetti and Meatballs. Now we’re served a dry and chewy pasta with some chopped up tomato pieces on top. You’re lucky if they served meatballs with it because then it became somewhat edible. It seems every year we’ve been receiving less and less food. Now they give you small meals like three buffalo chicken tenders or four small chicken bites. You’re lucky if they have two sides, or if any of them seem appealing. They used to serve a bag of chips with every meal, but even that’s gone. Most days the only way you can satiate your hunger is by scavenging off other people’s plates . It really is that way these days. The food should be more delicious than nutritious, or it should at least be in some sort of middle ground. This National School Lunch Program also apparently required kids to have fruits and vegetables with their main meal, giving them needed nutrients. This seems strange today, as maybe once in a blue moon something resembling a fruit or a vegetable might get served. One of the main reasons for this program’s introduction was to combat child obesity. That’s great and all, but how is making the food unappealing going to help with this problem? By making kids eat less? All that would do is have them turn to outside sources with more fatty foods, not fixing the problem at
