E-cigarettes might be helping our older generations escape the addiction of smoking, but it is also forming one as well. Lately, a trend has been developing of teenagers in High School vaping. The addiction has taken hold in most of America, and one interviewee claims that they will vape on the bus or in the library. The smoke still has addictive nicotine, but they have reduced the amount of risk from disease such as cancer. Even though they are illegal to buy at that age, they can be easily obtained. Smoking these can increase the chance of changing to the original, cancer-causing ones later in life. Around 11% of High School Seniors vaped in 2017, and ¼ of them did it over 20 times EVERY MONTH. E-cigarettes were first sold in 2006, and their effects are still not 100% clear, and won’t be for decades. If they turn out to be dangerous as well, just image what might happen to our generation. The devices are small, and easily hidden. This, mixed with the fact that some come flavored may be the reasons it is so popular. The FDA has delayed an approval process of these items until 2022, which means that this addiction will most likely continue in the years to come.

Smoking tobacco is probably one of the worst habits humankind has developed. Originating as a tradition of the Native Americans, practiced mostly on special occasions, smoking has gradually become a kind of mass addiction. Due to the efforts of tobacco companies seeking to increase their sales, people started smoking more and more often; the evolution of a more traditional pipe to a cigarette took some time, but eventually tobacco became more affordable and easier to use (you now simply need to light it up, instead of having to always carry a tobacco pouch, stuff a pipe, puff it, and so on). As a result, deaths and health issues connected to tobacco consumption became a worldwide

Quit smoking without using patches or nicotine gum? Once the impossible dream, today's quitters are using a high-tech replacement for the tobacco-stuffed paper tubes now banned in work places and shared spaces. Nicotine bearing gums and patches help many end a dangerous and increasingly expensive habit. Many quitters find success using traditional smoking cessation products, but those products only replace nicotine. Unfortunately, they completely fail to replace an important element of the smoking experience; they do not feel the same. Quitting smokers miss that sensation of smoke hitting the back of the throat. They miss the deep inhale; they miss blowing smoke through pursed lips. Enter the electronic cigarette, a nearly complete substitute for the smokers' ritual.

It is estimated that 36.5 million adults smoke in the United States of America (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). A cigarette contains 7,000 chemicals and 70 of those can cause cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). When someone decides to smoke a cigarette, they are not only choosing to allow those toxins into their body but are imposing all those same toxins on anyone around them. Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers and is considered more dangerous then smoking the cigarette (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). Every year 480,000 people in the United States of America die because of cigarette smoking, which is the leading cause of preventable disease and death. Smoking should be made illegal because it is not only harmful to the smokers but also causes harm to fetuses in utero, developing children and any other adults who may breathe that smoke in.
