Persuasive Speech On School Uniforms

Many people would say serving in the United States Armed Forces is a very commendable thing to do. But a part of being a solider is wearing a uniform. How many times have you looked at a soldier and said, “Why do they have to wear those uniforms” or “Why aren’t they allowed to show their individuality through their clothes”? Robert Baden-Powell once said, “The uniform makes for brotherhood, since when universally adopted it covers up all differences of class and country.” So why can’t we look at school uniforms in a way that brings students together? Although the average student’s uniform may not be the ideal fashion statement, it eliminates many unnecessary distractions or risk that could arise at school. I understand that some students and parents will think the school board is imposing on their First Amendment right to freedom of speech if uniforms are required. Many students feel they show a great deal of self-expression through the way they dress and restricting them to uniforms takes away their ability to be themselves. Some parents think the uniform dress code is a quick fix for academic failure and school violence. Certain parents feel other steps should be taken to combat these issues and implementing uniforms aren’t a necessary step. A lawyer stated, “Public schools are supposed to be teaching democracy. Uniforms are antithetical to teaching people how to make choices.” Taking into consideration the opposition’s position on uniforms, are they as bad as they say?
